I think I've fallen in love with this story.
The first time the two main characters hugged, it made me tremble!
I love this kind of angst.I love the art, the story is amazing. The only down I can find is that some characters are really similar.
A totally worthy manga!

I found this title highly enjoyable. The story-telling is great, really directional, which is typical of this mangaka (she rocks!). The story goes someplace, and you care about it, you're riveted while you read. Or at least I was. I liked the way she does narrative voice a lot, as well. It's subtle, but it directs the story. And the characters are great- sometimes they are highly unlikable, sometimes they break your heart- definitely complex. Shades of gray. As far as the art goes... yes, sometimes it is a little hard to tell characters apart. And some of her male bodies are a little oddly shaped. However, overall I liked the art. Especially the way the artist provides you with highly realistic backgrounds, and reuses shots (drying laundry from below, anyone? I really liked the way she reused that)
The story is old... it really is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. After the first volume, I found myself thinking, "Wow, this is Romeo and Juliet" only, as I think someone said in a comment, the yaoi version. Or West Side Story. A lot like the yaoi version of West Side Story.
Anyway, overall highly recommended!

No.1 in beautiful and unexpected ending

Most of the time, beautiful story =/= action and action=/=beautiful story.

1999 would give that a kick in the n*t.

Very heavy in plot and character. Every conversation means a lot, including ones without word. Complex story compare to the average manga (which is why it should be 11 out of 10).

I don't understand why people don't like the artwork, I find it unique.

An Excellent Tragedy

There are is so much comedy/humour manga produced these days, it's possible to forget the sheer emotional extravagance of a good tragedy. I definitely recommend this.
The art from the 90's has dated somewhat, but not badly enough to detract from the story.

Simply beautiful. Aside from the art, the plot and story make you want to read it, even if it gets confusing at times, but maybe that's just me. I cried my eyes out while reading this. The end especially tore my heart into two, in a good way because that's how good it was, but in a sad way too because it seriously made me cry.

Not recommended for the emotionally weak-hearted, but a good read if you are a yaoi fan looking for something sad, and are able to tolerate the artwork. The mangaka's art has gotten gorgeous over the past years btw, especially now.

I liked the plot a lot. Especially the ending smile spoil, spoil smile It was extraordinary. I love unhappy endings as long as they make sense. Rose of Versailles is a perfect example of such nice unhappy endings.
Although the art is not of the best quality (I could not even distinguish the characters most of the time), since the story is so well-established, you should give it a try and read it.
I would like to read a sequel of this series. Yuchin and the little bot who admired him a lot would be an interesting couple. I hope the mangaka works on sth like that.

I bawled, like a baby.

Artwork aside, it's such a great manga. That's not to say that it's bad, it was hard to get used to, but I found it unique and appropriate in the end. There were several pages where there are no words/dialogue and I found them very lovely.

Oh the angst! Read it and weep :c

I wasn't too fond of the art and found it difficult to distinguish between characters sometimes. However, it has a great storyline and is like a yaoi version of Romeo and Juliet...very sad. =(

i didn't expect much from all the gangs and stuff, but this is truly 'plot heavy'. I recommend it to everyone who likes some angst and hardships of love. It's a little sad though, but isn't that how life's like?
