Oh! Great go home

This is his best long term manga for sure but i just can´t recommend it to anyone. The art itself is very good but especially later on it becomes very hard to understand what is happening on the page. The story starts very badly but recovers during the early flashback sequence but after that it goes down hill fast.
The ancient japan flashback and the later volumes become nearly incomprehensible and the ending is beyond words. It makes the original ending of Mass Effect 3 look reasonable(which i can tolerate).
What i also didn´t like was how the female characters were treated or dawn. It really shows that Oh! Great is still a hentai artist in his heart. Well what ever. I wasted my time overall so don´t make the same mistake i did.

In my opinion, one of the main problems with this manga is that the I totally hate the main characters (Souichiro, Aya). They are such a royal pain throughout 80% of the chapters they show up in that you can't just help but hate them. Rather, you get much more interested in the support characters, like Masataka Takayangi, than many of the mains.

The plot also is also dramatized many times, and the numerous flashbacks blog it down tremendously. The lack of continuity between events also makes it much worse than it could be.

I mistook the main character too, and man it drove me crazy! It was all set up to be about Takayanagi... and then it wasn't. To top it off, I never even really liked Nagi in the first place. He's a shallow, rude punk with a sad past (aren't they all), and watching the manga butter him up with his 'amazing improvements' is like... gah.

I don't know. I haven't given up on it yet. Maya is particularly fun.

This guy is the team ninja of the manga world. Insert enough sex and violence and it will sell. Fuck story and plot, sensible pacing. If u have enough blood and titties the rest of shit don't matter. I read this entire thing in one go and still didn't understand fuckin half of it.

Nonsensical

Really, the motives of almost all of the characters are undefined/paradoxical/unfounded. I gave this manga quite a few volumes as some people seemed to like it quite a bit but no. NO.

It just doesn't make sense and goes nowhere. The only good part was the flashback about Shin, around volume 7, which goes for two volumes. Probably as it inherently had to go somewhere as it was a flashback. And even that arc had some nonsensical parts.

I shouldn't have even started to read this. Nor should you.

A mess

The art's great and the concept seemed good enough at the start. The thing is, the mangaka seems to lack the ability to tell a story coherently. The storyline just jumps all over into these flashbacks and focuses on obscure characters, things aren't explained very well (though this could be translation problems) and I don't even know or care where the story is supposed to be going now.

@sssk i can't help but register to write this. Tenjou Tenge is not shounen. The starting chapters are a bit tricky i also thought that this is shounen, but i was wrong.

I first watch the anime, so i never confused the main character, but when i read the manga, i immediately identified Nagi as the main too. I think most ppl stereotyping main hero as having a straight black hair (if you play a lot of dating sims game you get the idea)

This manga full of flashbacks, i mean when it happen it can last you like 2-3 vols of flashback enough to make you dizzy and never pick this manga again. I honestly skip the whole Shin's flashback. I just wish that he die sooner so the flashback not really long.

The story is very confusing, when it is start, it is just your ordinary school fighting manga, and then there this fighting club, and there is this flashback. And then continue to Takayanagi family and Sohaku's plot. Btw... i never really get it... is Sohaku is the biological father of Souichiro? The love triangle thing is crazy, in fact it looks like a love square or prism, i don't know you name it.

The feudal era flashback is one of my fav. In fact Ichiyo Nagi is my fav char out of everyone else.

At first it looks like shounen, and then everyvody start dying. And the way they fight doesn't look shounen at all. Stay away from this manga if you don't like seinen.

the art is definately one of the best around
I used to be a great fan of Tenjou Tenge(unlike many i prefer suichiro and aya =P)
however the story could have been better, i began losing interest as the story gets bog down and eventually gave up,might pick this up back once it ends just to see how it goes but for now i rate it a 7 for awesome art

this is gonna be a lot like my air gear review(his other series). this was originally a great series with amazing art and a great story, the characters are really cool and the fighting scenes were great. i really loved reading this and Air Gear at the same time cause i started reading them both at the same time; but again like Air gear this starts taking a random turn it starts getting flooded with tons of metaphoric sequences and random detachments of the stories and by the end it was nothing but that. i really liked the characters and the art gets way better by the end but Oh great just messed up his story and loses you many times. the only plus i can say that this had over air gear is that since the stories were a little more simpler he does less metaphoric bull that didnt mess it up as much as it did for air gear but still it made it less of a story and more of a book of random sketches.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Plus he messed this one up before air gear since it ending early and he gave them both similar lame ass ending with the "main" character beating the main evil even though he shouldnt be in the level of the evil and random clips of future and current (only with lesser characters not the main) then a Last strip of them doing what they originally were doing at the beginning with none of the plot holes and mysteries solved and no future panel for the rest, they all just started doing the same shit again.

All in all this start great then ended disappointing story wise and structure wise. ill only give this a 7.5 cause it started good, the art is great and it didnt get as random and messed up as Air gear did even though it still had a lot of that. Now that both of these series ended i cant really say i can read any of this authors stuff ever again

It's hard to care about Tenjou Tenge unless you become invested in one character, otherwise there's nothing to follow. You could pretend that the story makes sense and go along with it though, the guy's trying so hard.

ETA: I adore Masataka, and I wish that he had had a bigger role to play in the beginning, but part of my enjoyment of this character is the rewarding experience in which he becomes more prominently portrayed at the end.

To his credit I think anyone can relate to a character here, and the story turns out such a mess because he lets everyone hog the spotlight to their heart's content.

And it's so beautiful. The details are there, but for once they don't obscure focus.
