Description

Aizawa was bullied by Suzuki to the point of becoming truant. He picks himself back up and becomes a teacher. 20 years later, his bully's daughter is one of his students and she's being harassed in class, a secret she keeps from her father.

Good Details with Subtle Major Flaws

The art is decent, and most of the moment to moment scenes and explanations make sense. However, while the emotions and bullying, at least according to the comments from those who were bullied (as well as some of what I know from someone personally), are realistic, this specific set of events doesn't make sense.

Emotionally, the story is complex in that it has multiple different conclusions for different people. Even the main character, the teacher Aizawa—whose heart ultimately starts and ends in the right place, but is not completely innocent of wrongdoing, either—has a character arc and learns his own lessons and apologizes for his own shortcomings.

However, again, for this specific set of events, there are some subtle things that happen unrealistically, and the effects of those actions are ones that would chage this story entirely. I can list at least 2 different timelines that look quite different, had the author written those moments more realistically.

With that said, this manga works for the most part, and is something I'd say is above average for a normal manga and significantly better as a revenge story than the vast majority of them. But I can't give this more than a 6, as I believe there to be two story-breaking plot holes. Normally 2 major plot holes would have me rate it at 4 at the highest, but the plot holes are very subtle, and can be somewhat compartmentalized without too much mental effort, so I'll ease up this time to what you see.

I can understand why so many others here rate this manga higher than me.

For the record: the initial statement about behavior and genetics is wrong (the extent to which genetics takes the blame), and I think the story makes this clear in the end, so if the statement bothers you—as it did with me—just know the teacher was being intentionally provocative with that statement.

I was bulled, i am biased, but hear me out…

Just like other people that commented, I too was bullied in school, rather, in 3 schools. From 2nd grade all the way till i finished middle school (8th grade for non Americans). I had to repeat 5th grade 3 times due to moving both schools and countries. It was hell. I still remember me crying at the stairs to my basement, praying to God to kill me, questioning him why i had to suffer while the bullies never got punished. Even when i fought back to defend myself I was the one expelled. Needless to say, it was not a fun time for me. Even now at 30 years old I still remember vividly what happened.

All that to say this manga was a near perfect representation on what can truly happen to people that are bullied. The plot is mostly realistic (a few parts here and there need to be exaggerated for story telling but that isn’t bad), the teacher is a bit crazy but has his heart in the right place, the students were insane but real bullies can be a LOT worse. Overall the story is worth a ready.

To all the people that were bullied like i was, every day we live is proof they were wrong! To all the people who are being bullied today, you are not alone, its not your fault, if the teachers and schools won’t help, there are people like me who are willing to help :). To all the bullies out there, F_ _ _ you. I hope you die a slow and painful death.

This work nails every detail of the bullying, all the way from how the mindset of bystanders, victims, and perpetrators causes it to happen and continue until this day. I was entranced the entire time I was reading this story. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone who has ever experienced bullying, or has any interest in the topic.

What I appreciate the most is how the author perfectly displays how most people pretend to care about bullying, but then beat down on whichever is weaker between the victim and the perpetrator. 90% of the time it is the victim.

I have been a victim of bullying from as young an age as I can remember until my later teenage years. I have learned everything about it I could and spent well over a decade studying every part of bullying I could, from psychology to analyzing it as a part of a whole social system to trying to place it in an evolutionary context based on research. This is the only story I can remember that gets this correctly: It's not the perpetrators that are the primary cause for bullying, as there will always people that take out their emotions on others, but it's the bystanders disinterest that causes their best outlet for those emotions being taking it out on the weakest member which they feel could help them feel better about either the situation or themselves.

Aizawa-sensei did nothing wrong!

As a victim of bullying and some other types of abuse, I wish I had a reliable professor or at least a good friend back in the day. Sadly, that wasn't the case for me. In my case, even the professors were at it. So, while I don't approve of all that was shown there, I think it was still a good story.

To give you some context, I've been bullied in different periods of my life and, with time, I figured out how to make things work. I was eventually able to make it stop but, of course, it wasn't easy. I remember the worst incidents happened back in high school.

I was new at that school (which was a bad thing for some reason, apparently no one, including the professors, liked new kids there) and I guess I made a stupid comment or something on my first day? Long story short, this one guy picked on me and all went to hell since then.

The guy was the leader of the bullies pack and made sure I knew he hated me. I tried to fight back several times, but it backfired. One day he was at it during class, a teacher was watching the whole while it happened, but I was one of the new girls right? so she didn't care. The principal of the school (an old lady) came in, to supervise or something? saw the whole thing and still, did nothing, it was until I insulted the guy that they decided it was enough, and they took ME out of the class after some public humiliation from their part. Later, the principal asked what my problem was and that if I'd forgotten how girls should behave and I was like, are you for real??

So, things continued and many more incidents like that one happened. One day, I forgot a book when we moved classrooms and I went back to get it and, guess what? he was alone in the classroom and.... I'll skip the details, yes, he SAed me and even threatened me after that. When things were just too much for me, this other girl approached and asked what happened and, well, she told me he did the same to her on a different occasion so, we decided to report it to the principal (yes, that same old bitch). So, we went to her, told her the whole thing and all she said with a smirk was "are you sure about what you just said? this are some serious accusations". Of course, the punishment was mild. They suspended him for 1 or 2 days, covered up the whole situation and branded us as sluts, yep, that's how things in not super advanced countries work!

Anyways, from then on, things kind of like stopped with that guy but then, some other groups decided to pick on me and well... it really was over until I graduated. I was an honor student (idk how you call it in other countries) but yeah, even with all that I managed to keep having very good grades, I was aiming for a scholarship after all. But, again, same old bitch made it so I didn't get any of that. I don't even appear in the graduation photo of my own class, not that I wanted to be there but, you get an idea.

So back to the manga, I know it is fiction, but it took me back to those stupid days and, while I was reading it I was thinking... fuck, I wish someone would've done something to stop that whole mess. Unfortunately, real life sucks.

So, as Aizawa-sensei did in his own way, I'll tell you this from my own experience. Whenever you have the chance to fight back, DO IT. Often times in life, you are on your own. If you see someone in trouble, say or do something. Believe me, that person will be very grateful if you do! So yeah, bullying will never stop if we don't do something about it.

As a manga (artistically speaking), this title is just pretty quite average, plot is hella good but narrative, visuals and composition are average at most.
But there's a couple of production decisions I highly appreciate out of this one:

It's length is just the right fit.
It's pretty honest with it's own demographic targeting.
Almost no notable political censorship.

Damn, plot is good but narrative was a bit cliche sometimes

A thrilling psychological manga

This manga has layers, man. Definitely recommend it. It gave me Death Note vibes. While Aizawa is supposed to be the hero, I can't help but root for Shiori instead. Yes, Suzuki is trash, but Aizawa isn't right either.
