The manga was published in a shonen publication and even won such an award but it is as had to define into a clear demographic as most of the authors works. The highly dynamic art looks seinen, the leads are adults and a lot of the story could have fit that demographic too but the entire narrative can get a bit convenient and over the top at times. The series is a bit too long and the final story arc is hard to buy into. The entirely obvious will they or won’t they romance should lastly been resolved way faster too but it gets clearly resolved at least which is sadly not the norm in boys manga. Enough complaining as the series can be recommended to the broadest audience possible.
The action scenes are phenomenal, the scenarios are very varied and there is a surprising amount of plot progression. The entire setting was reasonably fresh in the 90s and it still is. The dramatic aspect is also well done but resolutions come a bit too quickly. The anime film is perfectly fine and even a Jdrama exist but the series is ripe for an anime and a reprint as it aged very well all things considered.
Other good and fitting series about public servants are Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor (8,5/10) which i also reviewed and Iryuu - Team Medical Dragon (8,5/10) as Daigo also gets to work a paramedic for a time.

the beginning was amazing, and so were the next 10 volumes, they really showed the life of a fire fighter and this kid who wanted to be the best. You had arguments in your head about all sorts of things...but than...god...anyways he first part could have easily been a 10....
than the story skrews around with you. The whole story takes a 90 degree turn extremely fast, not slowly like a good story, but extremely fast.
-he loses all his past morals
-he is about to get fired, he says hes going to get fired anyways so why not just skip work: WHAT THE HELL?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!? HE WANTED TO BE A FIREFIGHTER SO BADLY! HE SPENT MONTHS SEEING THE HORROR OF THE FIRE, HE SAW THE PEOPLE THAT HE SAVED THE HAPPY TEARS, THE REWARDS OF IT, BUT THAN, ITS ONLY JUST ANOTHER JOB FOR HIM?!
He than begins to go through a goku phase- he begins to like going into fires and enjoys that he is always close to death---that was the bottom line, skrew the series, crap like that only works in DBZ, this...no...atleast goku cared about the planet, he even rescued it by blowing himself up, he did'nt just go, "well...you know, were all going to die anyways...."
Than it becomes a frikken love manga, and he marries some teacher, who according to logic, should be around 10 years older than him...
and than he becomes famous around volumes 10+
this is stupid, he should not have become famous until the end, he was supposed to always be treated like an idiot, and still save lives, being famous does not suit his character, I can only see that at the end.
WHAT A WASTE OF A COULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING STORY
RIP VOL 1-10

Superb manga, from beginning to end. It's rare for a shounen to uphold this kind of quality without ever really letting off; but Me Gumi no Daigo pulls it off effortlessly.
Gorgeous artwork too, if you don't mind a bit of old school and sketchyness.
It's a downright shame that most readers here won't ever get to read about Daigo's heroic exploits, because this is as compelling as manga gets.
If you can still find this, be it used, French, or just plain ol' Japanese; do not hesitate to give it a chance. It might be a bit corny, wholesome, and farfetched at times; but it's all portrayed with so much passion that it's hard not to get sucked up in the story.
