Description
The start of high school life. To the girls, that also meant the start of their love lives. For brand new first year student, Takahashi Nanami (Nana for short), it was no different... She happens to end up in the same class as the incredibly popular Yano Motoharu, who rumors say that two thirds of all the girls are guaranteed to fall in love with. But will that hold true for Nana, who says that if she had to choose between like or dislike, she'd say she dislikes him!?

Note: Won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo in 2005.

mixed feelings

I ended up really disliking Takahashi after only a couple of volumes and the feeling didn't really go away at all
The story dragged allot later on as others have mentioned and I think the only reason I kept reading was to see what happened to Takeuchi, and Yamamoto Yuri (probably the only character I actually liked)

Definitely felt like it dragged out a lot at the end which was a shame. To me one of the biggest pro's about this was that the love triangle looked like it could have gone to the 'unlikely' guy during the high school years before it started to drop off and become clear the guy had no chance, even with what happens later on.

Love/Hate

I had a Love/Hate relationship with this manga. I loved all the characters and the events that happened but I would sometimes find myself wanting it to hurry up and end already. I wish it took an even deeper dive into things, it would sometimes seem a bit shallow and unclear. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of emotions that run throughout the manga but it was missing something... and it also seemed a bit repetitive or so. Don't get me wrong, it was good but it had the potential to be so much more. That's the negative part of it but here's the positive:

I loved the main characters. I loved how imperfect Yano was and I loved Nana's will to keep going no matter what happened, to never give up on their relationship. I loved all the side characters as well and their support for them despite their feelings. The characters were very selfless and only wished for the other persons happiness. The plot was very well made. It's a cliche story-- hot guy with problems, nice girl fixes it all-- but it had a bit more depth to it and it wasn't purely physical. One thing i really liked about this manga is Yano's feelings for Nana. It was so much more than just the girl from high school but more so that he really needed her. He needed and wanted her love so passionately and you can really see that in him. It's a manga about loving and being loved in return and going through obstacles that will shake the relationship but also make it stronger. Definitely a manga about -Love-

I honestly loved this. There were a few chapters
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
namely the flashbacks from Aki's point of view
that felt like they were seriously dragging on, but the rest was really good. I almost cried at several points. Honestly, I have watched the first episode of the anime and read the first six or seven chapters of the manga many times, but never got past them because Yano pissed me off. When I finally stuck with it and just kept going, I didn't regret it at all. This is such a beautiful story about life, love, and tragedy.

Time for the breakdown! (If you don't want to read all this, just skip to the very bottom. I'll tell you if I recommend it or not.)

Plot: 9.5/10
This was a really good story. It wasn't quite "cute" -- more along the lines of "tragically beautiful." So much happened in Yano's life, and Nanami was there for him when she could be. Of course, Nana has feelings just like everyone else, and I really liked how she reacted just like I would.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Honestly, if your boyfriend called you to cancel a very important milestone in your relationship to be with another girl (whom he has a history with, no less) without explaining things properly, wouldn't you be hurt, too? And her reaction to everything that happened in the second half of the manga was really realistic, too, seeing as it was depressing as all get out.
Everything was really realistic and beautiful, but tragic and painfully sad, as well. I didn't cry except for once, at the very end, because it was just too sweet how
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Yano's knees gave out when he saw that she wasn't hurt nearly as bad as everyone was making it out to be and he just kind of sat there and bawled.
My -.5 on this was because of a few chapters that seemed to drag on forever

Characters: 10 (This one was difficult to grade, honestly, because they're all well-rounded characters, I just hated one of them: Yuri. She's the type of person you want to sign up for a session with a psychiatrist, ASAP. But when I took a step back from my personal feelings for her and looked at all the characters logically, they were very well done.)
Okay, where to start? Yano was so sad and sweet and romantic and just so... Yano, I guess, that I wanted to hug him. Nanami was an awesome character, very cute but still realistic. She wasn't always cheerful and pure of heart, and though she cried a lot, she never shed tears where they weren't appropriate. I would have cried at all the same times as her, even if tears didn't actually fall. Yano cried, too, so that's what made this manga so much more endearing to me. Take was so sweet and kind and gentle. If I didn't love Yano so incredibly much, I would have wanted Nanami to end up with him. All of the other characters were great and well-written as well, including unloved Yuri and even dead Nana. All in all, very well done.

