The female lead is way too idiotic. Anytime she thinks she wants to be useful, she's always causing more issues. She actively tries to help another girl get close to him despite knowing that he doesn't want it. Somehow I'm not surprised that she doesn't realize why she hasn't been fired already, she's just that stupid.

The male lead isn't faultless either, though. He's the person in power. He likes her, but doesn't actually say/do anything to get her to realize it. I have no idea what made him fall for her, but eh, whatever.

Anyways, considering that there's been no progress in their relationship whatsoever means it'll be a slow read, though the moment they introduce another rival will be when I completely drop this series.

Quick summary: Don’t expect in depth politics, intrigue, full blown strategy for this series, but if you’re looking for a fluffy romance that’s positive read with consistent character development, Ookami Heika no Hanayome is a very good, well written and well paced historical light shoujo read. There are politics, intrigues and plot involved, but it takes a backseat in the story and serve more as a setting for the relationship development of the leads.

For the politics in the historical setting of this story, a lot of people have been comparing it to Saiunkoku no Monogatari, which I think shouldn't be compared. Both are equally well written, and with good execution and pacing, but Ookami Heika no Hanayome is lighter on the details of political intrigue compared to the other oft compared/previously mentioned title. It's not saying that this manga's political plots do not make any sense.. there are plots that are obviously quite thought out and have potential to be very complicated if the author chose to delve into them, but I think it wasn't the author’s purpose to write that kind of manga. The political plots do make sense, but they're made to be used more to frame and support the environment, setting that progresses relationship of the two main characters and not really concentrating the development of the country in question. There are some whodunits but its more on the lighter side of story telling. Not to say that there are no consequences for characters actions, there are still indication of dark ramifications, but it is not expounded too much if it doesn’t forward the relationship of the two leads.

The female lead can be labeled as somewhat naive, but it doesn't necessarily mean that she is an airhead. She has strong sense of responsibility and is quite aware of her deficiencies, which do not actually stop her from moving herself forward but instead use it as a motivation to improve. This is actually a good trait that makes the female lead much less of a damsel in distress type against the ruler-of-the-land male lead, and it makes the story move forward positively. The characters are portrayed more in a light manner (often comedic but not in a slapstick manner) and its similar to the gist and feel of the political plots which confirmed for me the author's intention to make a more easy and lighter historical shoujo. The relationship may feel somewhat childish and unrealistic to the reader during the first few volumes, but I promise the author gives a plausible and believable explanation how and why they actually do work together, and why their feelings do develop once their backstories are shown later in the series. Theres still a very slight suspension of belief but it didn’t really bother me, as mentioned, this was written as a more light romance historical shoujo approach. Side characters do have their own personalities and quirks, but they are not developed extensively with their backstories in lieu of developing the story for the main leads.

One thing to note: Surprisingly, up until the latest chapter i've read (ch74) there have been no other major characters that are involved in actual/concrete love triangles for the main leads, which I think is actually very interesting writing. Most shoujos, even historical ones, have some sort of love triangle that (sort of wreck a bit of havoc and) move the development of the leads relationship forward, but this one actually doesn't and yet still pulled off a a very satisfying read.

I didn’t regret reading this, it's really a very enjoyable read. As the previous commenter mentioned, if you can pull through and read past the first few volumes (which to be honest isn't really that bad either), things start to unfold and you’ll start to understand and appreciate how well the story is written and planned 🙂

Yes, the first (30? 40?) chapters are a little repetitive and in some ways feel like a marathon, but once you get past those, the story becomes surprisingly serious and fairly complex. This seems to be a common way lots of manga work, because I've read dozens that do the same thing. Anyway, the point is, this is actually extremely sweet and really fun. The story is interesting, and the characters are diverse and make for interesting scenarios and dialogue. The wolf king in particular is much more complex than he appears. Paired with Yuurin's genuine goodness, tenacity, and strong work-ethic, this manga is fun and well-worth a read.

This is just.... how can I get into it? The plot feels like it could have so much to capture my attention -- political intrigue, assassinations, romance, mystery...... but it just comes up short. It's just so.... silly and uninteresting. I almost felt embarrassed reading it, because it felt so childish.

I know the reviewers comparing it to Sainkoku no Monogatari are somewhat unfair, because it is a different series. But this series tries very hard to accomplish the same things.. except it's infinitely worse.

Just, ugh. The characters are bland and uninteresting and the characterization is so shallow. The relationship between the main character and her love interest is just like... unbelievable. Not really founded on anything at all, and equally childish. I know I keep saying that, but I think it really hits the nail on the head. I feel like this is the kind of story I would write if I were in middle school.

It's just so boring. I can't finish it, I can't even read that much into it. I tried, hoping it would improve, but there are far better ways to spend my time.

Since the disappearance of otakumole.ch, i have been slowly coping with th fact that i wont be able to continue the manga until the current translaion (very slow) catch up to where i was... sign.. go read it! He is not a puppy... there.. that is all im going to say... marrrryyyyyy wolfffffiiieeee *cough*

It's "a lot like" Saiunkoku no Monogatari in the beginning. But, that was the first few chapters. It, actually, took a course of it's own and turned into a cute (not that SnM wasn't) story. I really enjoy read/watching the two main characters interact with each other. Yuurin (Yuulin) is a really amusing character, cracks me up watching her go from calm to annoyed in a split second.
Yes, it is true the story has its moments of repeats and you wonder where this is going in a "Seriously...?" kind of way..But, I still enjoyed it.

It's adorable, but I agree with Ibleda that it reminds me far too much of Saiunkoku Monogatari, without being anywhere close to as detailed, deep and sweet as the latter. It's a shame that the mangaka didn't take a different tack on the protagonist other than that of a poor commoner... a more specific background or even a change of former profession might have saved her.

I think it's very nice! The setting seems similar to Saiunkoku no Monogatari (at least in the beginning), but the heroes are VERY different. And sweet. Also, there are a lot of details which could be added (concerning mode of life, management of the country and so on), but with the help of your imagination and logic you can actually fill in the gaps, if you want. It's a perfect chance for fanfiction to bloom.

This series starts out slow, but later on, around chapter 20, the series becomes....I guess more realistic.....and there are mysteries involved....I strongly recommend it, because not many series make me want to read the Chinese version.

Well... this isn't bad... it's just, feels so inferior compared to Saiunkoku no Monogatari. I dunno, feels like this kinda sucks, but not exactly. I suppose it's kinda too simple.

The art isn't bad, but again as I kept comparing it as the story is just so similar, it's not that great either. Yuulin (or Yuurin) kinda looks out of place. What's with that hair!? ><... Soo doesn't suit her or the manga. And again, it feels simple, nothing fancy and nothing special.

The story pretty much repeats what I've been saying. I like the twist with Haku's personality, but the rest of the story feels like a compressed zip = =;;. ARG where's the details!? Am I reading a child's picture book, or a history timeline?

Well, in any case, despite what I say and the fact that this manga lacks details and emotions and whatsoever, I enjoyed this quite a bit. But I have to mention throughout this whole time I kept thinking "maybe I should go read Saiunkoku manga..."
