I really like this series, though I can appreciate it's not for everyone. A lot of people can't get past the premise, and would consider most (if not all) of the sex scenes in the manga rape. Since I don't think yaoi is supposed to be extremely realistic and serious, I didn't mind. In real life Morinaga and Tatsumi might be considered scary, unpleasant people, but this is fiction. If you want realistic, go read Sakura Gari. If you think a love story between a neurotic, abusive, homophobic closet case and an adorable serial rapist sounds like it could be interesting, this is the right manga for you.

As for the rest, the art is good to begin with, and it only gets better as it goes on. The pace is also good, it doesn't drag or get suddenly weird later on. The story sort of sucks you in and it doesn't feel repetitive despite the fact that character development is really slow. The ending did feel a little rushed to me, but satisfying nonetheless.

I wish there were more long, quality-consistent yaoi manga out there. This one gets an enthusiastic 10 from me.

I don't get all the fuss about non-con regarding this manga. I'd say whoever seriously thinks the whole series is some rape fantasy hasn't really read it. The first time it happened was definitely rape but only the first time and even that wasn't planned or anything. It wasn't graphic, it wasn't cruel so as rape goes this was pretty tame.

When you look at the story more closely, all the pieces click. The "blackmail" is basically Morinaga saying he'll leave if Souichi can't give him what he wants from their relationship. Hardly criminal, right? If Morinaga really was sexually abusing him, wouldn't Souichi want him gone? The only reason it's even labelled as blackmail is because Souichi needs an excuse for giving in. And the way I see it, Souchi doesn't refuse the sex because he doesn't want it, but rather because he doesn't want to want it, and there's a big difference... He just doesn't want to be a homo and this manga makes great use of the whole denial trope. I was actually more shocked by Souichi's violent outbursts than Morinaga's sexual behavior.

As for the rest, well the characters are all wonderful. Morinaga is super sweet, sympathetic and easy to relate to. There's also great character development especially when it comes to Souichi and the couple growth is truly touching. For such a funny manga this is very deep. The art is great and the sex scenes are some of the most sensual you'll ever read...

Highly recommend! ♥ And if you decide to read it, don't merely skim through it or you might just miss the whole point...

Hot and touching guilty pleasure

An excellent guilty pleasure in the escapist fantasy genre.

The author manages to deliciously draw out the typical "in denial" trope, and have the story progress slowly and ~naturally enough, with the help of clichés all right, but somehow making it work, and spicing things up with lovely tension and some of the hottest sex I've ever read. It runs out of steam somewhat towards the end around the time they go to Canada, and the ending was totally predictable and anticlimactic. It totally took me by surprise that I'd reached the end since so little emphasis was put on the "first time they made love". Sure it ended the way I expected it to, but I was waiting for something more remarkable to finish those 8 volumes.

Still I really liked that while one "dominated" (not in a D/s or SM way) in bed, the other had the upper hand in their "public life", that the seme was the kind-hearted one, open with his sentiments, while the uke was the tyrant. I appreciated the bid for originality and tentative to break the seme/uke mold if anything else, it helped maintain a sense of balance that is completely lacking from lots of yaoi and which always makes me uncomfortable.

There were many heart-breaking and heart-warming moments when Souichi let the façade crumble and allowed himself to get close to Morinaga (I'm thinking after the fire for example) which made the whole experience really enjoyable as you got attached to the characters. The first yaoi I read when I started in the genre, and I'll keep a good memory of it.

It's a matter of taste but I understand how this manga might skeeve people, and with reason. If you're not ready or can't consider this as something related to sexual fantasies and that rape/forceful sex/dubcon isn't one of your kinks (I personally discovered that it was when first reading this ^^') then it'd be best indeed for your to pass your way.

That being said, this is no dark cesspit of morality with rape everywhere either. That the first sexual encounter is a rape is sadly a fact, and a really unnecessary one where I think the author bowed to the ~expectations of the genre
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Morinaga could have perfectly decided to withdraw from uni after drunkenly confessing and being rejected for example, which would have set the story just as well
and it could be a deterrent for many, but thankfully it wasn't for me, because the story only got better from there. I'd encourage people who can to suspend their disbelief and put their escapist-fantasy goggles on for a short while, as the evolution of the relationship and of Souichi's feelings and behaviour is pretty good and true to character after that.

