The demon queen subdued enormous and powerful monsters and slaughtered over half of the world's population. Surviving members of the human race elected a hero to slay the demon queen, beseeching release from her oppressive rule. However, he questions his mission to eradicate the monsters: in his opinion, they too are conscious and alive, and so he anguishes over that fact. Sheila the Demon Queen became interested in him and decides to join his journey, hiding her identity and planning to kill him after she has gained his trust. Immediately, however, she realizes that she's fallen in love with the hero, and hence their journey begins...

Cliche and Predictable, but therein lies the charm

This is a very typical fantasy-romance story.

But, that's not altogether a bad thing, of course.

Superior is a manga that takes all those romance cliches and plays it completely straight. Demon King (or, rather, Queen)? Check. Magnanimous hero who refuses to kill anyone except the Demon King? Check. And, now, all that's left is for them to fall in love!! Check.

Don't get me wrong. I personally really enjoyed Superior. It's a wonderful manga. The romance is really cliche at times, and the comedy falls flat more often than not... The characters are all likable and enjoyable enough, but after their initial appearances/arcs, most of them remain completely static. (Actually, I can't recall a single character developing as a character after their backstory, etc. was resolved.)

But, regardless, I like it.

Simply put, Superior is a manga with a lot of flaws, but it's not really a manga to be taken completely seriously or for the reader to be deeply invested. (The mangaka does try to make the drama compelling, and some of it is, but most of it isn't. Still, it's enjoyable enough.) As long as you are able to overlook these flaws and just take everything as they come, you'll probably enjoy Superior. It's certainly a wild ride, and I really did like it while it lasted.

Now, if you hate the romance/fantasy genre or can't stand cliches, this manga is obviously not for you. It's certainly enjoyable, but it really isn't one to change opinions. It's really more of a "guilty pleasure" than anything because, in terms of story or characters, it really falls flat. Where Superior truly shines is in its simple ability to make the audience enjoy the story, regardless of how ridiculous it is.

If you have problems reading fantasy with dumb and naive heroines, then you should look for another manga. If you don't, then you will probably like Superior.

This a 6 for me because the story is nothing more than another typical farfetched shoujo. The demon queen subscribes to the hero like a pet. Their relationship is constructed around cliches, and both their personalities lack genuineness and complexity. Sheila is also not very intelligent. Her personality would be right at home in a middle or high school.

Her adoption of the hero's peaceful ways was equally flimsy. The portrayal of war and peace in this manga is black and white (war is wrong; peace is right; there is absolutely no moral ambiguity in war whatsoever, end of story) that it provided none of the tension and depth that are intrinsic in violent stories. As soon as the hero told her war was wrong, she had a convenient epiphany and agreed. Just like that- even though war has been her whole lifestyle and makes up (in theory) a huge part of her identity, she very easily let go.

This is my first comment basically ever, so please bear with me.

I really liked the art style and the characters, as sappy as they are sometimes. The plot overall is pretty straightforward to the point that whatever vague idea you have of the ending (besides a "plot twist" or two) is probably quite accurate. I'm a little surprised by how highly rated it is, but if you want some fantasy adventure cliche because you love some aspects of fantasy but don't have enough time to read lots of them (like me), then Superior is a pretty good option.

This is just my try on putting my opinion out there. Whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, this series compelled me to type out a comment, so it's definitely "something." It's not a 1, but it's not a 10 either, and I think some people who commented are really invested in only a few aspects and only raging or fangirling about those parts. Like most things, it's not just "love it or hate it." Only the reader can form his or her own opinion, and I just hope that I cleared up some misconceptions about Superior.

It may not be the best one out there, but this is by far, my favorite manga in terms of fantasy romance genre. It has an interesting plot.. can't wait how it unfolds

In the top five

Superior is one of my top five favorite manga in the whole wide world. Why? Because the art is beautiful, the plot is intriguing, and the characters are cool as hell. It is a great manga, just give it a chance. Yes, the beginning is a little rocky and the ideals of the Hero are cliche. He has his reasons, don't just think that he wont kill because he's an average shounen hero. You can identify with all the characters, even the ones that come into play later. You can even relate to the poor walking head grandpa. And the artwork is beautiful and elegant (as it progresses) and you are instantly drawn in.

While there are several problems, I find that they are so insignificant that it is possible to just read it and enjoy it.

Oh, for anyone that wants to know (in no specific order) my faves, here

1.)Taiyou no Ie
2.)Red River
3.)Usotsuki Lily

Manga starts off good, keeps you hooked, interested and the comedy is very good. Don't judge a manga by comments alone, read the first volume and decide for yourself because I found the manga better than what the comments said. My only warning which isn't a warning is the first series of Superior ends like in the middle of the series, and continues into the second series of Superior which is completely scanlated. It is not much of a warning but in reality both series were suppose to be 1 series but it was split for some reason. Recommended for people who enjoy action, comedy and romance.

The mixture of comedy, adventure, and romance is just what I've been looking for. Since the genre listed does not include tragedy, I hope the ending is a happy one.

Honestly, I don't actually know why I gave this manga such a high rating. The art isn't that great. The panelling and storyboard is subpar. Events jump from here to there with no clear timeline. There are deus ex machina by the score, the scanlation isn't all that great, and the first few chapters especially are really awful.

But I liked it. I really liked it. Somehow in the midst of all of that, it managed to pull off a sweet, touching story with likable and distinct characters, a steadily developing romance, and a decent plot. I don't know how it did it, but it did. Strangest thing ever.

(I do have to say, though, that Superior Cross, the sequel, is far... er, superior. To Superior. It was worth reading the prequel to be able to read the sequel.)

Yes, as liquidsin mentioned, there is a sequel to this called Superior Cross. I have not finished reading that, but I really love this manga. I do not agree that it is generic; I've been completely riveted, and I've had the misfortune of reading some sickeningly cliche shoujo (sorry I just can't bring myself to call this shounen hehehe).

Sheila's development as a character, punctuated with her quirky, blood-thirsty humor, really sucks you in. Yes "hero" gets a little carried away with his righteousness and ideals, but he is pretty cute at least :>

While I can't agree 100% with the hero's view either, I still like the series a lot. The art is pretty good though it can be hard to read during detailed scenes (though that's true with a lot of monochrome art). I was all set to write a more negative review due to the lack of an ending but having found out that it is continued under another name has made me happy again. I would like to see some more character development other than in the hero and Sira.
