at first i thought this plot started out very weak in an almost RPG like setting where your hero is just there to get to that next level up. this cheesy video game like behavior was even more prevalent when our main character regresses into a 1-dimensional character after this pretty intensive introduction arc. i thought it was just the disparity between the manga and the video game it was based off of where the manga decided to give a backstory and where they needed to start following the rpg's beginnings. (i havent played the game so this was all speculation).
Luckily I was way wrong. This disconnect between the main character's (mc) past and present come back in full force creating this really interwoven plot that has some characters barking at the MC's character flaws that usually get unnoticed in other mangas.
i also really appreciate the brainwashing aspects of the manga where the use of dialog (like how training essentially means orders) and how the plot ravels around it to make it much more interesting. the red scare aspects added in really help the plot too.
although i consider this manga better than average, it does come with some of it's flaws and plot holes. some are like the huge rank gaps that are left barren from the plot (rank 9 to.. 50,000 seem unmentioned) and it makes me want to believe that there are many empty spots on the rank ladder. also the fact that the top 7 give any attention at all to 70,000ish ranked people seem absurd but i guess it might be a setting where strength is more defined by how fast/consistent you move up the ladder than just of rank alone. i also can't forget how there's constantly battles between rankers that end up with no one getting killed even though everyone is using lethal weapons.. but that's sadly seen in almost every action shounen so i'd hardly call it a plot hole now a days.
also, i'm only up to chapter 9 so much can change my opinion on this manga depending on how it ends in only 3 volumes. all these complexities i'm probably over-thinking on will probably get sorted out way too fast in a very dumb down fashion. but that's being very pessimistic. hopefully things will stay interesting till the end.
