A Solid Romantic Comedy
by Nights1stStar
November 16th, 2008, 9:09am
Rating: 7.0  / 10.0
SSS is a solid shojo-ai romantic comedy; main characters Julia and Ran struggle with cute romantic feelings for each other while bolder supporting characters urge them on while participating in their own and definitely more outspoken yuri romps. Admittingly, SSS stays strictly in the romantic comedy genre; its plot and character interactions are almost entirely limited to love, romantic gags between characters, a rising idol subplot, and two main characters who're always tripping over their attempts to confess to each other when they're not being confused by their own feelings. It's not entirely original, but SSS plays these conventions so well that they seem fresh, and the overt shojo-ai romance will attract yuri fans everywhere. So, if you love romantic comedies and love yuri, SSS will easily become one of your favorite mangas. And if pure romantic comedies aren't in your tastes, allow me to direct you to Hayate X Blade, Hayashiya's other serial yuri manga which contains action, more character development, and a larger focus on solid plot while still keeping the humor and cute shojo-ai romance that we love her for.

This is defenitely one of my favorite manga ever. The drawings are very good and characters all have their unique qualities. There are some very cute and touching situations and funny ones as well. You absolutely have to read this one!

Strawberry Shake is a very solid series. The characters are lovable, particularly Ran and Julia, the two leads. The art is quality. The plot is a lot of fun; the humor is by in large successful, as is the romance.

Overall, it's a stunning example of a romantic comedy manga. And of course it's yuri which makes it awesome.

one of the best Girl-Love themed manga out there despite being a bit short. i would wish for more but really 17 chapters tell almost all the story more of it would have made this boring so its perfect length for the story. Art is also very good. i don't actually care much about comedy (usually because authors go overboard and tend to repeat jokes which is not the case here) but this was very entertaining.all in all i'm very satistified if girl love does not put you off you can read this even for its other tags as well. its a success all around.

There is a ton of progress in the second volume, with a satisfying conclusion... and to compare Strawberry Shake unfavorably to Maria Holic...?! Maria Holic isn't even a yuri manga; it's like an anti-yuri manga that hates it's yuri. It's awful.

Worth to read

It's a very pleasant read, comedy, decent to good art, not rushed (imo), and no drama or at least the little you can found here is not that dramatic. I guess if you are looking for a good Yuri manga this miss some stuff like more plot, drama, character development and side histories of secondary characters. Still you will have a good time reading it and i'm pretty sure you will not regret it as long as you like comedy.

To be hones this manga for me is more than a 7-8 rate than a 9 but there are two reason to increase the rate:

SPOILERS NOW

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
No heartbreaks, sometimes i think that mangakas think that there is no good love histories without someone else suffering for it.

The just amount of drama, when Ran dissapears it took Julia 8 monts to find her, it's not like other mangas where they end up separated by school circustances and it takes years to see each other again, besides is was a very good way to show the reader that they are really in love and also the whole thing has some humor on it.

The end, not just when they meet again but the way Julia takes her back. After all those sentimental mangas where they take back her lovers either by a beatufil confesion in the last minute or chasing them till the end of the world, it's refreshing see how Julia just stand in front of Ran's mother and shout loud and clear she didn't give a fuck to anything and even beat the crap out of Ran's mother to ger Ran backs, seriously that was one of the best scenes in a Yuri i have readed.

Solid Comedy Shoujo-Ai
by Polarbearblue

Rating: 8.0  / 10.0
I'm a type of person who enjoys character development and plot above most things. But Strawberry Shake is a nice departure from heavy Shoujo-Ai content I like to read.

First of all, it's a comedy. And it's strictly one at that. Jokes, puns, references, and otherwise funny scene are all in there. Depending on your sense of humor and and Japaneses knowledge you may have you will get some of them, and some will fall short. But overall it is done really well. While not a new thing, it feels refreshing and clean, even when nosebleeds occur and references to Yuri behaviors are made.

The art is actually good. It's not too realist but looks very nice, and changes appropriately to fit the situation.

The characters are probably the biggest thing to be worried about. They work because of the nature of this manga. But if you are into character development then you will be disappointed. More so, there isn't any back story involved with these characters. SPOILER
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Ran is the only real back story given and that doesn't come until the very end of this manga. And history given about anyone else is said on the spot and isn't mentioned again.
But if you are looking for a light hearted story that won't emotional attach you to the characters then you'll have no problem.

Another issue is the progress. It doesn't seem like much is made. Rather, what I should say is that a huge amount is made then it just stops.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Once it's established the two like each other it seems to stop there. No building a even more emotional feeling about each other. Just one kiss and a we love each other moment (The situation surrounding the kiss;however, was enjoyable and I liked it a lot)
Even for a comedy I expected a little drama building up to a big moment. But it just kinda shows up and well there. But for the drama it did have, I like how it was handle, in a funny/cute way that isn't some emotional chain on your heart. The drama was an appropriate "Aww, that's cute." than a "Aww damn. That's heavy." This was lent help by the characters personalty, one being an airhead, another being an idiot.

Lastly, MY biggest complaint is the ending. While I didn't expect a big fuse over it (and it would have felt awkward otherwise), it did not satisfy me. It felt rush without any of comedy or any good type of drama. Not saying those weren't in there, but saying what was there was a bit dull. The ended could have been played out over 2 more chapters and expanded a little more.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Julia and Ran finally get together when in the last scene Ran receives a phone call. The next chapter immediately jumps into Julia looking for her and then finding her. No middle ground where Ran comically keeps a secret for Julia, THEN leaves. There is just the last chapter where Julia comically looks for Ran and finds her in America, having gone through her mother to do so. But even that felt tacted on.
What drama that could have been there seemingly disappears, and touching comedic moments in the end of the story feel weak.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The reasons for Ran having gone back to America were good, being a a bi-racial girl, whose mother is also in the entertainment biz, a secret her mother kept because it could ruin her (the mother) career. And Julia as a character certainly had the capacity to turn the situation in a really touching scene full of laughs with confronting her mother and again when finding Ran in America.
If anything, the last order does better than the one before it.

I give the manga an 8 because it does everything I think and comedy would, but leaves me disappointed by the ending. Also, while I didn't want heavy character development, the lack a it makes it a little disappointing. At the very least, I wanted to know a few more character's story, which I think would have lent itself to even more funny moments.

If you are looking into a short, light, and funny read this manga is good. But if you want a character development and progress look elsewhere.
