I'm happy that I've decided to pick this up. I stray away from reading shounen because it usually bores me but I have liked a select few from the genre, so I was really surprised that this is tagged as shounen (and written by a man!) because I would have badly missed out on this. If someone told me that Frieren was written by a man, I wouldn't believe it.

This has given me an existential crisis because of how time is always emphasized as fleeting, given that the main character is an elven. I'm always reminded that everything will pass in time and no one will remember what you do and who you are, which I find bittersweet as I read through Frieren's journey, the people she've met and the things she does for them. Despite having such a long lifespan, Frieren has no desire in leaving a legacy but rather spends her time going with the flow and making sense of the world from her peers. I love that every now and then there are flashbacks of how the other characters changed her for the better (Himmel has contributed a lot, and I get why he's 2nd in character rankings). And what I love the most about is the character relationships and interactions, so entertaining and heartfelt.

I look forward to more of Frieren getting eaten by a mimic ^^

Top tier ch1-107

It's a real pity at the time I write this it's on indefinite hiatus for now. Very good character writing, world building and overall plots.

The only reason I don't give it a 10/10 is twofold, first it has release issues with constant delays and now this unknown when it ends hiatus which is frustrating/annoying and the 2nd is it sometimes gets a little too into its own 4d chess moments and you wonder why they didn't end something in 0.2 sec.

I really appreciate how they blend the original heros journey into Frieren's new journey with her new members like 80years later as analogue or differences to each other and how it leads to more growth for Frieren. I feel like at the end she's going to realise she was actually in love with Himmel and that will be tragic but also cool to see.

I also super appreciate that while I normally despise 2d villains in this case it works as Demons can talk and all that but they are essentially just normal monsters but the Apex monster. Know our language in order to decieve and kill people like any other monster with no human emotions cause well they aren't human.

Normally I wouldn't talk about art but this series is very well drawn aswell so it has all the good elements and this maybe my favourite Fantasy manga and defo my favourite timeskip type series. I can only hope it keeps up the quality until it's end. As a last aside this series has little to no wheel spin which is a massive plus espessially these days with manga series.

Melancholy Mastery

I consider this manga masterful when it comes to the mood and atmosphere of the story, with a consistent melancholy that bears down on me as I read this—not in a bad way, though.

It's happy, its bawl-your-eyes-out sad, it's joy and it's pain. And it never fails to remind you of how short life is.

Add into that a competent and fairly detailed fantasy world design, as well as some truly bold choices within

like treating demons like demons and not just another fantasy race with good and bad people in it
and you get a world that feels lived in.

I'm looking forward to wet eyes as I re-read this in the future.

The scene set is quite half assed, borrowing many tropes.

Even though to story isn't that bad, you can't say it's fresh the story after the death of your comrades is a very common trope, even the first story ever "The Epic of Gilgamesh" has it, this start is just used as in many mangas to give a lousy "in media res start" without risking too much and giving the MC room for improvement.

But what I really dislike the "demons are bad because" how they're portrayed as psychopaths, it makes them 2D and is opposed to the MC's stoic behaviour even though she's almost inmortal and also non human.

through the gags, slow pace, and apparent emotionlessness there's a deeply moving story of meaningful relationships and honoring what's lost being built here. this is absolutely stellar work. i could nitpick at things i'd rather have seen but i don't think that any of the changes i'd suggest would make for a more impactful story, just one that fits my preferences better.

Honestly i put off reading it for so long because reading the synopsis i thought it would involve a lot of mourning and more tragedy than i prepare to deal with but it is much the opposite. It is a beautiful story of life journey and gives you perspective on how fleeting it is and at the same time showing them a life well lived and the continuous legacy it leaves. It really emphasize connection and emotional journey while a lot of typical rpg adventure actions were packed in few small panels throughout and worth it to pay close attention to them aswell.

Also if you take note of the first panel of every arc showing how many years have passed i feel like it really emphasize how fast time pass for frieren's current teammates as their journey from town to town takes months

Best Manga I Read This Year

It has a promising start, a unique story that shined amongst a pile of mediocre isekai/rpg fantasy. A slice of life story that’s done right, showcasing the bittersweet memory of pass and creating new memories in the present. However, half the story, it takes a mainstream shounen approach with exam, fighting, and more fighting… demons. Kimetsu no yaiba? For now, I’m still looking forward where the story goes.

there isn't a lot of content that I would describe as truly elegiac but this captures the mood perfectly. I view it as a truly beautiful exploration on the themes of comradery, love, legacy, and a life well lived.
