Description
From Maigo Scans:

Horiuchi Yutaka-san is a popular idol, who isn't as glamorous and happy as her fans may think. Naturally, her next steps include a radio show, but one she isn't all too keen on doing. Although she tries her best to keep up her image, things quickly turn problematic. As she soon finds out, her voice is not hers alone.

Idols, radio, poop, and dreams: it has it all.

This springboarded my adoration for the author of the series, Watarai Keiji, for being so bizarre and distinct. Although it's dumbly stupid a lot of the time, it's also a highly interesting examination of human relationships, the source of ambition, and having direction in life. One of those very rare stories about idols that ISN'T a starry-eyed, overly-optimistic, yuri-teasing thing. And it's ALSO not stupidly dark. In spite of the absurdity, it feels real. It's got a big thumb's up from me. Lauded it at length in a review.

O/A is a series which sets out to be funny and ends up having several heartwarming moments on the way. It's a strange sort of page-turner where I started out having low expectations but couldn't stop reading for reasons unknown to myself. As the series continued, however, I realized that the characters were a lot more than the cardboard cutouts I originally thought them to be. They weren't completely believable, more caricatures than anything, but they were all immensely interesting and entertaining to watch.

And, in the end, that's what really sold me on O/A: the characters.

As a comedy, it tends to fall flat every so often (and those poop jokes are starting to get funny again by the sheer virtue of being so absolutely overdone). As a look into the idol industry, it's certainly a very seinen-ized and comedized version of it. And, even as a character study, it's certainly not on par with the greats (or even the very goods).

But, somehow, it works. And, while it might not be a fantastic, eye-dropping, life-changing work, it certainly is an enjoyable one.

This series was not what I expected at all. The early chapters were a bit of a slog with some very funny moments interspersed in between, but as you get going, it just keeps getting better. The interplay between the two main characters is great.

If you're unsure about this, skip to chapter 8. The end of it is great.
