This is a pretty remarkable manga. Its protagonist is delightfully unlucky, its cast is wonderfully original and likable, and the whole story is a blast.

I do think, however, that the story would have benefited from being shorter - the plot is based on Takeo becoming less unlucky as time goes on, and as a result, at some point there's a lack of conflicts and jokes based on Takeo's bad luck, the things I'd most loved in the first third of the story.

The final result is still easy to recommend. This manga is a celebration of delighting in all forms of happiness in life, both the trivial and the profound.

Episodic comedy

A cursed schoolgirl lives in a boarding house of gentle youkai. Once the first chapters have set up this situation, nothing changes much. I could skip from the middle of volume 2 to the beginning of volume 7, and still follow the story.

This mangaka's debut was Love Roma, which was a refreshing and funny gem. Takeo-chan is much more mainstream, both in its drawing style and its story. Every character feels quite shallow, so the moderate fun from the start quickly fades off.

It has a fresh take on youkai interacting with young students' emotions, but with a very light touch. The main character has a stealth adorability, a sleepy gambarimasu, a casual determination to actively live her cursèd life while minimizing the negeffect of living that life on herself and others.

And the youkai are funny. But what are those little dancing water-gourd-on-a-stick guys?!? Are they a "real-life" youkai? Enquiring fans want to KNOW!
