Surprised feminism thriller mystery

I was cleaning up my Wish List here and decided to shelf this as it has been completed. My initial impression was that this would be some peculiar horror title (even though there's none in the tags) because of the cover and art style.

So imagine how surprised I was at this being a school life story with a touch of romance in it. A bit of family matters here, some loads of mystery there (honestly, I still kind of doubt which crimes were committed by whom), and definitely a thrilling narrative with a (at first seemingly) level-headed and strong female character. But as I get deeper into the stories and arcs, I realised I took things a little lightly. Because the feminism was strong with this one - this particular one that was produced in the 1980s, in Japan no less. I didn't think the support and open-mindedness of the male characters were there for the main lady. And how ruthless, yet still feminine she was throughout all the ordeals and horrors.

At the end, it is a tragic story. But because of how cool and anchored the main character had been throughout the 4 volumes, how she turned to the most positive outlook she could have, and the conclusions that came to the brother's mind, I thought it wasn't sad but hopeful for their lives and for that school of feminism that the author tried to deliver.

At the end, there were a few experimental short stories. The one I enjoyed the most was the story of when the author was young: her life in the countryside, how their snacks were never sweet and gave her clean teeth as an adult, how she transitioned from a kid to middle school, to high school, then to her new life in Tokyo. I thought to myself: this is refreshing! I would read some more about this because it's very real. It's not the dramatised version in shoujo or shone mangas I have read. Yet, it was reflected in her work - this one in particular - and feel similar to other works too.

This definitely leave a strong and soft impression on me. I found out that her other titles included Banana Fish and the likes. I mean, she is clearly on a league of her own. What a great artist and story-teller!

Now, I also remember reading Helter Skelter years ago. I realised: that's also feminism although in bleak fashion. I love discovering gems like these.

This is a very feminist manga. You may not notice it on the first reading but if you reread it, esp if you're a woman you'd understand the motivations of Sayoko and why every female characters in the manga like her.

Gradually Lost Interest

I stuck with the series for quite a while because of the good premise and summary. Even though I found the art to be a bit lacking, I kept reading.

Unfortunately, after reading more than half of the series, the story still didn't fully capture my attention. Instead, my mind gradually drifted away with each chapter, and eventually I was just sitting there picking at my nails. I don't really understand why, but this manga was somehow too boring for me. And that's pretty unusual.

The characters were intriguing, and I had a slew of favorite characters. I liked the characterization of the main cast a lot, and I was impressed by how perceptive a couple of them could be. The main character in question is also pretty interesting, and she has a shroud of mystery around her that is scarily different from her veneer of a genteel girl. HOWEVER, despite all these things that the author had done right, I did not feel ANY emotional attachment to any of them, except a little for the main guy. And that is it. My lack of emotional commitment made it easy for me to quit reading. Also, sadly, there was a lack of actual character DEVELOPMENT, so the characters eventually became boring to me as well.

The plot was also bearable, although it was actually rather anti-climatic during the first few chapters. Don't worry. Everything becomes VERY intense pretty quickly after the beginning, and gosh the violence and gore starts. But it just wasn't my cup of tea. I think due to the author's style of randomly jumping to events without major hints, I got confused and lost interest, and was only reading on to see character development. I did catch on to the plot, of course, but the storytelling was a bit choppy--which made reading this less enjoyable.

Overall though, this manga is interesting, so I'd recommend this to anyone with the time.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
While the art is only so-so, the plot is high-paced, intense, and gripping. The characters aren't fully developed or likeable, but they are plausible enough to keep the story going.
And although some parts of the manga involve death and rape, it's neither graphic nor too horrific. Instead, most of the storyline is centered upon the psychological damage it causes and mind-games being played upon people.
