Two young men vow to transform the destiny of Japan, by any means. As children, they survived the horrors of the Cambodian killing fields together. Now, can they topple the leaders of both the Japanese Parliament and the yakuza crime syndicate?

Although cold and calculating when need be, Hojo and Asami exemplify the traits their colleagues lack: loyalty to friends, compassion for the downtrodden...and an irresistible way with women.

Deputy Police Chief Ishihara sets out to expose their ingenious machinations, but instead falls helplessly in love with Hojo...

While this was originally 12 volumes in Japanese, when translated into English by Viz it was printed three ways: first in comic book form (each issue had 2 chapters), second in a 5-part 14-vol compilation of the comic books, and finally in a 9 volume manga series. Because the translation is so early, the books were flipped to English left-to-right orientation.

The nine English volumes correspond to these compilation parts, floppy issues, and original chapters:

V1: Part 1, Issues 1-4, Chapters 01-12
V2: Part 1, Issues 5-9, Chapters 13-27
V3: Part 2, Issues 1-5, Chapters 01-13
V4: Part 2, Issues 5-9, Chapters 14-26
V5: Part 3, Issues 1-7, Chapters 01-13
V6: Part 3, Issues 7-8, Chapters 14-16; Part 4, Issues 1-5, Chapters 01-09
V7: Part 4, Issues 5-7, Chapters 10-14; Part 5, Issues 1-3, Chapters 01-05
V8: Part 5, Issues 3-8, Chapters 06-15
V9: Part 5, Issues 8-13, Chapters 16-22

I feel like a person when I read storyes like these. Yep, superheros. Yep, wild dreams. But when I finish reading I get this urge to do something. You know, when you hear a really good song you can;t help but sing, or write lyrics... etc.

Well I don't quite except everything about this manga - a powerful policewoman without any power, or establishment of some realtionsships, for example.

ps but these kind of manga are still needed, at least it makes you think...

I mostly agree with Ichen. this story is really good and art is just fantastic but what is wrong with that cop woman? she is pathetic and whiny even when carrying a gun she acts like a weak, fragile person. always under the influence of the males around her, she really doesn't have any good impression on me. If I have to choose, I'd say Hojo is the only one who caught my attention.

I gave it a 10/10, good plot and character development. Also love the art...the only thing I was a little touchy on was the ending. Did he die didn't he die? I want to know!

The story is fairly interesting, and can easily draw you in, and the characters can be likable in their own way. That being said, anyone who genuinely thinks this manga's plot is anything short of ridiculous needs help, at first it starts out as being passable, but by volume 9 or 10 its pretty out there. Also around the same time (volume 9 or 10) the manga goes from being a fairly interesting gangster/ political manga to basically being something best described as a completely over the top political statement (not saying the statements wrong just I donít need to see it on every other page). Far from being the best manga out there, but for anyone who likes gangster related manga, I would strongly suggest reading it.

Note: lchen's comment also summerizes the manga up pretty well in my opinion

This is an amazing manga! The art really surprises you by how good it is. I'm almost reluctant to call this a manga if it's judged by art alone, it's that realistic and brilliant.
Both the graphical and the written content is mature. I guess that's both a blessing and a curse but i've been waiting for the next epic mature manga!
One thing bothers me though. The manga is so damn japanese patriotic...
It gets pretty annoying from time to time when they have to constantly show how proud and good japanese are...

It started good, but all the political BS and ways to change japan became a little ridiculous.
One memorable moment were the reception of the US minister.
After she is told how and shown how japanese cars are awesome, she's "defeated" and sent home to US with a valuable lessen taught (it doesn't matter what colour "IT" has, and long as you're getting the shit f***ed out of you!).

If you're able to understand politics and other elements in this manga, then I guess you'll enjoy this manga too. Oh well, the way it treats females is one thing but I guess stuff by Shinjo Mayu and many other mangaka rival it.

Great but available versions wrong format (9/10 when someone presents it in correct format)

Great Manga but it needs a new treatment by some non finacially motivated scanlators or different official translators (ie someone/anyone who isn't dumb enough to think that flipping something to left to right to get the most narrow minded people to read is worth the damage it does to content).

If it weren't for the amazing story by Buronson (I hope that someone translates his Manga "Heat" so we can see more of his crime work) and great art (Ryoichi Ikegami showing the skills that helped him work with Kazuo Koike and stand near equal to Koike's more common artist Goseki Kojima) I would have given into laughter and given the manga up at the fact that the flip has produced a fantasy world where every gangster in Tokyo and Hong Kong is a left handed gunman and everyone in Japan drives American cars on the wrong side of the road (presumably any frames in the manga depicting America, I forget if there were any, would show Americans driving British cars on the wrong side of their roads).

The 7.5 I give will go up to at least 9 upon the existance of a better transcription in that aspect (even if I cannot bring myself to reread all 2700 or so pages I will be glad that someone will get this in it's full glory rather than the slightly dilluted form shown here

Great Series

This series is great, though I don't think there really are any such great men like Asami and Hojo today that could inspire such great change. Their principles and theories are sound, however, keep in mind that this is a manga, and certain elements of the story are geared towards sales, such as the woman and more. And rape, although we would like to disbelieve so, happens much more than we notice. In addition, the people in this story are actually human, opposed to the average manga character, which exemplify certain, and not all qualities of normal people.

i admit the story is addictive and art is good. i hope no one is readin this too seriously, their ideas for a better country r wacked and their treatment of women is degrading at best, appalling at worst. all the lead men r suffering from extreme megalomania and no one shows one shred of anything resembling human emotion. all the women r either used sexually(often raped) or as pawns. the lead female is supposed to be a hot shot detective but she has one guy do all her work(and she still gets nothing done, she solves no crimes!) and she has a high school crush on the yakuza after a really stupid first meeting (involving psuedo rape)
