Never have i read a manga have been more conflicted on whether or not i should recommend it.

Never have i read a manga have been more conflicted on whether or not i should recommend it.

https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=371863 Anime review Which adapts the first 18 volumes. I'm writing this review presuming that you have read anime review.

Boys over flowers is a reverse harem romance comedy series about this heroine who is really poor who attends this really super duper rich school. In this school there is 4 top dogs. Known as the F4. As well as the really poor FMC who has some of the worst parents ever. The story is about her appearance and how it changes not just the F4 but the people around her too.

The beginning part of the story sucks. Like hard. In my anime review i talk about how complete piece of shit the characters and this is still true. The first 15 volumes this series is trash. Though there are some light hearted moments and enjoyment to be had its just too little compared the absolute garbage the characters usually do in the series.

So imagine my surprise when this series just goes uphill and keeps going albeit with some bumps on the road. The series takes a massive turn as the MMC's mom shows up. This woman is easily the best character in the series. She pulls such massive plots to make sure that her son doesn't date the FMC but she has such a dominating presence that i just cannot wait for her show up. She easily carries the series and is responsible for many many femdom fetishes that is to come.

But its not just her the characters grow evidently but not like ridiculously. They mature and grow in a reasonable rate to the point that you would notice but the author wouldn't dump 1000 words of exposition to make sure you know that they have changed and this is one my favorite parts about this series. The character change in both of the main characters is astounding yet subtle. It is incredibly well done.

Its hard however for me to recommend this series however. The FMC actually starts making rape jokes... WHEN SHE WAS THE VICTIM. Maybe the comedy is too high for my brain to truly understand. Some of the other issues include the amnesia arc which seemed entirely pointless. Even the new character that was introduced was just.... weird. She practically served no purpose. Also how the amnesia arc is resolved is pretty damn stupid too.

2 more things I'd like to talk about is the fact that how important it is for a series to pick itself back up again rather than start strong but lose steam. Its harder to get hooked on this manga because of its weak start but the overall experience feels better. Another thing I want to add is the fact that an age of the series does not matter. Berserk, Hajime no ippo, Lone wolf and the cub. These are all series i hear are phenomenal yet I've never heard anyone use the term "you have to cater in the fact it was released in the 80's". When i reviewed Love Hina the whole catering in cuz its old is something i heard a lot. which is weird because when people say that its practically admitting the fact thats its a piece of shit if you read it now. So if you have reached this far in the review i would like to you know that I'm reviewing Boys over flowers not as if it was released in the 80's but rather im reviewing based on the quality of the manga now.

So back to the review would i recommend Boys over flowers? I don't know. Is it worth wading through 15 volumes of shit for 22 volumes of fun? 2/5ths of the manga sucks. But the question is, is 3/5ths of the manga good enough to forgive the 2/5ths.

I have no idea.

I did enjoy the manga. I did start liking the characters. The romance made more and more sense as the series progressed. The ending is a bit disappointing but nothing majorly upsetting. The series still has its downs but goddamn i could not stop reading this manga. I tried to put it down but i just wanted to know what happens. What keeps its going. I could not wait for what happens which is such a massive difference between the first 15 volumes.

TLDR: if you are willing to wade through garbage..... 15 volumes. Then your in for a solid albeit a bit of a broken series. 6/10

Fuck me.

This is by far one of my favorites. It starts off kind of slow, with some awkward moments like on the island when Tsukasa finds Makino with another member of the F4 and then when Tsukasa agrees to dating/being with the girl his mom set him up with to break away from Makino. After those, the story gets really interesting and do does the art for at the beginning the characters, especially Makino and Tsubasa, didn't look that well drawn but the art gets a lot better the more the story goes. And, this was the first manga imever that I cried after reading one part (when Makino almost leaves Tsubasa on the the bus but gets off the bus because she truly does love Tsubasa). It's just a great story I can read over and over again. I really suggest reading it!! smile

It's so amazing. ONE OF THE BEST MANGAS EVER.

