Description
Chakuro is the 14-year-old archivist of the Mud Whale, a nigh-utopian island that floats across the surface of an endless sea of sand. Nine in ten of the inhabitants of the Mud Whale have been blessed and cursed with the ability to use thymia, special powers that doom them to an early death.
Chakuro and his friends have stumbled across other islands, but they have never met, seen, or even heard of a human who wasn't from their own. One day, Chakuro visits an island as large as the Mud Whale and meets a girl who will change his destiny.

I Love the Anime of This

And I love its world building.
It's a unique version of the fairly common setting of people exiled in a closed-off society. It has one and only one magic power, which keeps the heroes from seeming overpowered. It has lots of cute kids and likeable young folks, plus some questionable rulers. It has very much the kind of set of moral rules you would expect of a society in which much of the population is made up of young people with the aforesaid magic power.
It's drawing is lovely, and thank God the airy shoujo style of the manga is diminished in the anime, because I generally hate that style wherever it appears because it's hard to "read" visually and detracts from the illusion of reality of the world depicted. I've encountered that problem with the manga version of this as well.
Conflict within the society, when it comes, takes a form to be expected given the people's training and circumstances, and I am now in great suspense as to whether these lovely folks will come out OK.
I hope that by the time the anime is well along I'll be familiar enough with the world depicted to get over the somewhat visually-confusing drawing in the manga.

The narrative is very setting and lore heavy for a female publication. I have more questions then opinions at this point but i liked what i read in the first volume. The protagonist needs to develop more complexity though.
The later volumes though didn´t manage to build on this promising foundation and i had to stop. It´s ultimately impossible to care about a story if the characters within can´t seem to either.