I don't consider *any* of the sex that happens afterwards as rape, because a) we're in yaoi-land, I'd be all for emasculating Morinaga if it were RL, but realism is not the point here b) in the "logic" of the story, as Morinaga points out, Souichi only seems to be looking for an excuse and c) he even admits that there's no one else he'd do that with, no one else the "emotional blackmail" would work for anyway. And also, because the sex was hot so I didn't mind so much :3 I *am* a pervy fangirl after all.

Really good! But the first 5 volumes didn't do it justice

Where should I start. This manga actually started to be enjoyable for me by volume 6 or let's say by volume 5, it was as if there was an awakening or something and the author changed the writing style almost completely.

The first volumes make the negative ratings and reviews kinda understandable, I myself thought of dropping it so many times at first. The author kept dragging the whole tsundere/forceful sex/rejection story and it was stretched to the moon, which made the first 5 volumes repetitive and frustrating. Moreover, the fact that there was rarely any pov from Tatsumi's side in the first volumes that can show his thoughts & feelings, made the whole relationship at first quite disturbing and confusing but when we started seeing things from Tatsumi's point of view later on (after volume 5) everything was clarified and we understood why he was allowing that kind of forceful relationship at first.

Maybe to prepare the future readers and make the first 5 volumes understandable, "Abuse" should be added to the categories/tags of this manga, because at first there was assault and there was abuse from both sides actually, as in my opinion, Morinaga was emotionally abused by Tatsumi but then again if there was any point of views from Tatsumi's side at first (like later on in the manga) I could've made sense a bit of what was happening.

Also this manga had so much potential of being a psychological one, both the characters and the whole relationship is very complex but even though it got way better later on, I think it could've been deeper.

As a conclusion, future readers give this manga a chance as it's really a good story and this relationship is very unique, just be patient for the first few volumes.

Also a general advice to readers, not all stories are meant to be lovey-dovey and respectful, there are abusive relationships and bad starts to relationships happening in real life, hence the tag "slice of life", but I acknowledge that it seemed as if the author tried to romanticize what was happening in the beginning, which was a mistake, maybe the author left it to the reader to put a label on the situation at first, but nonetheless I think adding an "Abuse" tag might correct/explain that a bit, and again for me, everything made sense later on in the manga.

At the end, I can say that I liked and enjoyed this story a lot (starting from volume 5 onward), It certainly does not deserve the low ratings at all. Future readers, just give it some time and read it all, you won't regret it.

Well this manga remind me of my college affair XD

Firstly first this is my very first time to give a comment here since i usually a kind of passive reader here?hehe and please please excuse my english or grammar mistake cause my english is not that good, sorry. But why i brave myself despite my bad english want to give a comment here because i kind of experienced this kind of relationship by myself. Well not to the point until sex scene though.

So i was in my college when i fell in love with my friend who is same sex gender. And i am straight. She is too. But i dont know how this feeling develop between us. its just i fall in love with her. she is kind of manly or butchy-in lesbian term (?) and maybe i kind of longing for someone that can take care of me and give a manly aura around them. I had a boyfriend before but he is not that manly as her for god sake lol. Even my friend's boyfi also said that she is like a boy and manly. So thats maybe i fall in love with her. But like i said before im straight and i think that feeling for her is so wrong for me. It just not right. We are kind of know each other feeling. She even said you love me/like me right? But i prefer to not answer it and take that as a joke. But God knows how my heart gonna explode at that time and how awkward the situation.

It was her who always have a courage to push this relationship a little higher, like we often go out together at night or in satnite, and at that time she even had a boy that like her and hit on her and he asked her to go out at saturday night but she turned his offered down and asked me instead to go out with her spending the night together in the lake in the city. She always said sweet things to me, like i like you you know, or dont do that kind stuff or i will fall in love with you even deeper from now, and she always take care of me, carresed my hair, pat my hair, hold my hand, that kind of couple things. And my heart sure go crazy with that. When she always sweet to me, in the other hand i always moody with her. Like this day i really want to see her, miss her, longing for her touch, but in the other day i kind of hate her for doing that, hate her for this kind relationship between us, hate this feeling for her. I wonder if thats like Souichi's feeling here haha

Im so moody, and in the end it always felt so wrong for me, this is not right, i felt disgust with me, us. And fyi i really dont mind or offended with gay people, its their right their bussines so im really fine with that. I even have a gay friend and perfectly fine with that, and somehow i find that they are interesting in a good meaning here. But maybe because im totally straight so that i found this relationship between us is disgusting. And now we both have graduated for college, she found a job back in her hometown and she still message or call me saying i miss you, dont you miss me, or lets go out together this weekend, that kind of stuff. But i always deny this feeling. I answer her once a while, but i cant lie to my heart that i still miss her and longing for her.

