Description
Fujishima Takara goes to high school and will start living in a dorm because he has lost all his family except for his father, who's always away for his work. Takara has to share a room with Hosaka Kiyomine. Living together isn't easy, and many rows ensue. Kiyomine is very introverted, while Takara is just the opposite. At first the two get on each other's nerves because of those differences. But things turn towards friendship and later on towards love.

Wouldn't it be nice if the manaka eventually wrote a final epilogue for this series of what happened to the characters after their college graduation and if they have a HEA in the future?

Worth it!

I will start off by saying, I really enjoy this manga! It's actually one of my all-time favorites, because it's got school life, slice-of-life, dorm mates, rivals to best friends to lovers(sort of?), and a fun supporting cast; if you like Hana Kimi (which is my absolute most-loved manga ever), this has a very similar feel in a lot of ways. It definitely has its problems, but for me personally it is overwhelmingly worth reading anyway, because it makes me happy and the good outweighs the bad.

All that being said, it's...old. The art style is dated, and there's a fair amount of sexist (and a few kind of racist-feeling) bits, i.e., every woman has incredible housework and cooking skills, unless she's a career woman with a more 'brash' personality. (Any time Ayako's job is brought up, they make a point to mention that it's weird that she's a detective and not just a traffic cop, and also that she's a woman and shouldn't have to work, and also also that she probably only has this job to keep Kiyomine out of trouble.) Also, this might be a cultural thing and not a dated thing, but bullying gets brought up a lot as well and most times the characters' response to the bullied kid is 'well, it's half your fault, did you even try to get along with them?'

As far as the plot goes, it is slice-of-life, so there isn't much of a plot; we're mostly just focusing on the characters and their lives. When we do have plot, there's a lot of threads that feel random (TWICE, we explore a side character with terrible family issues that Takara has involved himself in), or that are left dangling. Like, we compare Takara to his mom all the time and it's constantly brought up that she passed away when he was little...but no joke, we NEVER find out how she died. Presumably it wasn't sickness, since Takara's hospital trauma seems to stem solely from his grandmother's passing - and, despite all the terrible situations Takara finds himself or the people he loves in (fire, kidnapping, car accidents, etc.), he never brings up anything like 'ah, my mother died this way'. It's just weird because her being dead comes up over and over again, and yet this aspect of it is never addressed. Additionally, despite the story being character-driven (and while I love most of the characters), I don't know that any of them grow that much throughout the course of this story. Kiyomine and Takara's relationship gets better, Takara becomes more willing to be affectionate and depend on the people around him, and Kiyomine opens his world a bit more...but I don't know that anyone is in any way a new person by the end (except maybe Touya, but he had a rough start; and I guess some of the new first years introduced towards the end have some improvement when we leave them). If you're expecting someone to become a better/more improved version of themselves throughout, this probably isn't the manga for you. For example, does Kiyomine ever apologize for anything, ever? Spoiler: No. ...Okay once, but for something that was arguably not even his fault.

As herosusan123 said, this is borderline shounen-ai; I think that's partially because this manga is definitely a product of its older time, but we never see Takara and Kiyomine kiss (it's definitely heavily implied, but the panel always stops right before it happens and cuts away - and the kisses are also usually marketed as Kiyomine just messing around with Takara). They also, even up to the very very end of the manga, never define their relationship...AS a relationship, and even both think about getting girlfriends at one point or another. All that being said, I am a sucker for couples where they're each other's 'special exception', and this manga checks that box HARD. There's a line Takara has about how being with Kiyomine is 'easier than breathing', which hits me in the chest every time I read it, and another where Kiyomine calls Takara the other half of his soul (and that he makes him feel like he can be more emotional and open, like Takara). They are integral to each other, absolutely inseparable and better/happier together. Also, all the casual cuddles and general skinship brings me joy.

tl;dr: It's old, it's slice of life and mostly plotless, and the main relationship is arguably not romantic at all. But I love it, and I've read it in one sitting about three times through already. 🙂

good art, good story

this is a long, character driven story that has both (melo)dramatic moments and slice-of-life. the romance is very very subtle, with things being implied more than shown or said, (in the translated version anyways). i was a little dissapointed at with the ending, but this is still one of my overall favorite SI, despite the lack of anything like closure or solid confirmation. they're certainly closer than friends, but whether or not its more than that is left almost completely up to the reader.
a good, long series but a little frustrating for the readers wanting to see something concrete.

This was a long but good manga. I would recommend it if you have a lot of free time and are in the mood to read something light.

