Was expecting something good considering the rating, but out of the roughly 500 manga I’ve read by now, this was by far the biggest disappointment in terms of expectation vs reality.
There are a few decent scenes, but 95% of it is just a bunch of edgelords trying to look cool while sitting around talking and speculating about whether this person or that person might or might not do this or that. On the rare occasion something actually does happen, it wraps up in just a couple of chapters, and then it’s back to endless monologues and whatnot for a dozen-or-so chapters until the next point of progression. Rinse and repeat.
I can't remember the last time I got so bored from a manga.

The anime is inferior to the manga, it doesn't emphasize the good points and blur out the intelligence of the characters

I have mix feeling about this manga. When it came out for the first time, I love it. Why? Because I know it will become some crazy psychological story on it and I love psychological stuff. I love Raito's and Ryukk's interaction and L. OMG! L is the best. He's so sharp, but Raito is no stupid either and they battling each other with brains instead of sword fight or gun fight.
Everything seems good, then what I feared is coming: Misa. Dear Lord. she's so noisy!!!!! Why every serious and good series always get ruined by STUPID NOISY USELESS brat?? How can she be SOOO idiotic?? It's clear that Raito didn't like her and only use her, yet she served him delightfully. How can a woman be so stupid?? It makes me SO angry! It feels like Misa was there just to be a fanservice, see how she dressed??
Misa is not only one who is stupid, that woman whom I forget her name is because she's the stupidest and be there just only for the manga ran longer. Well, but at least that woman didn't wear such a fanservice clothes.
L is beloved by many many people including me.
The (early) story is the charm point of this series. The story feels like it interact with us. The art is another charm that makes people love it. The character development was good, only for the main characters, like THE MAIN characters. The story goes from great to a great downhill and disappointment. Especially with the ending
I eventually drop the manga for some reasons, but I can't help to say this: this manga is TOO long. For a battle between minds, it is too long. We know what direction the mangaka wants to give us, but crumbling several times after the mangaka wanted to make it longer (maybe for the sake of money, Death Note was such a hype back then.) Again, great manga ruined by the creator itself just because the creator didn't have a firm direction.

The woman died anyway since she's an unimportant character

but when he died, I feel OK. Sad and hatred, but OK. By I mean is: it's for a better story. And what do I get? A mess up story without any direction and new characters introduction with something similar to L. I really don't mind L died, even though L and Raito's rivalry is what makes Death Note great. But to introduce new characters like L's duplicate, it's insulting, man... Let's be honest, L is what makes Death Note good. Maybe Raito and Ryukk were the one we root before, but after we know that Raito became cray cray, we started to question ourselves, which side we should choose? Many chose L's side (beside because how adorable he was) as we believe he's the GOOD side.

Raito died after so many battles. That's great. I don't hate him or dislike him, this is what makes him so great as a character, he has the most character development in this manga. From nice and naive young man to a crazy soul with the ambition of more power. He's a great character, but I keep wondering, who is the MC right now? This man absolutely a villain now. So we are following a crazy villain now? Ok then!

Gave it a 1 because it's got too many 10's. Seriously, this might be worth a 5, 6 or even 7, for some people it could be worth a 8... but 9 or 10? It's just a bunch of fans that are too blinded to actually evaluate this thing for what it is. For me, it's a 5, perhaps a 6. It's around average to slightly above average. It's not great(7), it's not amazing(8), it's not not unbelievably amazing(9) and it sure as hell isn't a flawless 10, for more reasons than I can remember.
It was somewhat interesting at first, but it quickly got boring, started to get into repetitive storytelling and got plagued with bad decisions regarding the plot, one such example would be killing off L and then starting over again with replacement characters, but there's many other things too, such as the book being possible to pass around. Then there's the character cast, none of which is particularly interesting or likable. Just take that light guy for example, he's hardly anything but a douche with mental issues and a general hate for the world, swinging his big d*ck(book) around and saying that he has a responsibility to cull everyone he doesn't find pleasing to the eye with petty excuses such as making the world a better place. Well, that sounds all well and good if we exclude the part about him trying to make the ideal world FOR HIMSELF, meaning that anyone who doesn't agree with his views would be fcked, kinda like when you have an argument with someone over the internet and yell at each other a bit for differing opinions, both gets aggravated and annoyed, but this guy would kill you because you didn't agree with him. He's pretty much a child throwing a tantrum about life and how horrible the world is to him, only that this guy has a cheat that can kill everyone he looks at and writes down. Boring, really.
Well, there's a lot more that I can mention, but I don't care to spend more time on this. In my opinion you shouldn't read this manga if you've read a lot of novels+manga and watched a lot of anime before. Stuff like this tends to be great when you're newer to it all, just like generic crap such as bleach, dragon ball, one piece, naruto etc, you get my drift. When you're deep into this and has read thousands of manga+novels and watched a few hundred different anime, or at least a hundred or so, it's probably not going to be a good experience. This is not a great work, but I guess it could be a fairly good introduction to the somewhat darker side of manga/anime/novels. It tends to be nice to start out simple. Just keep in mind that few to none characters in this manga is likable and one of the least likable characters is the one introduced at the start as a mc, that light guy who got the death note. I do, however, applaud the creators for the "Just as planned" face that we tend to see here and there in other manga. The L sitting posture is also pretty nice.

I read it all when I was in middle school and back then I thought it was the greatest manga of all time. I rewatched the anime a few weeks ago and then went back to the manga and man... I've grown up and changed so much. The pacing is still suspenseful. The premise is still awesome. I will still think L is one of the coolest manga and anime characters. And I still love the art. But it's not as smart as I remember which of course was the main appeal. The thing is other than Light and L and later Mello and Near all the other characters were just there. Now, in 8th grade I thought that was part of the appeal, it was like L and Light playing chess with the people around them. But since then I've read plenty of stories where all the background characters have their own dreams and aspirations and Death Note just simply doesn't make sense in comparison.
I actually loved the ending though. Maybe not everything leading up to it, although I don't mind the end of the the first half as much as everyone else seems to mind it. I still think Mello and Near are cute although the reinforcements on Light's side seemed a bit more hackish. But I thought the last chapter was one of the best. The artwork was great too

How was Raye Penbar's wife smart enough to pretty much crack the case but so careless in giving Light her info like that? It doesn't make any sense. And that's pretty much how so much of the series went especially with the female characters. They start off completely brilliant on their own. We think, oh, maybe they'll spice up this plot. But the second they meet Light they get completely brainwashed and their entire personalities change in ways thats inconsistent. They become total plot tools and it ruins the story. Lights dad was even worse than Misa imo. His choices kind of made sense but at a certain point he was making things too easy for Light.
