Interesting concept turned into a tournament manga
by Katsono

Wizard's soul introduces itself like a casual slice of life would and, in a lot of ways, it felt pretty similar to Bonnouji. As someone who enjoyed it a lot, I'd feel familiar with this style and pacing. I liked the firsthand concept of trying to lead a romance in a world dominated by a trading card game.

However I wasn't so much of a fan of the very sudden switch of focus from the slice of life to romance aspect into a tournament which covers almost the entirety of the manga. Since it was not introduced as the main plot at first, it came as a surprise and as something I wasn't reading the manga for at the time. I did enjoy the tournament, but I don't feel like the manga really tried to pull the readers into it.

There are some things I believe it's lacking to be a "card battling manga". For instance, the TCG scene is not really detailed enough to be the main focus of the story and I think it is mostly a reference to Magic The Gathering, with different names for cards. The stacks are also rather poor, they're just quickly established in one chapter but the main girl's motivation honestly isn't solid enough to run a whole manga. Also, the tournament is just way too long and it's one fight after another without a break, a real change of situation (aside from some small events that don't have any impact on the outcome) or character development. Battling mangas usually try to pace this by taking a break in-between events, and notably introducing different reasons for a battle: rather than being one continuous tournament, you'd show one or two battle for each arc and then make the story progress. Since there's only one arc, it felt really heavy and draining to read. The characters were also never introduced outside of their match, and I honestly only cared for the initial cast when the card rivals started appearing as friends, after their respective matches.

It's still pretty good, the main character is cool and the fights, although tiresome to read in a row, are interesting. Bonnouji's author is solid, but I wasn't really a fan of this work.

Interesting card setting

You don't have stories about playing card games that aren't aimed at kids often so this was refreshing. This story is very much so focused on the playing-cards aspect so you have to be for that. The MC is cute and has an interesting backstory involving her mother.

Adorable MtG-style story

This isn't the first story about a trading card game, but its uncommonly anxious protagonist is refreshing. She plays 'annoying' decks and doesn't enjoy herself despite winning.
The story is self-contained. I wish it would've gone longer, but it has a suitable ending.

...the example of card game without a boom-dhuar-dhuar virtual reality things or hologram or something like that //whatthefuriousamIwriting? /he.

Basically, the card game in here is really a card game-- like in our real world-- like when we play with friends in a real face to face pvp. Using our really collected cards. Yes. And I DO meant it.

Of course I'm not hate something like this. But I won't deny the card battle looks so flat. The only thing that isn't bore me is how our MC going to use her card. Srsly.

Aside from that, the character looks plain-- as plain as their personality. Like (almost) all Eda sensei's character, they have a lovely (or at least not that annoying) personality. But I'm not sure for this one. I meant-- they're cute and kind. But maybe not my cup in this kind of plot.

Eh. Some of you who read this may not think like me. But that's how I feel so I'm just write it.

Finished at 31th October.

Disliked TCG, but I loved this manga.

Wizard's Soul is a very experimental work. It's clear that it is just by reading it but the author's comments support that claim. Therefore, it has a strange premise that you need to suspend your disbelief for, but if you do you'll find an incredibly interesting manga. Aki Eda approached card games, which I honestly don't like at all, in a way that explained to me what there was to like about them and subsequently made me interested in those games. Furthermore, the main character is quite interesting. She has good reasons for withholding shame from one person, but letting a few close others know about it, and her ruthlessness in pursuit of a practical, happy ending is quite awesome. It's a thrilling card game manga, and a funny romance -- the male love interest starts becoming attracted to the protagonist for reasons very unusual to romance. It's funny and kinda cool. I like the series a lot and consider it one of my favorites. Wrote a long review detailing precisely why. Give the series a chance, you may find it to be as enjoyable as I did, or perhaps even more.

Too unrealistic and shallow characters
by moredrowsy

If you have read Aki Eda's other works and expect the same, you'll be sorely disappointed. This series' premise is too surreal, has TOO MUCH cliche, and most of the characters act like they haven't gone to school before. The one huge problem with this series is the characters.

They are all very shallow. Both the male and female MC act like those typical shoujo characters that purposely lead to misunderstandings. For example...if the female mc explains her situation (burden to pay off family's debt) after she tricks the guy she likes into losing, he'll understand. But nope, she'll tell other about her problem except for him. What? If you're gonna tell other people about it, just tell him too so he'll understand why you tricked him...There's a ton of other issues too but that'll be spoilers.

Completely disappointed.

However, if you like stuff like Yu gi oh, then this'll be a great series for you. But, if you are expecting another josei with realistic, like characters, then don't waste your time on this.

Like how Log Horizon resonates with people who play MMORPGs, this cute little manga will resonate with people who play/ed CC Games (MTG in particular), and in the hands of AKI Eda I´m pretty sure this will become a cult manga over time.
