My rating is based on when I first read it in 2011

I first watched the anime in 2010, and as a teenager it was one of the most enjoyable shoujo animes for me. Then I read the rest of the manga while it was still ongoing and absolutely loved it.
Thus this will always be a childhood favourite and my rating is probably biased due to the nostalgia working.
However, the comedy and romance aspect of this manga is very good. It's amazing for a shoujo and quite different from the rest as it lacks the typical weak and stupid female leads.
The dynamic between the two leads is quite fun to read. Thus I'd definitely suggest people to try this.

Telling the guy you're dating to give some space is fine. But not if it means getting closer to another man. That was just pathetic.

Even though I’m not typically a fan of love triangles, slow romances and tsunderes, I ended up really enjoying this manga. These tropes and the story as a whole were written well. The characters are loveable and definitely unforgettable. They’re written convincingly as some characters really get on my nerves, etc.

Good beginning

Let me start off by saying that when I first got into manga and this was ongoing, it was absolutely one of my favorite series. It's very cute and lighthearted and there are a lot of classic shoujo tropes (the poor hard working tsundere protagonist, the rich popular loner love interest, etc.). I enjoy the Usui/Misa relationship a lot because I'm all about that oblivious/pining/possessive love - and they do it really well smile . The art is nice too, and the maid thing provides ample excuse to do different costumes and theme days where all the outfits are just super cute and fun.

As others have said though, if you're looking for a good story with complexity and layers and character growth, this is not the manga for you. Not only do Misaki and Usui not evolve as individuals, their relationship doesn't really evolve either - the feelings don't change or deepen, Misaki just gains the ability to actually be open about said feelings (...sort of). Even the many side characters, despite showing up a lot, don't seem to grow much. And while the plot in the beginning is mainly episodic and straightforward, the more serious storyline that starts about halfway through the manga feels contrived, confusing, and in general poorly executed. It's really too bad, because there were definitely real opportunities for depth that the manga did not take advantage of.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I'm thinking specifically of Aoi-chan's crossdressing not being accepted by his father, and how at some point in the future he apparently...just gives up doing it? Also Misaki's father coming back could have been much more important and hurtful and a cause for growth - but instead his back story is sort of rewritten and he becomes a comedic character instead.

Rating-wise, part one (pre-chapter 33) gets a solid 7 or maybe even 8 for cuteness and nostalgia, while the latter half gets a 4 (5 if i want to be nice and give credit for the manga at least trying to do something different). So ultimately, I'm giving this a 6.

tl;dr: A good choice if you're new to manga and/or looking for something easy to read. Consider just watching the anime instead, which covers the good parts and stops before the bad.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! was pretty boring...

I thought the first few chapters were funny and novel, but it quickly turned into a drag to read the series.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is your typical unnecessarily long romcom shoujo. I can usually enjoy these type of series, but I found this one really lacking. Initially the characters are really cool, but there is pretty much no character development past their cardboard introductions ... They're so flat and predictable. They get stuck in a perpetual cycle of doing the same thing in various subplots and shenanigans, but the subplots/shenanigans are all pretty cliched, so there's no novelty in reading through them. Since, that's the case, hopefully there's some comedy, right? Well, not really. The comedy mostly comes from character reactions, but we already know how the characters are going to react by the umpteenth time, so it's not funny anymore...

So, in the end, I got extremely bored. I guess it's a good read if you haven't been exposed to all the tropes of school shoujo manga, but otherwise, meh...

I'm sorry to say but this manga is just over-rated for me.
When I read this, I believed that I could find some interesting things, but well... I was disappointed

Good for shoujo starters and preteens.

When I was younger, probably my middle school days (I'm a college student now), I used to like this manga quite a lot. I recently finished it and least to say, my opinion as my young adult self differs a lot from my preteen.

Characters - overall, 6.5
Barely any of them had character development and honestly, I couldn't really find anyone super duper memorable or likeable. Even the side characters, most of them - well, were just there. A few had development, but they weren't even focused on and honestly, I felt like Misaki and Usui were the same since chapter 1 aside from Misaki kind of overgrowing her hatred of men.

Usui was dull and boring and literally the definition of Gary Sue - powerful, extremely smart, good at cooking, good at every instrument (probably), superhuman abilities, rich family, sad (?) past, and good-looking. What is there not to like? The fact that he literally has no flaws which by the way, characters should have in order to be an actually GOOD character imo.

