Second biggest wasted potential ever

What a waste of potential, the series started off rather well and was mildly interesting. However, when they ditched the RPG feel for the tournaments the whole series falls apart. You could see towards the end that the mangaka got sick and tired of the series and wanted to rush and be done with this POS. And the twist at the end of the series is one of the most retarded plot twist I have ever seen. Very disappointed.

MAR is a decent story for Shounen fans. Its plotline, like most other mangas, follows a generic pattern so that a little before midway you can tell all the major plot twists, even the ones that were ment to stun the reader. Also, near the end it kinda fizzels out and doesnt quite meet your expectations, but is still a good story.

This manga is awesome, but the ending is a little bit disappointing. I knew that King was Ginta's father, but to find him right after War Game and defeating him so fast ... it's kinda disappointing ...

MAR start off promising, but later, its all about action. All character in the manga given a personality, past, a reason to fight and some skill. Kinda boring when you see one picture box for each character in the end. Doesnt mean anything to me. The plot is weak, start from fighting, till the final boss, and end by fighting.
The action itself is plain too. One cast a skill, and the opponent react to the skill by another skill. In the end, it just repeat this step. Other than the skill part, the character hardly develop. Really wasted my time

This series was good, not great in any way, but still entertaining. Art was average, chars were average, plot was average and the battles ok. It came together quite nicely as well in many parts, if not all.
The big problem though is that a battle could take a complete volume in one case and a more even one could take half a chapter. This strange pacing really threw of the enjoyment in some parts. You really never did know if you would get a long battle or a bundle of small ones in a row, it kind of disturbed me.

We all know MAR bears several resemblances to Recca. A lot of people who don't like it have commented that this lack of originality is the manga's major flaw. Really though, it isn't - after all, Recca was hardly original either (e.g. look at YYH), yet managed to be a lot more entertaining, one of my favorites in the genre in fact.
For me, MAR's main problem is that it lacks direction and focus. It all just seems superficial, as if the central storyline had been predetermined in mad-lib form, after which other characters and events were whimsically chosen to fill the blanks. It certainly doesn't help that the atmosphere often clashes with story (imagine mario characters in resident evil). In the end, I'd rather just re-read something else .
