Hard to justify

When I first read this manga I hope for Devil Blues, still not getting any of that yet, will wait for a year or two to read it again. My hope is not very high though, as I know manga still needs to conform to rating and its audiences' likeness.

Response to critiques below

Sure, this manga may be problematic in its attitude towards women and gender roles. But that is a systemic problem with manga and Japan in general, not specific to this one manga. Moreover these critiques fail to see how well executed the humor in this manga is. Simply dismissing it as ecchi doesn't acknowledge how good the artist is at physical humor and direction. The plan to escape the school was meticulously built up and well thought out in how it would affect the characters while still being hilarious. The art is exceptional not simply because the character designs are more detailed than most manga but because the mangaka is great to drawing motion and dramatic shots.

The comparison from Prison School to abu ghraib are unfair. The male students could leave if they agree to withdraw from the school. The only reason they are staying is because they want to stay to meet girls. I agree that this situation would not be funny if flipped but that's just indicative of gender norms everywhere. The manga is only getting criticized because its gender norms are more obvious because it has more fanservice. You can appreciate a work of art despite the flawed assumptions of its creator. Instead, read this manga for what it is, a well executed school ecchi manga that has great physical humor and art. Its better than 90% of manga out there.

Endure, and you will be Rewarded

If you can manage your immediate, instinctive reactions of disgust to make it past 12 chapters, you have a good chance of finding out why some people like this manga.

It doesn't have to be for the ecchi or the BDSM. The story IS really humourous, once you get down to it, precisely because in such an absurd situation, the boys are desperately trying to remain human. And once you see that the girls too are human - if slightly abnormal - then you might actually want to read on. As a tangential sidenote, this manga very strongly reminds me of the conclusions of the "Stanford Prison Experiment" - it's very possible that the characters' outlooks, tendencies and actions are shaped by the positions in which they have been placed.

Come for the ecchi

Stay for the zaniness and art. One thing that stood out was the guys art on both boys and girl is more of western style which ecchi works like these tend to be. Facial expressions are very well done and add to the humor, which is cliched but executed well in an already hilarious premise. If you loved works like Golden Boy, this would certainly catch on to you.
I did mention it was cliched but the art and execution put it over to something that is worth reading if is of your interest.

Well the Art is not bad (but not really outstanding). But ...

The "story" is big BS, period.
Everything depends on dumb & made-up coincidences, pure violence, sadism and totally perverted understanding what is allowed in society aaaand a little bit of school romance. Some incidents in this manga are justified in such stupid way, that i thought that the mangaka tried to insult my reasoning personal.
Some thoughts on genres and categories: It's IMHO more shounen than seinen. There is no harem, maybe a reverse harem whit the male slaves and their main female warden. And the perverts are whiteout a doubt the girls, almost all of them. And this hardly a comedy, the most comedy scenes in this manga are when somebody is beaten up bloody whit a riot stick (this happens all the time). Let's do this in real life and how funny this turn out to be. In real life a riot stick (the telescopic variant) is deadly, using fists and kicks is bad but a riot stick is over-the-top.

This manga favors more "realistic" faces over some "shounen" faces when it come to facial expressions. This gives the manga the more adult touch. My problem is that the teenagers and kids, which read this manga, learn through this manga that to use violence and being sadistic is really OK. As the comments here shows some teenagers think this is even a "hilarious comedy". Yes, some singular events in this manga could be seen funny IF there were standing alone, but these events aren't singular, there are part of a setting/plot which is disgusting.

I downloaded first and read second. Which was very wrong. So i skipped though the chapters to see if my first impression after volume 1 was wrong. And my first impression wasn't wrong. This manga is a waste of time AND disgusting.

Do not read this, there are a lot of good manga out there.

Many words could be used to describe this manga: weird, silly, disgusting, unrealistic, brilliant,... The boys did a very wrong thing (though common in manga). But that's nothing compared to what the girls did. There are enough things going on here that could land the girls in real jail (unless they're excused for being minors), from blackmailing, unlawful detention, physical torture to sexual harassment... Boobs and panties do little to mask the fact that human rights is being brutally violated for the sake of comedy. The manga went far beyond the typical 'a guy saw a girl bathing and the girl beating him up'. It went into the savage territory,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
to the point that one guy was provoked into almost killing one of the girls out of anger.

This kind of mob justice and parochial mentality is a textbook example of what a civilized legal system exists to prevent. It's also one of those double standards thing. This would never have even got past volume 1 if the genders had been reversed.

If you enjoy things like that infamous youtube video of Chinese school girls stripping a boy naked and humiliating him in a toilet (I forgot the details), perhaps this manga is for you. There is some comedy, mostly owing to the over-the-top nature of this manga. Personally, I've seen far less wholesome manga, it's just hard to decide what kind of category this manga wants to belong to.

This is comedy if you´re into Sadism

After reading several of the comments and looking at a few of the pages this was going to turn into a standard romance comedy highschool-series with better than average drawings, so I thought. How wrong I was. In the course of the first volume basic human rights are violated and the boys are treated like shit from all-powerful females. There is absolutely no comedy to be found in here, if you are not into this kind of torture as people are beaten and beaten again for the slightest amount of resistance. Not to mention that the male cast is horrifyingly submissive and disgusting. You feel sorry for them, but any laughter is bound to be stuck in your throat. I´ve read other mangas where sadism was shown and this is simply without style and going into violence, and not the good kind.

I am rating this a 4 as the drawings are really good, even though the males are distortet at times and the females are very much sexualized to some degree.

This series has such great art and above-average comedy. The whole part about female dominance really turns me off but the comedy and art compensate for it. I probably will look forward for future releases.
