As of this review, Uramiya Honpo Revenge is ongoing, with 62 serialized chapters and 9 volumes released. As the fourth installment in the series, Revenge begins at volume 40. Despite part three’s abrupt ending, Revenge starts off slowly, re-introducing its cast through episodic cases that gradually become longer and more complicated. As before, the series focuses on the revenges carried out by the Grudge Shop for a wide range of clients, usually those affected by a sexual assault, murder of a loved one, a financial devastation or an unbearably humiliating experience.
Many of the cases involve the story’s main antagonist, Yoroitsuka, leader of the resentment firm, whose “Avenge” app allows clients to bid for hired killers. This plot continues from the previous installment, when Yoroitsuka was introduced as a former member of the Grudge Shop.
Aside from an early case that took up over two volumes and a couple shorter ones later on that felt little more than needless filler, each of the revenges has been exciting, surprising and better than the last. One of my favorites revolved around Shu, the narcissistic brother of Shiori, and his settling of a past grudge. Another involved some nasty restaurant employees who spat on food, stuck a used tampon in a drink, and posted pictures of their antics of Twitter. It is interesting to see how the mangaka integrates current technologies into the series.
The most exciting arc thus far is now in progress, with Yoroitsuka’s mad schemes resulting in the death of some prominent characters. Of all the manga I follow, Uramiya Honpo is now the one I look forward to most.
