Description
From Shinnen:

Naraka High School is a seemingly normal school. However, unknown to the public is the cruel truth of what really goes on in the school's halls. Rather than studying, students are forced to struggle for their very survival. And the strong bonds of friendship may be the only difference between life and death.

Very late since I don't use this website much but seeing a comment about the sequel, I thought I'd chime in too. I found out that the continuation of the main story has started some time ago on the website and it was compiled into volume 15 last year!!

Started off very well, mc was a typical stale character with the twist of turning into an OP gary sue, the survival theme of it was executed well at times, other times it just felt very slow and tired and just the way characters are developed doesn't feel right and the story isn't as interesting as I thought it'd be, the power of using characters as weapon is versatile ways was interesting tho

I'm a long term fan of this mangaka's work but I haven't been very vocal about it as you probably can tell in half of these reviews that it basically ended on a major cliffhanger. I've stayed on long enough rereading and researching about any news of a sequal and FINALLY!! I think after 2 years or so she has released it. Its truely a good series but I think its very overshadowed by other popular manga. So I hope people really can spread this around, help to get its sales to go up abit and hopefully Aphorism can get the lime light it truly deserves.

On a side note, sigh honestly after a year and a half of waiting for news I actually thought she was dropped TT _TT but thankfully she managed to come back so 頑張って!! :' wink

Great until author forgets to end it

Aphorism started off great. A somewhat unique twist on the school survival genre. Several characters had interesting powers and I'm somewhat of a sucker for the whole MC transformation stuff. However, as the chapters piled up, so did the plot holes. Many of the characters just kinda disappeared into the background. Even after a satisfying possible ending, the author chose to keep going. Further increasing the stakes until it just ends on a cliffhanger.

The phrase that describes this series "Meh"

Setting somewhat interesting but the world building is painfully slow and the rules are fuzzy at best, that leaves plenty of room for plot holes and plot conveniences. For me this is a huge turn off, it is good to have mystery but that mystery can become superfluous if the author don't establish some ground rules essential for the world, and no - god, superpowers( without distinct range) and survival does not count.
The plot is shallow as it can be - why don't they actually train volunteers, and just trow hundreds of unaware kids "to the wolfs", as long I as I remember there is no rule in the contract that forbid this particular action, I've predicted some plot "twists" ten or twenty chapters before they happen.
The characters are either generic, forgettable or both. Every character that had some potential for real development is killed off in rather anticlimactic way, the best villain of the series of the show that was massive psychopath and killed or tortured a bunch of characters got killed off in one chapter without even punting up a decent fight. There are some characters killed off just for the shock value witch is lacking because you can predict their deaths in advance.
Overall the manga is not down right unreadable but could've been better. If you want to read something with a lot more quality in a similar setting I recommend the book "The library at mount Char" by Scott Hawkins.

this is what i seek for when im looking for manga to read. ive read quite a lot of manga. but now everything seems predictable and the same. this is sooo good. good plot, story, philosophy, good art. i dont mind slow update as long as the quality and consistency of the plot is good.

Great for a quick read

Yeah, so as everyone else has said, Aphorism is really the kind of series that you have to employ a certain amount of suspension of disbelief as the premise is so utterly laughable. After you get past the original necessary brain shut-down, however, Aphorism actually becomes quite enjoyable.

Aphorism is, in short, a series that is going for something utterly original, never mind that, even on a fantasy-level, the idea seems very, very dubious. Now, once you get past the "dubious" part, you have got yourself some nice, gory horror-action with a bit of mystery on the side. It's all very interesting and entertaining, actually, and I find myself looking forward to each new chapter more and more.

The characters are decent. They have somewhat more personality than the traditional shounen heroes (in other words, I can't really sum up their personalities in only one word), and none of them are a particular hardship to watch.

And, the gore, while definitely not on the level of seinen, is quite a bit more graphic than traditional shounens, which I appreciate, the art is really nice, and the paneling is not at all confusing. What more can you ask for, really? (Well, other than a believable premise, but we've been over that already.)

In short, Aphorism is great for a casual read. It isn't anything particularly life-changing, but if you love blood and gore and action to go along with it, this is certainly a worthwhile series to invest your time in.

its pretty good I think. Its exactly what I would expect of a Shounen horror. the reviewers who bashed it I think were expecting more along the lines of a Seinen horror which its clearly not. It does take alittle build time but once it get rolling its been a fun read.

one word of warning the volume count is very deceiving, they are only around 120 pages for the most part so you will zoom through 7 volumes like nothing :/

A Guilty Pleasure.

Aphorism is one of those stories that requires so much willing suspension of disbelief that it might give you a migraine. The idea is interesting but its execution sub-par, the pacing is terrible, the main cast is full of predictable stock characters, the students' reactions to horrible gory deaths are only touched upon (and very unrealistically). It's obvious the author wants to make this a fun high school story whilst also a gritty, survival horror. You just can't have both - not with this execution.

That being said, I like Aphorism a lot a lot. Despite some really stupid elements that had my head reeling in confusion as to what in the WORLD the author was thinking, there were some genuinely interesting plot twists, ideas, and side characters (I am bored with all the main ones) that keep me reading.

So it's a guilty pleasure. If you can get past the first, oh, 3 chapters, you might find yourself liking it. Give it a chance.

Not too gory, lots of great characters, the plot is building up nicely and at a fast, satisfying pace and the atmosphere is great. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of the story, I'm expecting a lot. I'm especially wondering what kind of relation ties Rokudou and
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Krishna.
They obviously have one, why else would
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Krishna
go to such extents to protect Rokudou? My wildest guess is that Rokudou is a dormant incarnation of
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the real Yama
or something like that...
Anyway, great read, can't wait for more! ^_^
