A lot better than Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi.

Why better? Because it didn't drag on and fall into mindless and endless fight-train-repeat cycle, as it's counterpart.

The main guy was weak and got bullied, he got strong, kicked bullies ass and got some friends. Happy end before it gets ridiculous. Story resolved and problems solved. Romance could have been resolved as well, but... it's not a romance manga and it never was the focus, so can't really complain about that.

In truth, it wasn't that bad. It had some better characters, the backgrounds on them are kind of weak. Other than that, don't waste your time reading this and then force yourself to suffer through the "actual" series. The entire plot kind of crumbles for a good portion of the series because you know EXACTLY what's going to happen.

Skip this and go for the "actual" series. I kind of regret reading this, but it wasn't too bad in the end.

I too started with the spin-off. It has better characters, fights, and better writing; however, this spin-off is pretty interesting to read after it's sequel. really interesting for a fan of the later series, and a decent fighting manga if your unfamialar

After reading HSD Kenichi (the spin-off), this manga pales in comparison. The characters are one-dimensional with vague personalities and stereotypical traits. The story is boring and there's no sense of development. Although, this manga does do a better job of explaining stuff, like Berserker's (Top 1) natural talents.

I would recommend that you skip this manga and just read HSD Kenichi instead. It's a huge improvement on this manga (at least the Ragnorak arc).