Art: 9.5/10
The art was very beautiful and showed the characters' emotions very well. I loved the scenes when Yano and Nanami would just kind of stop and smile for a while all goofy-like at whatever they were doing, portraying that feel-good atmosphere very well. However, in the later chapters, there were a few pages and even a whole chapter (chapter 59, I do believe) where the art was completely unfinished. It looked like a rough sketch that the mangaka didn't even bother completing. It took a lot away from what happened right then, but luckily it was only a few times so it didn't harm the story. Other than that, the characters were very attractive and the art in general was very appealing.

All in all: 9/10. Definitely recommended. smile

EDIT: Reading this again as a college student who is almost 19, I can't remember why I loved it so much. I enjoyed it, but it's SO BLEEPING SAD. Like, the whole time, I kept wanting to hold my arms out to Yano, say "Come here, baby," and never ever ever let him go. I used to want a love like this, but I couldn't handle it. I'm not that strong. It's a good read, but I don't recommend it to people easily depressed. It's like Mars, but all the bad things seem to happen to one person instead of the load being shared. I love it, but the bittersweetness is sometimes far more bitter than it is sweet.

I've actually bought all the English version of the manga books licensed by Viz Media's Shojo Beat (waiting for the last volume). It's such an emotional roller-coaster, all of the scenes, whether heart-ache or happiness, they're all beautiful. You can really feel the feelings being conveyed, and it makes you want to read on. Yano and Nanami have an unbreakable bond, and I think it's amazing. Obata Yuuki has really done a good job in developing and untwisting each character that you can't really dislike anyone. The reason for Yano's shield toward the world is because of the painful past/present he's had to face, and it's literally made me tearful because it's so beautifully sad. I love Nanami's strong-willed independent personality, a perfect shoujo heroine. I also love how the story began in high school, and finished when they're age 26 (I think?) so it's in sync with how many years the manga had been in Betsu-Comi. It shows, even though love isn't as perfect and cliche as most shoujo manga make it out to be, love can overcome many obstacles, no matter how long it takes, there'll always be a brighter tomorrow. This is by far my favourite manga. 10/10.

For Emotional Mature People

When I first read this manga, I was 13 and I HATED it. I thought it was depressing and I hated Yano for his decisions. But then I decided to give it a try again just last year and started to understand, not relate to because these characters are freaking deep, the characters actions. Yano feels he has an obligation to be with certain people although it may not necessarily be what he wants. He is haunted by his past. I feel that only people who are able to appreciate deep stories and aren't afraid to cry their eyes out and be internally and externally frustrate for a good 40 chapters will enjoy this. Because I can honestly tell you that I did. It's different, original, and if you're looking for a fluffy vanilla manga, I can assure you, you will not find it here.

Bokura Ga Ita is about true love, the "reality of love." So be prepared to cry not because it's depressing but because it's nostalgic & relatable. Anyway It takes a lot of maturity & experience to appreciate this type of story. I recommend this series to people like me who wants deep & meaningful romance. It's a good story, I promise you.

This series was pretty good up until where the anime series ended. The 30+ chapters after that dragged on for too long. The ending was alright. Takeuchi-kun, I love him. He is too kind.

Its this manga that always made me reflect about what love is rlly all about. Its not about happiness but instead its test you how much you believe in true love. like they said, inside every pain there is glory and this manga potrayed that. The realistic aspects of love, which i myself have experience. if i was to write my own story every bit of words to my story has alrdy been potrayed, with bokura ga ita smile

Worth the sadness?

In essence, this was mostly about being alone and self hatred. The story itself was like getting sucker punched in the stomach a few dozen times, standing back up in agony and experiencing it again. Each blow made it harder to have a chance of ever smiling again during the manga. No matter how many bandaids this author tries to provide for the characters broken hearts, it never did make up for the depression. It's good, just not for someone with chronic depression or suicidal thoughts -_-''.
Didn't make me cry though, but depressed as all hell afterwards.
