Description
The story is of Kitano Seiichirou, a very kind and pure-hearted young man, with a horrifying, monstrous face. People being what they are, they think he's a terrifying delinquent, and there are plenty of chance misunderstandings (coupled with Kitano's convenient inability to understand what's happening around him) that propel him into the position of "school guardian", a.k.a. head thug on campus.

Great moments, but gets repetitive
by Mizura

Rating: 7.5  / 10.0
This series has hilarious moments with awesome art (for Kitano's face especially), and the concept was extremely interesting.

It gets really repetitive later on though. I soon got rather tired of the same pattern of people misunderstanding Kitano and trying to beat him up for no reason. There is not much satisfaction to be had when the perpetrators finally realize that they have the IQ of a gnat and give up. Though the series does have its highlights, often I also found myself waddling through rather generic dialogue to get to them.

Still, it was an interesting concept. If you enjoy this sort of gag comedy, definitely give it a go.

Really worth it

Man I liked this manga, I really did.
I'll also pay you little honesty and tell you I didn't like it at the beginning, it actually took me long to finish the first chapter, after that, it was 11hours to finish it all up.
Considering there are several mangas in the same fields as this one, it actually had a unique sense to it, just as it's art, I had a unique smirk all the while, an instinct squeeze of heart at times, an unusual flutter and beat at other times, and above all, I laughed it a lot, unprecedented laughs.
It's a rare sight for a manga to stand up being unique in a world of a must be unique to survive business but this one really did, I can't deny the pattern felt repeated and too much at times then again that was obviously intended to add up little surprise fact to plot, my only regret is how the manga seems short right after finishing it, I tell you, 84 chapters are too short you won't believe it ended.
All respect to author, your work of art are jewels in land of stones.

My Ten-Cents

Bah. I've never really been good at writing reviews about things, maybe I just give up too easily, but I liked this enough to want anyone out there who might even be slightly more inclined to read this because of what I said to be that bit more inclined, because I don't think they will regret it. Of course, if you are in the mood for a more action-packed, fast-paced story, this is not for you. It has it's fair share of what fits the "action" genre, but it isn't a story focused on the fighting.

I've found that plot summaries rarely ever portray the actual manga fairly, so seriously give this manga a try. The outrageous situations are funny, and the characters are endearing.

Again, if you want a fast-paced story full of martial artists beating each other up, or heroes hunting dragons etc. you should probably move on, the action genre tag has tricked you.

As other commenters have mentioned, the art might put you off. I remember when I first tried Claymore (same artist), I stopped after a while because I couldn't handle the art quality. But after reading this, I think I'm going to go back and give that a try.

As I glance back at the other comments and at the cover art mentioned in one of them, I want to stress again that the first impression of the art isn't everything.

Hm. I think what the guy who says that this manga is "Not that Great" mentions something that is reasonable. You could say that the same thing just kept on repeating, but honestly, I didn't want to the manga to end. I don't think that the artist was wrong to end it where he did, and if the manga did continue I don't know how the artist would have pulled it off without it actually becoming boring, but even thinking this, if it had continued I would have been more than happy to continue reading, though I might have found myself severely disappointed.

Anyway, enough of that. For anyone who typically just scans the numbers and skims the reviews (like me), I leave this message for you~ I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MANGA.

foot note: again, not action packed smile haha ~

Worth a try

To be honest I didn't really like it at first. Due to its high rating I slogged through the early chapters thinking how stupid these gags and characters were but somehow along the way, I got into its rhythm. I started to really like the characters (especially after the girls get introduced) and literally started laughing out loud at the absurd situations Kitano gets into. This manga is not going to be something that I'd remember dearly in a couple of years time but it was enjoyable read and I'd recommend giving it a good go.

Don't judge based on Appearances

This manga essentially teaches that it is important to look past mere physical appearances and judge the person based on who he/she is within. And I love it.

Ironically, I myself fell under the blunder of judging a book by its cover, and I didn't read this until 2 years later!!! It is so funny---Like laugh loud funny ha ha ha. Ever since I first read it, I've reread it twice, and I still laugh at all the gags and stuff.

It's fun stuff.

NOT THAT GREAT

I would have liked it better had I been 11 years old
I honestly didn't find the story very interesting, but after looking at the reviews and a general rating of 9 or 10, I Thought I'd give it a shot. But it wuz very monotonous and got boring pretty fast.
Its not all bad though...

