Tohru Honda, an orphaned high-school girl, is taken in by the wealthy Shigure Sohma when he realizes she has nowhere else to go. However, the Sohma family shares a secret, and it isn't long before Tohru discovers that there's a reason why her classmates, Yuki and Kyo Sohma, never let girls get near them, and never talk about their lives before they lived with Shigure. And before she knows it, Tohru has become so tangled up in the lives of each member of the Sohma family that she couldn't leave even if she wanted to.

As she learns more and more about the truth of the Sohma family and the nature of their secrets, she desperately searches for a way that she can save them. But what can one girl do, especially when it seems that she may have been part of someone's plan all along . . .

Fruits Basket received the 2001 Kodansha Manga Award in the shoujo manga category and the "Best Manga" award at the 2007 American Anime Awards.

Can't judge a book by its cover

My first impression from the first few chapters was that it's going to be another happy-go-go manga but after reading more, I discovered there was more to it: Angst, despair, hopelessness. However, the plot does tend to drag itself out a lot so there are some dull moments.
The art isn't bad but I can't honestly say that I love the style.

The author isn't running out of ideas, it's just a slow moving story. This manga has always progressed at a snail's pace which can be frustrating at times, but I'm going to continue to read. If the author wanted to continue the manga for as long as the money held out she wouldn't have created a large twist that puts such a definite end-time to the story, which is approaching very soon.

Starts beautifully but it becomes a plotless sugarcoated manga. The author noticed this sells and she's keeping it running even if she herself is running out of ideas. Boring lately. Such a waste.

i can just say i love it beacause i have the anime(season1) and the manga books it wierd i guess its pretty good the first time i read it i liked it then when i understood it more and more i came to love it i mean i guess the reason i love it so much was beacause of kyo THATS RIGHT!! of kyo his attitude was just hot and awsome. then toward yuki i did not like him at all i kind of hate him (no offense yuki fans)he seems to girly (but nice in a way).though the way the parents react scares me a liittle by how kyo father treats kyo and yuki mother is to yuki sad and creepy(HA but if you think it nonesense then what ever to you er.... the whatever sounded wierd and shallow Ah!!whocares i love the anime and manga and thats final ^^ i love kyo!!!! ihope he windsup with tohru well to all you kyo lovers and yuki lovers lets see who wins seriously if i were tohru i choose kyo he just so hooooot!!!!! love haru to he just so cute his voice on the anime was so cute i think kyo #1 haru is #2 still the manga is pretty popular i cant wait to see who tohru stay with well that about it seeya ^^.

This is the single worst manga I have ever read. The story is awful, the dialogue is horrid, and the art is a joke. Don't waste your time on it.

this manga is bad. I don't know maybe it's because I am a guy but I found it was boring, had a bad plot and characters. Deserves a 0.

I LOVE this manga... while the art isn't as good as CLAMP and Tanemura Arina, and it's not action-exciting all the time, but, I have got to say, in terms of serious themes/messages and realistic portrayals of people, Takaya-sensei is best >_<. It's really a serious (but cute and funny too sometimes!) manga about finding the stories/secrets/backgrounds behind why people are the way they are.

It is very interesting to observe the psychology of the characters, they are all very well thought-out and each is unique with their own story to tell. Even though the zodiac curse is the opposite of reality, the people who are under the curse, their fears, their individual sufferings, their loneliness and feeling of isolation are all very real. It is beautiful to watch Tohru and slowly everyone reaching out to each other and really live. And everyone learns a lesson of some sort from each other, even Tohru. I can relate to so many of the characters, even if it's a small aspect or to smaller extents.

It's a great series, that really becomes more interesting just after the 16 vol. It's the time in wich many secrets come to life, and you start to understand more and more. It's a very sad and romantic manga, and I love it. It's my fav, and i just can't wait to see the ending... Go Tohru.. Go Kyo ^^
