From Yen Press:
For Tohko Amano, a third-year high-school student and self-styled “book girl,” being the head of the literary club is more than just an extracurricular activity. It’s her bread and butter…literally! Tohko is actually a literature-gobbling demon, who can be found at all hours of the day munching on torn-out pages from all kinds of books. But for Tohko, the real delicacies are hand-written stories. To satisfy her gourmet tastes, she’s employed (rather, browbeaten) one Konoha Inoue, who scribbles away each day after school to satisfy Tohko’s appetite. But when anothe... More...

Great concept killed by lousy plotting

Yo, this is a review of the novel series in general, not just the first one. I read the first 3 novels before giving up on them.
First of all, I really like the concept behind this series, and I also like the main characters quite a bit -- I like the dynamic in their relationship too. Unfortunately, the novels are pretty much ruined by really awful plotting.
What do I mean? Well, each novel focuses on solving a different central mystery -- they're essentially mystery novels in a school setting (this isn't properly explained by the description, but that's what they are.) The problem is these are some truly awful mysteries. Things happen that never get explained, there are huge random coincidences, new characters show up and act in bizarre ways and then disappear, and they all have spectacularly dumb solutions.
Also the relationships between the characters outside of the mystery progress really slowly -- the focus is clearly on the mysteries, with only a little bit of progress between the characters in each novel. And, like I said, the mysteries are just bad -- really, really bad.
If you like the idea of this novel I would recommend reading Gosick instead -- it's another series of Japanese light novels that have similar main characters (personality wise, I mean) who also solve mysteries. Some of the mysteries in Gosick are also pretty bad, actually, but there's way more development between the main characters, and there's also plenty of action, adventure, and other things besides the mysteries which overall make them much better reads.

I read the manga, and I loved the story (well - so far).
Concerning the previous comment: it all makes sense. It's one of the storys that leaves you in confusion and speculation until the end (or the end of the volume...), well it is a mystery ;-)
And, so far: No Genderbelnder or the like (but "normal" romance).
The ISBN of the first volume is ISBN 978-0-316-07690-6 . The second one will be out on January 25. (2011).
about his pen name and eating books:
Great book great story.

about his pen name and eating books:
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Well he is male. And he wrote the book. And for marketing reasons they forced the feamale pen name on him.
And she (book girl) eats books/storys, well paper is in fact quite tastefull (the best ist the texture it has in your mouth... and, different kinds of ink taste differently. The story is really realistic.)
So far ther no supernatural aspect has appeared. ("Deamon" should refer to maniac.)
(and yes she eats paper. So did I.)

Before I go find this, does she LITERALLY eat what he writes? and was his PEN NAME that of a female romance writer, or did he have a sex change?
...It says something about how much manga I've read that I actually think I should ask this...
