Well.. I think it started out interesting, but then I slowly got bored. So much was happening all the time, and the manga just couldn't keep my interest :/

I very much like this story and characters, however I do agree that the story seem to be rushed at the end.

Disjointed

I loved the first two quirky volumes as much as the next fan, and naturally when it was announced that it would finally be finished after ten years, I was cautiously optimistic. But Hatori's art AND story telling styles had changed so much that the second two volumes simply don't fit. To be blunt it's because volumes 1-2 were fun and breezy and 3-4 took themselves WAY too seriously.

On the whole I'd say it's still worth checking out, but it would have been much better if she could have given it a real ending during its original run.

Split In Two

One thing must be made apparent: this work was put on hiatus for many years as Bisco Hatori-sensei worked on Ouran High-School Host Club. As such, the style of art and storytelling is split between two different parts.

The first part is a decidedly 90s style. The style Hatori-sensei uses at this point looks especially hand-drawn without looking like a rough sketch, and so is very appealing.

Her style of writing at this point is incredibly comedic, never really spending too much time on darker elements. Even so, this doesn't detract from payoff of the story; characters still feel strong and the messages don't feel tacked on at all.

The second part is very obviously post-2010, with very smooth-looking art and more laid-back characterization. Things are much less exaggerated, and it makes for an excellent look.

The characters certainly seem to have grown up in the year that has passed over the real-life hiatus. Not only a creative use of such a story gap, but also a good way of explaining the change in general tone as well as giving a reason for winter to have come once again. The story becomes much more serious by the end; the series may have started out light-hearted, but it is hard to call it a comedy in the strictest sense.

Of course, Hatori-sensei has a way of infusing energy and humor into everything she writes, and this is no different. An excellent starting point and sign of good things to come all in one sequence.

Everything's fine except the heroine

Chiyuki is such a martyr. Does she have a character flaw? From what I can tell, no. She is a flawless human being. And that is incredibly aggravating. That aside, this is a decent shoujo series. It's cliched, it can get boring, but it's reasonably funny and has some good moments. A lot of people compare this to Ouran (because the mangaka abandoned this in favor of Ouran), and I think it was a wise decision because the heroine in this manga is just unbearably good.
That being said, if you're really into supernatural romance and don't mind a goody two shoes heroine, this is a good series to check out.

One of the best manga ever

The story begins with Touya a vampire who is grappling with a 1000 year lifespan as an outsider, a monster, and Chiyuki a sickly human girl who is grappling with her impending death at the age of 17. The question that is asked throughout the series is if Touya is willing to make Chiyuki his partner and have her suffer through immortality as a vampire, never truly living as a human again and suffering through pain that can be worse than death itself. To Chiyuki, she wants to live and experience all life has to offer with Touya beside her. The differences in their circumstances shape the way they approach the concept of a 1000 year lifespan.

Interesting look at immortality and love. Beautiful story and it's amazing to watch it unfold. So happy this was continued after a 10 year hiatus because the ending is amazing!
