The Korean Twilight

Right at the very beginning of the manhwa, we get a scene where the heroine's best friend starts moaning and groaning about how she wishes she could find a man just like Edward from Twilight. Since that scene is how we are first introduced to the heroine, I took it to mean that the author was letting us know she intended to write her own version of Twilight with this story. There's nothing wrong with that since she is giving credit where credit is due. So while the specifics of the plot and the characters are different than Twilight, (they have to be, otherwise the story wouldn't be "inspired by," it would be plagiarism), a lot of the broad general themes are there. The story is set in a high school, the lead female is completely ordinary (though she is pretty), she lives with a single male parent (her brother), the lead male vampire is a new transfer student in her school, there are warring vampire clans, werewolves exist in this universe (the story has briefly mentioned it, though none have shown up yet), and the ordinary female lead is somehow, inexplicably caught in the center of all this. Oh, and there's a love triangle to boot (two of the three bishounen vampires are already in love with her. Will a werewolf boy show up out of the blue and fall in love with her too?)

So if you like those kinds of things about Twilight, you'll be sure to like this. If you like vampire stories in general, you'll probably like this as well since the supernatural stuff is front and center in this story. This isn't an ordinary high school love story that just happens to have a vampire male lead. The stuff that happens outside of school is far more important than what happens inside of it.

Personally, I neither like nor dislike vampires; however, I am not a fan of Twilight, so the genre itself isn't necessarily a draw for me. In general, I have mixed feelings about this manhwa. I don't particularly care for any of the lead characters. Neither the male nor female lead have much of a personality. He broods and doesn't say much, she comes across as robot-like to her classmates. The girl says she likes the lead male because he reminds her of herself, and really, it's no wonder since they are both equally dull characters. That isn't to say I dislike them, but more like I don't feel anything in particular for them. Their good looks are about all they have going for them as characters.

The story is somewhat predictable. The lead female's mother was killed as a child, and the lead female happened to have witnessed it, though she is repressing the memories. The incident also left her with an irrational fear of blood. Knowing all that, since this is a manhwa about vampires, it's pretty obvious what killed her mother before it's even revealed. And then there's the heroine's brother who is extremely overprotective of her, especially at night. He also has "hunter" friends, though Anna, the lead female isn't sure what they hunt. Can you guess? bigrazz But aside from the predictable plot, there's also predictable romantic development. Anna passes out the first time she meets the lead male and his friends. They barely speak more than two sentences to each other, and yet the vampires are convinced that she is somehow "special." (According to them, she doesn't possess "greed," or whatever.) After this, the vampires feel compelled to run around saving her from danger. (Both human and supernatural.) They even transfer to her school in the second chapter, just so they can be around her. bigrazz

Normally, I'd have quit reading the manhwa, except the story is sort of a mystery, and I do like mysteries. The manhwa begins with both the group of three lead vampires and the vampire hunters separately investigating a slew of vampire-caused killings. Both groups want to stop the killings, though they aren't sure who is behind them (and as far as the hunters are concerned, all vampires are bad, even our main characters). I also like Anna's two female friends (they are the only two characters I really like). It seems as though they will eventually be directly involved in the storyline, which is very good since Anna alone cannot carry this manhwa. Finally, I also like the fact that the lead male, Noah is from England. Romances with foreigners are unusual in mangas & manhwas, especially interracial ones, so that's something a bit different (though Noah might possibly turn out to be part Korean?) Overall, I'm on the fence with this one. I kind of want to drop it, but I also kind of want to find out what's going on with the killings as well. I'll give it another volume to see if the story picks up and the characters become more interesting than they are now.

A must read

I absolutely love this manga. I love the concept, the art, everything about it. It keeps me guessing. It is a little slow but that's kinda what I like about it. Usually when I read a manga and they try to make you guess what's coming next its totally obvious but not in this manga. At the end of each chapter I have no idea what's going to happens next. Others probably wont like the slow plot but that is what keeps me wanting to know more. I like not knowing what's going to happen next because I get to feel frustrated not knowing what's going to happen. I get excited when a new chapter is translated. And I personally find it different from other mangas and its refreshing.

cliche plot but good art

There's no summary of this series yet so I can only go by what's in the first 2 chapters. The cover of this series caught my eye and the fact that it listed supernatural as one of the genres. Supposedly, it's about vampires, so it should be different from the standard shoujo.

The first 2 chapters mostly focus on a regular 18 year old girl in high school, who lives w/ an overprotective brother. One night she runs into a stranger who carries her impossibly to the top of the building out of danger. We later find out that the stranger is now a new transfer student to her high school.

The artwork is interesting, but there really isn't enough yet to judge the series yet. I do like that the heroine is pragmatic and not concerned about relationships and other air headed things that the typical shoujo girl day dreams about. Her brother is a bit creepy to me though. He's got a bit of sister complex, but I get the feeling there's a bit more to his overprotectiveness for her that isn't quite related to their father remarrying after their mother's death 14 years ago. I think he's around 28 years old, so it's strange for him to be still mired in the emotions of losing their mother when he was 14 years old.

