Somewhere in Tokyo, there is a room. In that room is a black sphere. Periodically, people who should otherwise have died are transferred to the room. There, the sphere gives them special suits and weapons and sends them out on a mission to kill aliens here on Earth. While these missions take place, the rest of the world is largely oblivious to them. These missions are lethal and few participants survive them. The sphere calls the shots and it's not the slightest bit nice. Its name: Gantz.

A very good, yet hard to take to manga. The first few volumes really just seem to wallow in its own self-pity, so to speak. But everything picks up a great deal after/during the temple scene. The main character who, at first seems like a sniveling cowardly brat, with nothing in his mind but what's in his pants, but he develops greatly, becoming a character with a lot of personality and depth, bringing along admirable morals and acting with inspriing courage. Tho the artwork is... intense... during pretty much the whole manga, its pretty good alll the same.

This is just an incredible manga series. I started by watching the anime and was quickly drawn into the Gantz world. The anime had many short comings especially the ending (the last round after the temple was just stupid) so I started reading the manga.

The character and story development that really gets going after the temple drew me into the series ever more. The lastest developments in the story have had me on the edge my seat. Gantz teams all over the world, cults, the guys in black suits, Kei's brother. The story is continously building towards something bigger but building to what is anybodys guess. You just never know what is going to be thrown at the characters next.

My only complaint is that the author keeps releasing his weekly series no more then 2 chapters a month.

Now listen the only reason i gave it a nine was because it could have been better and it lost some of its edge after iv'e seen it once. Now i had weed to enhance the flavor of the anime and its the only manga ive read besides Berserk how ever it has to be the best fu*kin thing ive seen in a long time but give it about half a year and ill probrably get sick of it, wait about another half a year and start haveing withdrawls from not watching.

Gantz is a well done manga. The only beef I have with it is I'm not a fan of jumping right into the action from the beginning, although it wasn't too bad with this manga. Other than that, artistic quality is insanely detailed, and well laid-out. I get tired of reading paragraphs of explanations of story I don't care all that much for. Instead there is lots of action, and character development occurs not only with verbal communication with each other but also their actions within the story. Much of the background to the manga remains a mystery, and I can't wait for each chapter to come out. I was never really into DBZ, when battles dragged on I really got sick of watching it. The difference with Gantz is that take a long time to get through but they actually have action most of the time, unlike DBZ in which there is a lot more bragging and gasping and whatnot. And when there isn't action, it gets into deeper character developement, as characters question the position they're in, and further their relationship with others. The concept is strange at first, but you get used to it, and it becomes much more exciting and unique. Definitely worth the read.

I notice a lot of the reviewers seem to have a lot of problems with character development and story. They are entitled to their own opinion, but I strongly disagree. If you stick with the manga, you notice that the characters (who live) grow throughout the volumes and become different and even likeable people. Especially the main character. Many people don't really like the continuous battles, but I think they are suspencefull and really well done. My only strong dislike for the manga is the constant fanservice, occasional random sex scenes, and women with unrealistically gigantic boobs posing on chapter covers and what not. It's so unnecessary. I think the story would be a lot stronger if the author wasn't constantly forcing this into the plot when it really isn't relevant and doesn't relate to the story at all. Anyway, if you can ignore this, and you like swoot battles and nifty ideas and the like, you should definetly give this addictive manga a try. I'm on volume 19 and I can't wait till they translate more.

Good art, too bad the author doesn't know the first thing about making a decent story, and interesting character developments. If you think DBZ was bad... well this is DBZ for the "adults" who still couldn't quite get over DBZ....

Fight fight fight die die die win *repeat. If you enjoy banality, senseless violence and tons of fan service, read this For everyone else, there's Berserk and Blade of the Immortal.
