Really Enjoyable and Authentic

Sort of an unusual take on the shounen sports manga standard, a lot more focus on inter-personal relationships and general slice of life themes. The sport itself is important and explained in detailed ways at certain points, but the action itself only takes center stage a handful of times, with much more care put into the events leading up to the match rather than the match itself.

Great character building, with particularly memorable facial expressions and moments of levity. A lot of well written comedy and commentary provided by side characters. Just really pleasant and heartwarming.

Amazing Art

A bit of a slow start imo. But the Art is seriously amazing. Unfortunately, the actual scans aren't too good (too grainy, not cleaned up properly). Yes, the art, it can go from amazing to cute in a couple of panels. Please note that the MC from the one-shot is basically re-written in the serialization, which some, if not most people, do not like. Pacing needs to be improved as well.

The one-shot was better

I bet the changes came from the editor, I can't be sure of course, but I bet that's the case. They changed the main character so much from the One-shot that you might as well said they just changed the character for another one with the same name.
A bloody shame, I'm not surprised It got canned, It felt original and fresh on the OS, but the manga itself applied quite a few cliches that killed it of for me.

An Underappreciated Gem

It's kind of a miracle this story ran in Jump AT ALL, but I'm so glad it did. It is wonderful.

On the surface I guess it looks pretty typical, but where this manga shines is in its execution. The paneling, dialogue and facial expressions are nicely done and succeed at hitting all the emotional beats one normally finds in a sports manga. The characterization for the two leads is superb too. And those character designs! It was so nice to see a variety of body types, faces and hairstyles among the characters (especially the girls!) in the manga.

I didn't find the pacing bad at all, but maybe it's because I knew the length of the story beforehand (and the fact that it was cut short) and read it all in one shot. It's true that the lacrosse stuff and some of the secondary characters could have been fleshed out more... but y'know what... I didn't really mind, because the rest of the manga was so delightful. The ending hit all the right spots so I was pretty pleased with that too.

Bottom line, Cross Manage is a charming story with fantastic art, fun characters and a whole lot of heart. I wanted more after I finished the last volume, but I'm quite satisfied with what there is of it. Kaito's officially on my watch list and I hope he (she?) finds success in the future. The potential is there, that's for sure.

Cancellation incoming

Decent premise involving a less mainstream sport, lacrosse. But pacing issues and gutless main character rather spoil an otherwise acceptable series.

But as mentioned, it has rated very poorly in weekly Jump surveys in Japan so will likely be cancelled fairly soon.

Unfortunately doesn't seem to be popular in Japan

It is an interesting sports manga although the pacing is a bit weird. It's so annoying how the guy just gets punched over and over again despite him not even wanting to be there. The main girl character seems a bit naive and airheaded but I'm sure that can work with the story.

I was surprised to find myself actually able to relate to this one. The same fear that ran through Sakurai is one that I have... It was interesting to see him conquering that fear with the realization that he wasn't avoiding failure but instead wasting himself. It was a very good one-shot that was a breeze to read but still interesting all throughout. It left a pleasant aftertaste ;D