It's categorized as historical as well, but the current time period is set in modern times. So I'm guessing that part of the series may detail the past since the covers characters are wearing historical garb.

It's a bit too slow to start at the moment, and I'm not that fond of the whole vampire posing as a high school student plot. But it's got an intriguing plot.

Some Twilight elements

I read this story thinking it would deviate from the Twilight aura with the advice of previous comments but if you've actually read the books (a little embarrassing...) then you would know there are a lot of similar themes and details about vampires (ex: killing them, what they're capable of ect = all virtually the same as twilight). All the characters seem cold and mysterious and the setting is uncannily familiar. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the story was inspired or based on.

Though it has similar qualities, the plot is of course not the same. It is closer to vampire knight with the involvement of hunters, significance of the past and the exclusion of werewolves. Still, it differs in it's lack of heated romance and angst. Not much has happened yet so it's hard to say how it will evolve. The biggest problem for me is that I can't really relate to any of the characters. They feel distant and flat. I'm thinking the plot will have to make up for it because as of now it's a little boring.

I still think Saver (also by Lee Eun Young) is much better in comparison..

Nothing like Twilight

Honestly, normally I wouldn't really comment, but seeing below the commenter saying this is similar to Twilight.....no it's not. It does however give off a Vampire Knight vibe.

First off, this series has gorgeous art and a complicated story. At the beginning it seemed fairly simple but then the story took a much more complicated road. It's definitely not an easy read where you don't need to think about what's happening. You need to think. Or you won't understand.

Throughout the story there are hints about the history of characters and slowly the author unveils very important moments from past - what does Anna have to do with Noah? Why did Anna end up the way she is now? What happened to her mother? Why is her brother together with the hunters? What about Sen and his master? And so on and so on....

The story seems really slow and takes the time to pick up, which is why those little hints throughout are really important. I have to say though, in this case, the author might have gone overboard with them and got overpowered by the story since sometimes it becomes overly complicated and rather confusing.

Still a worthwhile read if you are into vampires or mystery stuff though. Or just for the art.

There is a lot included in this manga - high-school life, trauma from childhood, dead parent, overprotective brother, vampires, vampire hunters, nobility, mystery, high-class parties and a lot more. So...take your pick.

Beautiful art, intriguing story but not spectacular

Story: The story is slow-paced, "drifting" would be an appropriate word to describe it. It felt like I was drifting all the way to chapter 10 (the latest), especially since the protagonist is emotionless in a sense due to a traumatic past.

Art: Top-notch. My kind of art, everything is clean and distinct and pretty. Love love Korean-style art sometimes. smile

Title: Added this bit in because I'd like to note that the setting is NOT in London. One of the characters are from London but that is it.

First of all, it's very much like Twilight in the sense that for some god damn reason, every guys come to love the main girl and somehow puts their life on the line for her. Even though, she is the most uninteresting character in the whole story... The main girl was very princess-like and always being protected, which I've seen enough of. Honestly, the main couple was VERY boring as well. There was no connection, no build up, no chemistry, and no reason to why the two liked each other so much. I really didn't care for them to end up together and actually hope one of them died to just make this more of a beautiful tragedy. The only character I like was probably Sen, who basically ran the show, and his relationship with Adrachi was more intense and interesting than the main couple's. After that, Nael was one boring leader and all the vampire hunters were useless as well. Her brother broke his strong character and never resolved anything. So basically eveything that was somewhat building up, ended with a very anti-climatic event, and was rushed. In the end I really didn't care much for anyone and felt the manga was wayy over dramatic. Could've been interesting and had potential but it flopped instead.

So far, it's good. More like vampire knights than Twilight, lots of action, lots of hunting and being hunted. Hope the romance develops for Anne and her girlfriends. I haven't read more than 11 chapters but Anne doesn't seem stupid, pathetic, boring or lame as a protagonist either, so I like it.

It's only a few chapters but i still managed to sigh through all the pages. I'm not going to read this manga anymore because it felt like I was forcing myself, and even after that I still didn't like the feeling I had for the story. It is so dragging I'd rather be reading kimi no todoke and I thought that was the most dragging manga in the world, but it plays itself better much better than this to make it bearable. It felt like the author just stuck the friend in there for the hell of making the story seemingly interesting or to turn the story into a possible "She did da ddadadada to me she was suppose to be my friend da dadad" (omg one tree hill all over again!) -__-

The story talks as if the protagonist is emotionally in-dept, when really, she just sounds like a brat with a really obnoxious I'm-too-proud-attitude or more specifically a half ass character. I would like to give this a 1/10 just to push this down to 8.00 because there are other manga that deserve a 9.2 but for the sole purpose of this review i won't because it wasn't all that bad, just really annoying.