Seriously, I've never wholeheartedly supported the main couple as much as I have for Tsukasa and Tsukushi. They are adorable together <3 and Tsukasa is such a perfect man. Don't let the length or art scare you away. Once you actually start reading it you'll be wishing for it to never end and the art improves radically throughout the 36 volumes. You don't notice as you're reading but if you compare art from the first volume to the last, it looks like a completely different mangaka!

The story is amazing; so romantic so touching. Tsukushi and Tsukasa are their own categories of main characters. Rui is adorable as well. Not to mention Sojiro <3

Ok, well, I have not finished this series, but i am getting close to the end. Really its a good series, and the artwork gets better as it continues and so does the character development and plot, even if it is slow as my dead grandma. (no offense). but as much as I am liking this series, I wish there weren't so many twists and turns and just get to the happy ending. really, all this stress will make me break out.
I reccommend it though to anyone who likes romance/drawn-out drama/rich boy, poor girl love story.

I first know Hana Yori Dango from its Taiwanese adaptation. It was good and entertaining, I watched it times and again. I never interested in reading the manga because I am never really into shoujo romance, until recently that I finally decided to give it a try. Surprisingly, Hana Yori Dango is among the very few of its kind that I can read for over a dozen of volumes. It was entertaining, its comedic aspect is probably the one that got me hooked and the romance does not make me cringe somehow. Now I understand why this manga has been adapted into screenplay in so many countries. Putting into account its publication year, this manga is a masterpiece for its genre.

I, however, would have given it a much higher rating if not for a few things that have been bugging me.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
First, I found it hard to tolerate the way the mangaka treated and pictured violence and attempted rapes in this manga. Doumyoji is a likeable character, but hitting your partner is never okay whatever the situation is. I found him slapping Makino a number of times, and the fact that they went without being further addressed is bugging me. They were treated so lightly I am concerned that some of those who read this might get the wrong idea that, it is okay for your partner to hit you, it is part of love. This is just so wrong. And the attempted rape scenes when Makino was being bullied... Man, they deserve punishment or something. It should have been a traumatic experience. But it went poofed just like that like it was nothing big.

Second, the prolonged drama. Sometimes I think it is just way too much and the manga is being dragged for too long. I understand that it is a popular manga, and most popular mangas published in the later 20th century are over 30 volumes... But well, for this, I am hoping for a more conclusive ending... And all those drama make the supposedly strong Makino into a typical clueless shoujo protagonist, oh well...

Anyway, I still find this manga entertaining, and is up for a second read when I have time.

What the heck is wrong with Makino? At first, she was really strong, very brave and she can speak out whatever she has on her mind which is exactly the fact why I love her in the first place! But as the storyline gets deeper, and I can see her "degrading" and getting more and more annoying, especially when she's acting like a weak character. Why can't she be honest with Tsukasa about her love for him? Just because she's afraid that Tsukasa's mother will do something to her friends, she tends to pull back? Where on earth is the strong Makino that shouted and called Tsukasa's mother names?! OMG. It was so...horrible. I do enjoy reading the storyline, no doubt! But the character development! That's the real problem!

Not to forget that she can just kiss with whomever she "trusts". How on earth can she trust someone so easily, and when she found out that they betrayed her, got mad but then, forgives again and gets fooled again?! Not logic. I'm seriously disappointed. Where did the strong Makino went? I have to say, I prefer Tsukasa way much more than Makino after seeing her becoming weaker and weaker. Yes, Tsukasa might be childish but at least he's better than Makino. At least he's honest. I feel sorry for him when Makino keeps stepping crushing his feelings like that. I have no comments for the other 3 F4 members. They have a very strong friendship bonding, especially Akira and Nishikado. Omg. This two have been trying to pull the group together when it began to break. They even tried to pull Tsukasa and Makino together and make sure that their relationship progresses. It's really nice to see that Tsukasa and Rui have friends like that, although they're playboys. Rui is...quite okay. He's not exactly the best character but he develops very well throughout the manga. I love the part where he splashes water and call the 3 girls who likes to bully Makino "murderers" when they tricked her to go out to the snow blizzard. He was friggin' awesome.

