I like the inconclusive endings. it's more realistic that there is no tidy little ending, and stories with such realistic melancholic atmosphere like these deserve it. the art is suitable for the type of story it try to convey, dry and rough. the characters have their own personalities, and not just a stereotype. a really good manga.
I have to give this work some credit. It's got a lot of heart, and some creative ideas. The mangaka was clearly fixated on the idea of forbidden romance, and it's explored a few different ways. Unfortunately, none of the stories have complete endings, so you end up scratching your head thinking, "Wait, that's it?" You want an answer, but it's not going to come. All the stories start like how they ended, with subtle slices of life that seem to just pick up as suddenly and quietly as they began.
To break it down more clearly,
Story 1: the title story, Chapters 1-3. Don't expect an epic, dramatic finish, because it never comes. However, there are plenty of sentimental and thoughtful moments. It does give you a lot to think about, and for what it is, it's enjoyable. Story 2: Ch. 4, about a young man who goes looking for his missing uncle. In his search, he finds something surprising. This one appears to be somewhat pointless (it's not as sentimental or developed as the other stories), but it serves as a more light-hearted break from all the angst of the first one. And of the endings, this an amusing one. Story 3: Ch. 5, a story about an uncle and a nephew who are not related by blood, and surprisingly, around the same age. The fact of them being related seems to only add a subdued conflict to their relationship, as it leads to a somewhat rushed ending of the story. But the ending's not disappointing, it just feels sudden and unresolved, much like the first story. Story 4: Ch. 6, a story about a man who travels to a beach to explore the local lore surrounding a mermaid and her son... This story has great potential, but feels very under-explained. I wanted to know far more than what the story revealed, and I had questions without answers at the -once again- sudden ending. The ending is a bit open, and I normally don't mind that, but it's very disappointing to not be certain of what's true or not.
Main story: About closeted gay couple who are cousins. They are running from confronting their family and view of society (they are cousin which adds up to the social pressure---some thinks that's immoral). But otherwise it's pretty funny one way or the other. The ending is a mixed bag. Either you love it or you don't. I happen to love it. What happen to them is quite clear if you read the text, I choose to believe the good ending. PS: In respond to the"1" score rating comment below me: I can understand why the guy went to the hotel and kissed his co-worker. He is after all a closeted gay man, it's part of the sexual discovery thing...
Side Story 2 (uncle): Not blood related uncle-nephew relationship. Nice theme, just isn't as interesting as the rest of the story.
Side Story 1 (Con artist): Comical. Some humor, very much the author style of humor.
Side Story 3 (Mermaid): Has the same mystery vibe with Hyakki Yakoushou (by the same mangaka). More interesting fiction than romantic/dramatic.
it wasnt the best, the stories were kinda jumbled and uninteresting. also, what planet do you come from when you say that kissing someone else is not cheating? can someone explain that to me? And after hearing that his boyfriend kissed a girl he calmly said he was "jealous" and proceeded to sleep with him as if nothing happened. It makes no sense.
This story would have been perfect if it had an actual ending for all the stories....but somehow i got the feeling that although some things were resolved, nothing actually happened. Anyway i hope there are sequel somehow because the stories were really interesting and captivating, although the art is not the best.
