Adorably fun

This was the manga that got me obsessed with the idea of decorating a wand with runes to increase magical capacities. Seriously. I started dreaming about it nearly every other night after finishing this series.

ha ha.

This manga was cute, with adorable side romances that ended with, obviously, memory loss and erasing the feelings. But gosh darn it they were cuter than the main couple's. That aside, there were some cliches, but this manga is such an inspiration to me that I feel the inclination to give it full score.

I recommend this to all kids who love fluffy magic and witches!

I actually read this manga a couple years ago but a couple days ago I decided I wanted to read a nice light-hearted manga and Sugar Sugar Rune immediately popped in my head.

My view on this manga after reading it a second time is definitely different from the first time around. I remembered it as just a silly cute story (which it still is) but I found myself feeling upset and torn inside when the main character did and jumping with joy when good things and romance happened.

It's not exactly one of those mary sue mangas where the character gets everything and nothing bad happens. There's actually some losses that I'm still questioning in my head.

Also there's quite a few loose ends which is a little disappointing, but they don't bother me that much(:

This is a very different story, which is so refreshing! It's not your typical manga where you can guess what's going to happen 1/2 the time! The art was kinda iffy for me, but I grew to like it. There are very dynamic character that change and grow throughout the story, there are new twists all throughout the book and I think it's a cute story. It's got adventure, a little romance, a little action, and some sad parts as well. It's well rounded and I really enjoyed it.

Sugar Sugar Rune took my heart! X3

What can I say, I JUST LOVE IT! X3

I didn´t like the anime (even though I didn´t watch it all, but I will some day...) the manga is AMAZING!

While reading the manga I played in iTunes: Aiko Kayou - Aishitene Motto 74 times!! such a sweet song, it matchs perfectly with the manga.

I love the art, it´s so perfectly done: the dresses, the houses, the palace, the school, the school uniforms, EVERYTHING!

I also love how they turn the: "when you fall in love, you give your heart to the loved one" and "the power of love, is the most powerful thing, and it should be respected and taken good care" into such a creative plot, I´m amazed and filled with happiness from reading it! Moments like this make me so happy of been an otaku! XD

At the end, I was so surprised! When Vanilla saw Chocolat and Pierre in the crawd. I was soooo happy! XD and the last pages when Chocolat and Pierre kissed BEST MOMENT EVER! SO SWEET I ALMOST DIED FROM HAPPINESS X3

I LOVE how the author portrays the guys here. Everyone has a distinctive and attractive personality that totally make my heart flutter >.<!
The heroine was nice and fun to watch. I like Chocolat much better but Vanilla was not bad either though she was weaker psychologically.

A mess

Dreadfully muddled from start to finish. First, it's about a fantastic contest, then about the main characters' friendship, then about love, then about...magical war!?

The problem being that transitions between any of these are handled very badly. The old is dropped or handwaved away to make way for the new, awkwardly jammed into things. A good example is the whole heart-stealing contest idea, which is central to early chapters, but fades away totally before the halfway point, never to re-surface. This may be due to the unfortunate implications of the rules of the contest, which are so horrible I expected them to be part of the plot. Instead, Anno contrives situations to avoid the conflict and then quietly pretends like it was never there at all. Disappointing, as the situation could have easily been used to drive the plot in an interesting direction.

Also has a tendency to feature secondary characters that appear to be important, only to never be used for anything. This is most apparent in the first chapter, where a character gets nearly a whole page to introduce them, only for them to have literally no significance to anything. Why were they even there?

These serious failings are puzzling given Anno’s experience as an author. Is it because this is her first series for young girls? Regardless, the series’ strengths, the good art and the heroine’s characterization (at least in the earlier chapters) end up wasted.

Criminally underrated

I get why this may not appeal to standard-shojo lovers, but if people would open their minds a bit and just read it for what it is - a funny, cute doesn't-take-itself-too-seriously manga, then I think people would enjoy it more. This is a series which doesn't really fit into a genre - which is probably why so few people know about it or read it. It's too quirky for those who like run-of-the-mill magic girl fluff-fests, but it's not 'angsty' enough for those who like Shojo Beat type stuff. In fact, if this manga has any readers at all, they're probably more likely to be josei/seinen readers because I can't see regular shojo readers putting aside their preconceptions and giving Sugar Sugar Rune a chance. Which is a shame.

Great story!!

This is a very fun story to read! Like the genre list above says, it's got comedy, fantasy, romance, and school life - whew!- that's a lot!! Chocola is not your average bishoujo. She's popular in the magical world because she's wild and fun-loving. She's easily irritated and always threatening to beat people up, but her best friend Vanilla is the exact opposite - very timid and sweet. This story is not just about friendship, but also love, as well as respect for the feelings of others, despite the fact that it initially appears to be about becoming a playgirl. I do have some complaints though....
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Where is Pierre's history?! The mangaka totally ends up leaving it out! Not only that, but also the progression of Vanilla's relationship with what's his name - Woo or Soul - I get them mixed up. All that I saw was Vanilla worried about him and wanting to save him while he's still in love with Chocola. And I was so so so disappointed that there were no extras!!! Usually there's something fun at the end that gives the story a feeling of continuity, but none here. *sigh* I need more! :(