And with that, i kind of understand how Shouichi's feeling in this manga. Well maybe in my point of view myself haha, but seriously when i read this manga it really remind me of my forbidden feeling when i was in a college haha. Wew i should give a comment about this manga and here i am telling everyone about my story instead, sorry people..but i cant help it cause it feels like this manga really portrayed how i felt back then. Again sorry for my bad english ><

Well, this manga does have some moral flaws - but only in the beginning, really (I've read all 8 volumes). But well, I've read a lot of yaoi and I've read a lot of yaoi stories that have been far more morally twisted, this is fluffy stuff compared to that, imo. Pop-rape, if I have to give it a term. And well, the only time there actually occurs rape is @spoiler: in the first volume. Afterwards it's just forceful sexual intercourse, haha.

The moral aspect put aside, this is an enjoyable yaoi-read. Yes, there are plenty of clichés, plenty of (fairly forceful) sex scenes and plenty of obvious twists, but that doesn't change the fact that I didn't get bored while reading this - at all. Maybe I have a little fetish for forceful semes, but I kind of have the feeling that most yaoi fan girls like that. bigrazz Then it's just a bonus that the uke is a violent nut head.

I actually ended up dropping Challengers (the prequel), because I disliked Tomoe, and therefore I hesitated with reading this, since I missed out on some of the plot from the prequel, but if you're in the same situation fear not - just read this. It's easy to follow the plot anyways.

An enjoyable yaoi read, not perfect, but entertaining if you don't take it too seriously. Just enjoy the ride.

This manga.. This manga is my absouloute favorite Yaoi manga of all time. It's one of those Mangas where my heart throbs everytime something depressing happens. I love that feeling. I like the fact that Hinako-Sensei makes the story like a rollar coaster. Ya never know what's going to happen. This manga is definetly reccomended by 1000.

MY FAVE MANGA

I for one adore this series, the art is amazing, the characters are fascinating, it's just so interesting! Many people criticize it for the fact it seems 'repetitive' but if you pay attention close enough you will notice that they get closer mentally. It's hard to explain, but even though sempai may reject Morinaga outside, he may say something or do something that shows he feels closer to Morinaga (especially in vol 5 & 6). Also people don't like that Morinaga raped sempai but...well i completely disagree with rape and see no justification for the action of raping but thats how this series gets kick-started. If Morinaga hadn't have done that their relationship would have moved A LOT slower or wouldn't have really moved much at all. This series was made for the drama in the story, it is going to be very dramatic because the characters are very dramatic (sempai is my fave ~<3). All in all i think this is the best yaoi I've read and well personally its my favourite manga of all time. I think the slow progression is what makes this series so amazing since sempai isn't falling all over Morinaga, that makes it much more believable.

I have only recently started reading this series and fell head over heels for it. It reminded me of "the book" that started my gay romance frenzy. It was a "straight romance" book that had a bromance on the side that unfortunately for me never blossomed. I love the "I am only gay for you" relationship where love has no boundaries or sexual orientation.

I also don't normally go for the skinny types but this story was an exception:

the dominant male being the uke
lab research and scientists
forbidden love
gay only for you relationship
Some straight characters with a strong role in the story
It's soooo funny!!

I honestly can't get enough of this manga and hope it never ends and the next chapters can't come out soon enough...

An unforgettable yaoi comedy

Well, really agree with what you (majority) have written here, and God blesses us, the series finally is licensed in North America though we still need to wait for its availability in the market.

*For those who haven't read Challengers -- please buy them (4 volumns) and read. Challengers tells the beginning relationship between Morinaga and Tatsumi quite a lot.

Whenever I read Koisuru Boukun, I'm always curious about who, Takanaga Sensei, her editor, or someone they know, had the idea first to create such an unbelievable couple. Morinaga is indeed cute, and is mature and sensitive enough for Tatsumi, who on the other hand, is very inmature in expressing his true feelings. (Actually, it looks like he keeps denying his feelings towards Morinaga.) So far from what I have read, Takanaga Sensei is doing a great job in the subtle changes in this couple's relationship. I guess lots of readers probably are thinking: "Oh yeah! Souichi DO love Morinaga! So what will happen next? Is he going to tell him that he loves him, and when?" In fact, I don't think I can wait any longer to see the ending.
