Difficult to say....

Urgh, I can see why this was dropped by TokyoPop. I remember seeing this, but wasn't interested because of the book cover (doesn't look as exciting) even though it was advertised, not much people was interested. It was only when I saw the movie did I got interested in collecting it. Therefore, TokyoPop's wise choice should had been promoting the movie and then the books.

Before I continue, I will say writing this review was difficult for me and I retyped it entirely different several times to get it right without trying to make it sound boring (like rambling on) and spoiling the story.

You got your 3 characters, Wataru Mitani the prodigy of the story, Kaori Daimatsu the main girl of the story, and Mitsuru Ashikawa the one who will pulls Wataru into the Vision World.

Wataru finds out about the Vision World when Mitsuru shows off his power, who then tried to erase his memory. However, Wataru still remembers and Mitsuru said that he have the ability and was "chosen." Curious by those words, Wataru decided to go to the haunted building which started this whole thing. There, we learn of what is being a "traveler" is about and soon Wataru was forced to go into this other world when he learns that he could have his wish granted, in which he wanted to change the fate of his parents. Not only that, the story gets more complicated when Kaori joins up with the gang in the Vision World and it's not in a good way later on.....

I have to admit, the first chapter didn't start off very exciting. first volume is slow since it was introducing to us the characters, the Vision World, the inner darkness of Mitsuru and Wataru, etc. It is quite dark and realistic. So this is not intended for young kids. I have a feeling that this story is complicated - so complicated that it was hard to write a good summary for this in the first place. Nothing really happens until the 2nd volume, where the story shifts its entire attention to the Vision World, However, because of the slow start of introducing, it was easier to read after the 2nd volume and it starts to roll from there on.

Character development is on the top notch. Mitsuru is driven by revenge and Wataru seem to be on the same path. The difference is that Wataru just began his journey and along the way, he meet comrades who helped him along the way. Wataru did start off weak and a bit pathetic. However, readers will grow to like him as they see how he tries to become stronger physically and mentally.

This story not only deals with adventure of magic and sword, but the character's emotions as they are being pushed to the corner physically and mentally. The fight scenes can be intense as you take your time to read them.

Meh, I hope I didn't ramble on too much...I encourage you to give this series a try. You'll need to read past the 2 volumes to find if you like it or not.

Brave Story starts off like your one of the mill fantasy manga stories, but there is a lot more than meets the eye. The artwork is excuted with skill and a lot of black and white inks.
What I really enjoy about Brave Story is that, its a fantasy story that happens to real characters, there is a lot of depth and mystery that appears through out the manga. Its a great read check it out!
