Short review: Nisekyuu!! is a cute collaboration oneshot between Haikyuu!! and Nisekoi that will delight fans of both series, whether they’ve read one or both of the series.
Full review:
This review will only contain spoilers if you don’t know the main sets of characters of both manga.
I read Nisekoi while it was releasing and Haikyuu!! only a few weeks ago. When I was reading Haikyuu and got to this chapter it was a pleasant surprise because I had forgotten this collaboration existed. I really enjoy collab oneshots, and this is the first shounen one I’ve encountered because I don’t read as much shounen manga. I usually see these for shoujo series, so recognizing both of the shounen manga really got me hyped. I believe fans of either series would enjoy this because we get to see the characters be themselves even around outside characters, and it’s cute to watch the casts interact. On the other hand, if a person hasn’t read either Nisekoi or Haikyuu then this might come off as a weird oneshot to them.
Honestly, reading this from a “reading Haikyuu” perspective, I was wondering how a volleyball game between the two sets of characters was going to balance out because the Karasuno kids are actual volleyball players and the Nisekoi cast is a bunch of girls and well, Raku. Somehow, though, the authors managed to make it work. The sand became a real handicap for Karasuno (and I forgot that Chitoge was a monster and Marika was insane). I think having the Karasuno second years in the picture really stepped up the comedy too. Noya and Tanaka’s reactions to girls is always a laugh and they seem to have gotten along with Raku too by the end (lol). The antics of the girls were the usual fare, but it’s always nice to see the gang together. It’s kinda funny to think that Raku and Tsukki have the same voice actor, but sadly the other Karasuno first years aren’t in this one.
The last panel where Kageyama is asking for pointers from Chitoge and Hinata is so surprised to be talking to a cute girl is just too precious! I am one of those people hoping for an OVA but this was released in 2014 so that’s highly unlikely by now. I just wish more series did this sort of crossover thing!
Overall, this was lots of fun and I think it’s a cute thing to reread when you’re down. Thank you Furudate-sensei and Komi-sensei!
Warning: Spoilers for Haikyuu!! ahead
I always wonder if this match (if considered canon) is one of the main reasons Hinata decides to go to Brazil. Like in the manga, this is the first time we see them playing in sand and even Noya and Kagayama are having a hard time, so this could be the origin of ninja Shouyou!
Plot 6/10
Art 8/10
Characters 7.5/10
Overall personal enjoyment 7/10
