From Yen Press:
At the invitation of an old school friend, introverted high-school student Mikado Ryuugamine, yearning for a life less ordinary, makes his way to Tokyo. His destination: Ikebukuro, a hotbed of madmen living most unusual lives. On his first day there, Mikado encounters a cast of characters so colorful, the rich hues of his rural hometown pale in comparison! And as if the naive stalker chick, the high school senior obsessed with the rather creepy object of his affections, the hikikomori genius doctor, the hedonistic information dealer, the strongest man in all of Ikebukuro weren’t enough…Mikado also chances upon a sight that leaves him rubbing his eyes and scratching his head — the Black Biker, who is black as night from bodysuit to license plate, soundlessly weaving through the streets like a figure out of an urban legend. Who is this “Headless Rider” on the jet-black metal steed!? And why does it seem like Mikado’s already gotten himself neck-deep in the insanity that is the norm in his new home!?

It's ok

But just that...? I started to read it because it's been quite famous in my fandom and I expected something more interesting, but now I'm at the 14th chapter and somehow, it's rather disappointed...

The art: not my taste but is ok for shounen genre. The story: decent, have unique plots. Character:...ok? They are fine but I don't find any of them extremelly atractive at all. Maybe it's just me. I like Kida though.

So uhm, guess I'll watch the anime and maybe also the novel. I think they're better.

Watch the anime instead. A story is all in its execution, and this manga executes a good story poorly. The anime has its problems, but it's willing to take more time with ideas, and it's better for it.

I like it! This manga is great, really! There are so many different, unique characters. Izaya is scary but at the same time awesome. And Shizuo is just super funny. smile I like the art. At the beginning the plot seems a bit boring and slow but it gets better. The anime is superb too. Worth reading. biggrin

I'm honestly suprised there aren't many comments on here yet since this Manga is practically the 'big thing' this year among true, solid Manga/ Anime fans.

From the few of 10 chapters I have read, this manga is crazy indeed, and this perhaps makes this whole series so mind-blowing and even seductive to the audience.

I'm totally lovin' the approach of just combining a huge cast, with each of the individuals having very unique characteristics and interests. All are very interesting in their own way, unlike the typical manga which focuses only on the main protagonists.

The plot is, arguably, unique in some sense due to the characters and the different chains of events which link up together to create one whole story (which should gradually make sense). This manga does have some clichés but only very minor ones that it is almost un-noticable.

The art work, I would not say it is the greatest but it is certainly bearable and I do not have any major concerns for it (possibly due to the plot sucking me in).

EDIT: I have to add, the anime is better than the manga though. The animation is pure awesomeness.

I like how we can't really tell who uses each handle name. Even in the anime, they mix up the voices, so you can't tell. It keeps it mysterious smile
Izaya is really, really, creepy...

Too little so far

As of Chap.9/Episode 7 I have to say that this story intrigues me, but at the same time I'm beginning to lose interest. The story focuses on a large group of characters all with their own stories and yet connections or potential connections to each other. However, while the mysteries are interesting enough, the story's broad scope slows the pace and there is very little action. To top it off there is little to no foreshadowing or even red herrings to give the readers imagination any room to play with the story.

My recommendation is to wait for the story to build up a few volumes before you check this one out. Otherwise you may end up like me and no be able to enjoy the story as much as it deserves.

A tentative rating for now. Hopefully to change if the story picks up or not.

I'm in the middle of chapter 5, and I can say right now that the description does not do this manga justice--but it's difficult to come up with a description that would. If you like stories that unfold creepily before you and sometimes do a 180 turn on your expectations, you'll like this one.

The plot so far is based on how we all have a web of connections built up by chance encounters and how that web can pull our lives in unexpected directions. Too bad for the characters that their web is laced with poison or hallucinogens or some such metaphor.

I stopped in the middle of chapter 5 to look up a word. If you follow the link below, you might be spoiled a bit, but word itself is not a spoiler.

If you're wondering about Durahan like I was, a Wikipedia search for that word redirects to:

I want to rate it a 9 since I haven't read very far yet, but somehow this manga is pulling my mouse over to click the 10 radio button. Creepy.
