Description
Cesare is about the life of one of history's most enigmatic figures: Cesare Borgia, an Italian aristocrat, politician, and mercenary leader during the Renaissance. The manga takes an intimate look at Cesare's life during his matriculation at the University of Pisa, at the age of 15, in the years preceding his appointment as a cardinal of the Holy See.

Souryo Fuyumi collaborated with a Dante scholar while creating Cesare, in order to portray Renaissance Italy as accurately as possible.

Note: Nominated for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2023.

Cant wait fr the scandals :D

Even though its not her best work, but I do like this manga...though besides outspokenness and honesty, I fail to see any factor that would draw Borgia and Angelo as friends- maybe the opposite nature of their characters might..however, the scandals during this time is what I am waiting for bigrazz ...esp the femme fatale Lucrezia...

such trivial matters aside, since Souryo Fuyumi isnt exactly the author of this manga though its written like that. She is making this manga in conjunction with a professor in Europe I think- which is why there are so many historical facts...and this seems more objective than her usual mangas which are but this time its dry enough to make many shoujo fans write such unsatisfactory reviews as some of the previous ones..But even though sometimes I think the arguments are a bit far fetched or perhaps lame (thats why I didnt take up philosophy though its an interesting subject), the plot is as good as a medieval Europe royalty suspense or rather in this case a "papal royalty" maybe..the struggle behind gaining power in church isnt a very tried and tested plot esp not in manga I guess or in any other media except novels or maybe I am just new to it so I delight in any underhanded developments that take place and illuminate our 16 year old Cesare's prowess in matters of manipulation and strategy despite a sort of rawness and a bit honesty on his part ..besides
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I have a strong suspicion that Angelo is a very smart spy n if he is, I cant wait for his real face to be shown- funnily I didnt see this guy's named anywhere in history around Cesare Borgia so he just might be a creation of the author or a theory of the author to be illustrated on paper

..did u know that there is another manga based on Cesare Borgia called Cantarella? Though the term "fantasy" is extremely unsuitable for an actual historical figure imho and I hope to God not to see any shounen ai, let alone Yaoi in this one..

wow....first off i have to say, THE MAIN CHARACTER IS WEAKER THEN A NORMAL SHOUJO HEROINE, with that said...it's killing me to read this manga, so i had to drop it...

but main character aside, this manga has a pretty good premise so far from what i've read, as said under me...it's a historical rebelion type manga, not so different from a berserk or a code geass, so yeah...all in all, i was really enjoying the story

the art is mehh.....decent at best, i dont like this lady's character design, but thats just me.....

so basically, if you can tolerate horribly weak main characters.....you'll probabbly enjoy it, but honestly i'm just reading this like "wtf homie...grow some balls"...i honestly thought he was woman the whole entire time, even his facial expression are similar to a woman, "blushing at the sight of cesare"....like shit, i'm really annoyed by this guy, anyways let me end this here....

Why are there so few chapters!?

OMG!!! I was bored out of my mind and was looking for something awsome to read when I stumbled on to this gem. This story is positively breathtaking. I can not put into words just how good it is. The plot revolves around a youth named Angelo who has been admitted to a prestigious university for the sons of wealthy monarchy during the renaissance period. Angelo is handsome and bright, but being the lowly grandson of a Stone Mason, he has had little experience dealing with the elite, and their politics. Angelo's naivete to the politics of his new surroundings accompanied by his unflinching honesty, although innocent in nature, constantly makes him a mark for intimidation from those in his faction as well as members of rival groups.

However, his innocence and flare for being frank, is precisely what causes him to cross paths with the young enigmatic Cesare and his group. These two become friends and the story quickly unfolds. As you turn the pages, like Angelo, the reader is quickly swept up into Cesares world. You see Cesare the charismatic leader, Cesare, the dark and troubled youth with a painful past, Cesare who wants to conquer the world and change it for the good, However, as the story progresses, and you glimpse the darker sides of Cesare, the reader is left wondering, will Cesare always be motivated by good, or will he become like the people he loathes the most? This story has LOTS of potential with dark...dark undertones. There is no romance but there is this feeling between Cesare and Angelo admittedly. The interaction between the pair is intense at times, but let me be clear, it's not romantic in the least. You could say it's like a person who has many demons being drawn to a person who is pure and vice versa. It's like the angel of light meeting the angel of darkness and you wonder whose influence will win out in the end.

In short if you're a fan of Code Geass, or Beserk or any dark series with political intrigue amongst friends, then you will like this manga. I'm just sad as heck there are no more scantalated chapters and it hasn't been licensed. I could have at least purchased it.

Yet another masterpiece from Souryo Fuyumi, creator of Eternal Sabbath. I've only read the first three chapters so far. It's even paced but I find it very interesting especially because I like history as well. It was great to see Fuyumi's notable drawing style once again though it was kind of weird seeing a little of Akiba Ryousuke in most of the characters. I look forward to reading on Fuyumi's take of the Renaissance!

Well, I've only read the first few chapters, but damn -- this manga is sheer, beautifully researched perfection. The depth of the mangaka's understanding of the intellectual and spiritual concerns of the Renaissance is amazing, and I'm so deeply in love with this story that I'm going crazy waiting for the next chapter. But it's the good kind of crazy, the kind that lets you savor every moment of the wait. You know what I mean?

Just as a note to interested readers, Cesare himself only shows up near the end of the first chapter -- it's the character Angelo who we meet first, as well as Cesare's rival Giovanni. I think the mangaka was right to build up to the obviously pivotal appearance of Cesare in Angelo's life, because Cesare has already built quite a reputation for himself among his peers, and this reputation precedes his appearance in the manga. It influences how Angelo perceives Cesare when they finally do meet. And what a climactic meeting it is!

Frankly, university politics has always scared the living daylights out of me -- well, ANY politics will do that -- but nothing compares to the deviousness and danger of student politics in medieval Italy. Seriously. I think I was trembling at every innocent, politically idiotic move Angelo made. Gah!

The art is exquisite, the architecture and the scenery are the very soul of provincial Italy, and the mangaka totally pwns for creating this story for us. Souryo Fuyumi is now the proud owner of my heart and my (incoherent) mind.