And I really don't want to complain about this since I'm downloading, but the scanlation was so poor from volume...I dunno 9 or 10. I was so disappointed to the group that scanned and translated those few volumes. It's like they did a half-ass job and the one thing that pissed me off the most is the empty bubbles!!! Why?! Why is it empty?! OMG. I wouldn't mind if they inserted a sentence that doesn't make sense than to leave it empty! I don't want to critic them to be honest! But I was so pissed! Why would they want to translate this work when they're not putting their best on to it?!

Holds up almost twenty years later...

For starting in 1993, it's pretty impressive that this manga still holds up today even in the early bits. Although there is certainly a difference in the quality and style of the artwork, the change happens very gradually and is not disruptive. In fact it's kind of cool to see her style evolve, especially if you've read her later series Cat Street before.

Actually, I would have to say that I love the first half of the series, maybe even first 2/3rds but the last part is sort of boring...

Spoiler (highlight to view)
There was a certain point, after Makino went to New York the first time, I was sort of...over the whole Romeo and Juliet-esque "we can not be together because of our families" thing. Not only did Domonji's mom suck hardcore style but Makino's family was idiotic as well. Actually, Makino's family was so annoying I started skipping over scenes of them.

I was also at that point secretly routing for Rui and was all sad face when Makino did take him up on his fabulous adorable Rui-ness. They were so natural with each other in a way that is probably go to always bug Domonji. Heh heh heh, Rui will probably milk that for all it's worth.

However, I do feel like a lot of the problems with the manga came from the long length and distribution over the years. It would be hard to keep up the same tone in the storyline that long! But even though it has faults, the manga remains one of the shojo greats! It may seem a bit cliched today but it does the cliches right and, well, probably was one of the mangas that inspired the cliches. Definitely worth a read for any Kamio Yukio fan but also for anyone who likes more "mature" shojo.

Well, I think I'm just repeating the others because I 100% agree with them that this manga is a masterpiece, My mother is a fan of the taiwanese drama and so was everyone in my class back when I was still in the 6th grade (6 years ago) but I wasn't into all the hype, I didn't like the Teli that much. Then my mum bought the manga (because she was so crazy about it) she only bought 2 volumes, I tried reading it and I got so attached. But I looked for it everywhere and could not find it, I was devastated and tried to distract myself with other mangas.
6 years later it was summer and I was bored (yes it is sad) so I read the whole manga online in 2 days, not sleeping at all at night. It was a great experience I tells ya, I love tsukasa! I think this manga is pretty unpredictable at times, so that's a great point. But at the same time it get's overrated like a little bit impossible/unrealistic things and cliches there, but still captivating enough to keep me reading on. TRUST ME, even if you have had watched the drama or whatever (Which I haven't) READ THIS ! GO ON !

* I'm so sad that it has ended now ;( I'll save the re-read in the future. Cheers x

Not my cuppa tea

I'm a softie, and I'll be the first to admit. I strongly dislike Hana Yori Dango's potrayal of people. Sending mobs against a girl and group bullying are called "they overdo it sometimes", etc etc. Sure, that's just the start of the series, but it started off by leaving a really bad taste in my mouth.

Then, there's the whole thing about gaining/losing status, jealousy, etc that drags out for ever. The male protoganist (although to me, he's an antagonist) appears to me as a child with a the clearance code to every nuclear missle in the world: cross him, and he'll nuke your ass, although getting nuked is probably more humane than what he's preparing to do.

But what I really disliked about the series was how, even with his horrible attitude, he is still potrayed as a protoganist, as the hero. Sure it's something new (a badass hero with a bad temper) (At the time it came out), but it certainly isn't my cuppa tea. As a matter of fact, the uniqueness wears out very fast, and I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth + another harem romance/drama. If I had to choose, I'd rather have a *good* taste in my mouth + another harem romace/drama.

But then again, that's just one guy's opinion. Give it a try (first few, mid-few and last-few volumes, since the direction of the series does change occasionally) and see if it'll suit your taste, before going marathon on it.
