Heureka is a manga set in antiquity, during the Second Punic War between the small city state of Syracuse and the Roman Empire. The comic is based around the life and times of the famous mathematician Archimedes.
Archimedes was not only a gifted mathematician but also an engineer of repute. During the conflict with the Romans, Archimedes was supposedly responsible for creating a number of war machines that devastated the Roman legions before they eventually got the upper hand. I think this is an OK read. Don't expect to get too involved in the story because it's quite short. The characters don't feel like real people and the story is rushed. I don't like the art at all. It looks stifled and expressions are not conveyed well. It looks like it was drawn in a PC. If you compare it to the art of his other work Historie where you can clearly see the lines of the pencils in the drawings you'll see what I mean. Nevertheless, it was interesting to read something about Syracuse and Archimedes after so many years.

The author inserted a Spartan into the historic fiction as the first person. The name of him was mentioned once in Marcellus's record, written by Plutarch. Although short, the development was fine. Just don't expect deep involvement otherwise one may not get satisfied.

Would be a 5 if not for the last chapter. The art is good and the background history is solid. However, this seems like a pet project and did not use the time to sow a plot and make the characters likable. I recommend reading "Historie" instead.

Oh Yay Archimedes!
Actually, this could be a spoiler, though I haven't yet picked up the story... SO! this deals with the life of Archimedes...

My math Professor told us that some stupid soldier killed him while he was calculating in the dirt using circles... kind of sad, really. The superior of that soldier had him executed when he learned of Archimedes' death.

I love this mangaka's works. Many of them give you a glimpse of history. for this one despite it was short; The plot is excellently weaved and combined, the character though mostly static, did end up being dynamic in quite an amazing way. even development was great.
Definitely a must read for those looking for something that intrigues the mind
