Description
From Viz:
High-school student Yota Moteuchi is so unpopular that his classmates have given him the nickname "Dateless." So it's no surprise when the love of his life, Moemi, is not interested in Yota but instead is in love with Yota's best friend, Takashi. Yota turns to a video rental shop for comfort, but little did he suspect that the shop was magical and that the cute girl on his rented tape would pop out of the television and try to fix his ruined love life.

Should have ended sooner

This manga would have been so much better if it was about half as long. The story peaks (and should have ended) after the bit with the glass bridge. The latter half of the story is just tedious and painful to plough through and ends up making the protagonist out to be a loathsome prick.

Because it is started in 1989, such a long time ago so he art is a bit odd. But the plot is very nice and deep. One of the best harem story I have ever read.

I had finished this about two weeks ago and just couldn't find the words to fit this manga. I really can't express how the manga flowed. It went from one event to another, keeping me interested the whole time, without a doubt a superb manga. Now if only there were more mangaka like this who implement a very interesting moral into the story. Even the extended chapters are great. So I've decided to give this a 10/10 and since I've read this I'm thinking of lowering some of my other manga rankings ^_^'. Just about a must read if the description catches your eye wink.

One of the most beautiful, touching, and saddening stories I've ever read

Having discovered Masakazu Katsura by watching DNA^2, I found my self going to read Video Girl Ai, a decision I have never regretted. Having been coming off an emotionally turbulent time, and having relationship problems, it seemed just what the doctor ordered. Oh how I wish I could end up with a "broken" video girl, or Ai. Lucky Youta. The stories mix of happiness, sadness, and romance kept me on edge until the very end, and I'm glad the manga ended how it did. From knowing the ending of DNA^2 I was expecting a bittersweet or sad ending, but that's not the case with this one. I've just read all 12 volumes in the last 48 hours and launched myself into another bout of emptiness, something which usually comes with knowing that none of what happened in this story could possibly happen in real life. Just wanting to vent, seeing as how there are not many fanclubs or such to remember this great manga. A real 10/10 if I ever read one.

Beautiful story, good art, a great read overall

This is one of the few series which have found a special place in my heart. In my opinion, it started off very shounen like, then slowly it turns into a seinen manga. It's probably my most favourite in term of love story. There are parts in the manga that moved me to tears, both happy and sad. The style is kinda old in term of art and plot; the plot is deep and required you to actually read it carefully to appreciate and enjoy. It's definitely not everybody's piece of read, especially if you're the type that is anxious for some action in the storyline. I would recommend this to anyone that is interested in an old fashion love story, or people who would like to get away from the modern days romance/harem/shounen manga. 10/10 is a bias score, but hey, it's my opinion bigrazz

it started out really nicely but it went on and on and on. i mean for the love of god, man. after the storm chapter i spent the rest of the series in a very bad mood cuz it was headed in the opposite direction that i wanted. i wanted to see the end in order to cure by pissed off mood that i read it really fast, until around chap 11 where i finally chilled out. over all tho, besides wat i just said, it was pretty good

Ai, Len and then Haruno

For the first Video Girl story, it seemed like one of those comical stories in the beginning yet, the male lead seemed too indecisive among other things that kept the story dragging.

For the next Video Girl story, definitely an alternate which alleviates the exhausting side-effects brought up by the previous video girl story. Mainly gave purpose and motivation than complication.

Lastly, for the third Video Girl story, different from the first two and concluded in a manner in which led me to wonder if it was really satisfying.

The manga started out ok, but became worse pretty soon. Mediocre art, unnecessary plot lengthening devices and lame story ultimately withered down the overall enjoyment.

Original story, Volumes 1~13 were weird. The plot started off pretty good, but then it seemed to spiral down. The events occurred randomly at times, and the narration changed from a first person's view from Youta's perspective to a mix of some random third person narrator and Youta's thoughts which made it sound really weird. Youta as a character, I felt was a pathetic failure. Everything he did he just did poorly. No wonder he needed a Video Girl. The actual things that occurred seemed random after a certain point. There was little to no explanation. I think the mangaka at one point used "oh did I forget to mention ____?" as an excuse to add a new plot device.
I much preferred the Video Girl Len story afterwards. I'd give that one 8.5/10 instead. Though it wasn't as long, it didn't have unnecessary, confusing, random details added in. The story made way more sense.

This is certainly one cool read. The ecchi parts you can do away with and still it will be good as the story itself is something worth a look. Well, not a lot of people have the same tastes in manga, and this one is one of those bit of harem stuff with little fan service and love triangles and with some very cool elements.

Give it a go, and it could certainly be worth your time.