PRO:
U get used to the art unless ur picky, so it wasn't an issue 4 me
Also, Its wuz pretty funny in d beginning... everyone thinks he's super scary but really is a nice guy and the poor thing keeps getting caught up in random fights but wins!

CONS:
BUT THEN, The same thing keeps happening over and over again!
Tough Guy Comes--clueless protagonist randomly wins the fight without knowing that it wuz a fight--everyone thinks how scary he is and his reputation keeps increasing

THIS is literally what happens from ch-1 till ch-50...which is where I stopped reading...
[and let me tell u, I HATE leaving a MANGA halfway!]
I then skipped to d last chapter where, guess what?! The same thing wuz happening! @(>__<)@
It should have been shorter, like around 30-50 chapters

MY ADVICE, if ur gonna read this then go through it really fast or stop when u start getting bored...
unless u can handle d monotony I mean, then please do read d entire saga

BTW, I like mangas like:
ares, saver, subaru, The Breaker, skip beat, noblesse, gamaran etc...
so according to my tastes, this manga wuz hardly average

Fantastic Manga

Easily one of the funniest and sweetest highschool manga I've read. As a fan of delinquent manga, it was especially enjoyable to read a 'reverse delinquent' manga, as it were, seeing as the entire premise is that the main character's natural appearance makes him look like the worst delinquent spawn of satan villain to exist on God's earth, while his true character is that of an angel - hence the title. It's quite similar to Waratte! Sotomura-san in this single sense, in that everything the protagonist does is misread and reinforces their delinquent image despite the intentions. Unlike Waratte! Sotomura-san, which is a 4-koma gag manga on this premise, Angel Densetsu is a full monthly-issue-chapter-size slice of life manga.

This manga has come under a little criticism for the quality of its art, and I can kinda see where they're coming from if they were only talking about the first chapter or the first volume. But the art markedly improves over the course of the manga, to the point that it is clearly recognizable as the same mangaka who created Claymore (for it is he) by the latter stages, I would argue even as early as vol. 5.

Beside that, most people can get over bad art for a good story (case in point - the people that read ONE's original webcomic of Onepunch-Man), and this is a pretty good story. The repetition of "different people see Kitano's face, overreact at his terrifying visage and do stupid things" could get old quickly for some people, but it's a joke that is spun differently with every new person so that it keeps fresh, and soon enough, an assembly of different characters each funny in their own way come together around him and comedy, friendship, characters and relationships develop as naturally as if it was always meant to be like that.

To quote/paraphrase the author - "I'd prefer if people didn't read this as a manga called Angel Densetsu that some guy drew, but as peering into the world of Hekikuu town, a sunny place with little rain, full of silly people who act out silly little events".

If that was his goal, he has succeeded beyond doubt. And drew a darn funny manga called Angel Densetsu in the process.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
As for the ending, it gave more closure than most manga manage to be honest, the obvious parallels between Kitano/Ryoko as a couple and the backstory of Kitano's parents serve as fairly blatant forshadowing for their fate at the very least. Then there's the chemistry between Ikuno and Takehisa, which has the potential to be something more than rivalry, and then Kuroda had that one moment of gallantry with "Ryoko's Friend A", Ikuko so... that could, potentially develop to a possibility of them getting closer in a non-descript manner...

In the end the main couple get together, while the others memebers' relationships are left to intrepertation, which is good enough for a comedy manga that doesn't actually focus on romance. Ties it up better than quite a few other manga I could name at least :p

Don't let the art fool you, this is one of the funniest manga I've ever read. The art style might turn you off, but once you get past that (and it doesn't take long) and delve into the story, you'll be glad you came upon this manga. The characters are likable, the story is funny, and the romance is subtle but good. I enjoyed this manga and I recommend everyone to read this.

Kieeeeee!!

The art is abysmal at the start but it suits the manga better as it makes Kitano look more freakish. I wish the art stayed the same but it got "better" later on, but so did the relationships between the characters.

All the characters where loveable apart from Kuroda (former Guardian). It had a rare violent female (Ryoko) lead that I actually liked. Normally I end up hating violent females and passive guys but this is the only Manga I can think of were both the passive male & aggressive female leads are loveable and one ends up rooting for them. A rare gem.

It's a fun, light read with an enjoyable lovelable characters.

Gohhhhhh!!

I am re-reading this in 2018 and forget to mention in the previous comment, its as funny as hell. No other manga has made me laugh so hard as this one.
