Most would call this a tragedy and it is, but I did not cry. It just wasn't that type of books with those type of characters. Rather than appeal to my heart, it appealed to my mind. At the end all I could do was smile because it was just that type of book.

I think I'm going to go back soon & re-read this grandiose piece of work from Kaori Yuki. Godchild is an addition to the original Count Cain series from the 90s, but I actually read Godchild first (about 3 or 4 years ago) and was able to follow it because the author wrote it so that new readers could follow. I still read the original series after anyway.

Even though it seems like Godchild is composed of separate stories and arcs initially, each arc actually contributes to the major plot, alongside a minor plot with smaller, although important characters. The direction of the story is deep and contains a major plot twist that transforms the direction of Cain's life (although his ultimate goal remains intact).

One notable thing I would like to mention is the evolution of Cain and Riff's relationship, and how it goes beyond what seems like master and butler.

As a slight spoiler, the ending is tragic and sad, but only in a certain perception. One could actually view it is as a relief and remedy for the characters in question. So, in my perception, the ending is positive and necessary.

This is a great series (of course it is, it's by Kaori Yuki-sensei.) I bought the first volume and loved it so much I got the next 7 the next day! It's a great series!! The ending kills me though... every time I read it I feel so emotional... the last page cuts holes into my soul!

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I never thought of this manga as shounen-ai, but Cain and Riff dying together was... perfect. I hated that they died, but it couldn't have ended any other way. And Cain... in Riff's arms like that... it was so terribly, heartbreakingly perfect...

I highly recommend it if you have not read it. It's truly amazing, as all of Yuki-sensei's works are!

One of the few mangas I liked so much I went out and bought the whole series. The art is stunning and so detailed. The characters are lovely and put you on your toes. The plot was a bit messy and it is disturbing. I'm not a big fantasy fan so I didn't really like the fantasy elements of the plot, but it was still gripping until the end.

I love this manga to pieces. The ending was extremely satisfying, which I find rare in the manga universe. I love that you get the chance to adore characters other than the protagonists, and the plot twists are splendid. I highly recommend this manga!

The story was spectacular. Honestly, one of the best manga I have ever read. It's dark, and extremely twisted and convoluted. Lots of gore, and pretty mature, but nothing that bad. This might honestly be the only story that actually had me wondering about what was going to happen next. Still, it ties up really nicely at the end. I also loved the characters. They were well-developed and interesting. Very elegant art, too. I find the style is very unique, and pretty.
Overall, just an amazing, dark, beautiful manga.

I absolutely love this series. I very seldom give any manga series a 10, but this one deserved it. I love this mangka's art. It has a gothic type beauty to it. The characters were well developed, and you got the know enough about them to really care what happened to them. Cain is a great character because he is so multi-dimensional. He's kind one minute, dark and brooding the next. His man-servant Riff is also a nice multi-dimensional character. Mary Weather is a cute and lovable character that adds depth to the story. The story is well-developed. It's dark, and includes things like incest. I had a hard time putting it down. I always liked this mangaka's work, but this is my favorite one. The ending of this one is like being smacked by a 2 x 4. It's leaves a lasting emotional response, but this is what makes a good story of this type. This ending works in such a good way because the reader has come to care about these characters and hope for the best. A good writer creates an ending that has staying power, and this one does. I highly recommend this one.

I only read the LAST chapter of that (coz I wanted to know if the ending was worth reading the whole thing) and I was in tears T^T
I absolutely loved it :")

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Well, that is, except for the fact that they kept going on about how the earl loved Mary more than riff =_= I don't think it looked like that, though, since he wanted to die with him. But nontheless, it annoyed me.
I am a yaoi fangirl after all ^-^

now ima go and read the whole series xD
maybe the prequel first? lol biggrin

Bittersweet ending...as usual from Kaori sensei. But I loved it! This was my fave series by her to date. It was beautful to follow. Lovely Art.I love the Victorean era, and the gothic feel of the series. The ending brought me to tears. And the 'romance' between Cain and Riff...light but it was there :3

A great read.