I didn't find him likeable, but I guess him being perfect is part of the comedy, right?

I didn't understand the whole Hinata likes Misaki thing - why even bother writing him as a love rival when there literally is no opening for him because Usui's too OP anyways?

Backstories - overall, 5.5
Sort of dumb tbh, I was sort of hoping for Misaki's hatred or bad judgment of men to actually come from a really deep reason, but most of it was father left family and they had to shoulder his debt and it ended up with the mother pretty much lying about him (he went to go help his friend apparently) so their daughters won't worry which was bad because they ended up resenting him and hating him instead.

Sorry, but I felt like it should have been written better instead of something so silly, but then again, this is comedy.

Usui's background was really, really out of place and random and honestly, I felt like it added A LOT of unnecessary drama and literally no character development came out of it imo.

Art - overall, 8.0
Definitely one of the reasons I did like this manga was the adorable art and of course, the maid costumes. However, I did sort of prefer the old art over the newer style. Before, it seemed more neater and cleaner and the characters were all very pretty in a simple sort of way, but later on it becomes more standard shoujo with a bunch of heavy screentones and blushing everywhere.

Romance - overall, 5.5
So basically Misaki fell in love with Usui because unlike other boys, he was the definition of 'perfect' which goes great because it turns around her bad judgment of boys - he was always there to save her, he's suave, he's a stalker, and he's a perverse creep who pulled up her skirt to see what kind of panties she was wearing - of course, this is all justified because he's hot. LOL ok

I have to admit, they had some cute moments honestly, but it was all very cliche and didn't really make me go 'doki doki' sadly as I reread it. Though, I can understand why a lot of readers love this manga a lot and love the romance in it.

It's literally a strong-willed tsundere girl (apparently, I'm sure a lot of young readers can easily relate to Misaki) who gets together with a super perfect guy (attractive appearance and all) and face a lot of really random hardships together.

Ending - overall, 8.0
I liked the ending, I like how it ended with a ten years later version of what happens next to our favorite couple and I love that in shoujo. I love what happens to the relationship in a time skip preview and I think it means a lot of readers. I wish more shoujo manga did this tbh, (-cough- Hirunaka no Ryuusei-) you know, instead of we got together and overcame a lot of stuff - the end.

One thing I have to say though that while I loved the timeskip and all, I felt like the manga dragged on way too much and would have done better if it went like the anime route (Misaki and Usui implied ending basically).

One of my favorite series of all time. Usui Takumi is the awesomest male lead ever. Ayuzawa Misaki is a strong-willed girl, basically a tsundere in my opinion, and her actions can be predictable at times, but the nice romance in this series covers it all up.

<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 (i'm in love)

The main male character Usui Takumi is the love of my life. No matter how unrealistically perfect he is, I won't give up the hopes of one day snatching someone of his level. yes. I will snatch the person!

Anyways, I fell in love with the dynamic between usui and misa from chapter 1. They are both badass, determined, and independent. They have different lives, goals, and dreams. But they come together and work through their various obstacles together without abandoning their own personal dreams and aspirations. And this is what I believe to be a truly healthy relationship between lovers. I have so much respect for these two. They are the perfect tag-team, and complement each other by standing back to back, covering for one another's faults.

Unlike what the unfavorable comments say, the reason I liked this story was BECAUSE there WAS character development. Misa starts out as a stubborn and judgmental demon who hates ALL men, and is eventually tempered by Usui's natural calmness. Usui, on the other hand, becomes more passionate than before due to Misa's fiery nature, and finally has something worth fighting for. (being the sad genius that he was, life was pretty boring until Misa came along) Both of them reach a happy medium by the end, and find solace in one another. They changed themselves into better people!

Humor was also pretty nicely snugged into the series. I laughed so many times that I've lost count. And gosh, some moments of the series had ME blushing along with the characters. Ha ha.

The art is also gorgeously drawn, and Usui becomes hotter with every new release. (is that even possible?) The ONLY downside of this manga was the side characters. The side characters did not have a chance to develop as much as the main couple did. Still, a few of them changed a lot and the author never forgot about them! smile I just wish the manga ended earlier, because the last few chapters actually dragged the series down.