The relationships and the occurings during the manga are well written and you will find yourself liking all of the characters.
There are no hard tragedies (no dark ambience, although a few short sad things happen during the story) and the love acts/phisical interactions are not so harsh/ecchi (even though the hard connection and love between Takara and Kiyomine are clearly strong and beautiful).... But I mean, I just wished that maybe there would have been more kisses, jealousy scenes (or even sex hehehe) oh well, I'm a fujoushi >.<
I was only a bit disappointed that
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Takara accepted so easily when Kiyomine blamed Kou-san about the car accident with Ayako, even though Kou-san was the most injured. He was really an asshole and didn't even apologize do Takara about what he said! And even after Ayako went to Afrika to find Kou-san, the same thing happened and Kiyomine didn't even consider Takara's feelings!!!
Leaving this aside...
I simply love the art! It changes after some chapters, but I find both artstyles just amazing. Sometimes I just stopped reading and started to admire the beauty of the characters <3

<3 it's one of Abe-sensei's best works! I'm so glad that I managed to find the raws in a bookshop and I bought the complete set without hesitation. It leaves me with a bitter sweet feeling upon finishing it and I was jumping up and down happily ^____^;

Great character development, plot and drawing. What more could you ask for? XD

I can't stop reading this manga!
The drawings are so clear and well done that I get hypnotised just by looking at them. The story is really sweet and funny, although sometimes a bit sad, and it is really worth its rating.

love/hate relationship

honestly, I don't even know what to say. I started to read this manga when I was still in uni, but it wasn't fully translated then. So now we have it, I'm 26 and I finally finished this. There are things that I absolutely adore - heroes, relationships, the slice of life elements. This manga really made me relive the feeling of moving on to another life - from school to uni, and from uni on to other things. This is so bittersweet that there really are no words for this - you either know the feeling or you don't. For this particular reason I'm glad that I finished it being 26. But by god, why couldn't we get a less opened ending? I really wanted some more resolution to their lives! I can see that mangaka dealt with all the couples similarly, so I can't say that we got robbed only on the account of the main heroes, but MAN, do I want more! This is so frustrating! And still I love it. I'd like to have a rant and say that there were so many subplots, heroes that were really unnecessary, heroes that went nowhere, cases of characters behaving strangely, and this hanging, dragging shounen-ai tail... But I just can't. I can't badmouth this one, because I still love it. And I think that, if only in part, this manga is about this precisely. Loving something/one even though you want to kill them on a daily basis )))))))))))))))
So yeah. There's that. In the end, am I glad that I read this? Definitely. Can I recommend it? Of course. Just... be prepared to not always get what you want.

Komatta toki ni wa hoshi ni kike!

I don't know what to feel or what to say, i'm just frustrated that i wanted to cry, really bad. Yes it is certainly a good manga, a really good manga, it tackled deep about relationships, not just about love, but friendship, hatred, angst, regret, family. It's clearly a Shounen ai genre manga, the characters relationship started in an interesting manner that gradually becomes sweeter and deeper that you'll want more of it, but there is no clear explanation (i don't know how to put up a word about that clear "something") on what is really going on on them, or what is their feelings for each other. The author gives this excitement feeling when the characters have a sweet progress, that slowly builds up within you, at first i'm enjoying the fact that after 10-20 chapters they are still not confessing on each other, but that excitement on me turns into being impatient, then became a doubt and at the end a frustration. Idk if the author deliver their feelings as a love for each other as friends? Brothers? Or lovers? But it is clear that they are so precious to each other, but that adds to the frustration that i am feeling because it is just vague to me, i can't grasp the situation. Well their intimacy w/ each other are not the one you can call of "just friends". The other characters relationship are settled(i think?) but still gives off that feeling of uncertainty, though i don't know what happened to half of the others because they just kinda dissapeared from the scenes. The slice of life is great, i bet the author is so perceptive and have lots of deep experiences. The comedy is well done, but i don't see justice on how the author ended the manga, i hope that when takara came back, all of his friends are there to welcome him, though when kiyomine embraced him with a super sad longing face i just kind of accepted it, because it's touching. Well i don't really like the ending but i really love this manga, i learned a lot from it. I just want to believe that the author makes takara and kiyomine love each other very much not as friends, room mates or brothers but Lovers. I hope that even if this manga is from a long time ago, the author will write a series with complete details about what happened to all of this characters after even if its only a 5-10 chapters. I just can't get enough. I REALLY DON'T LIKE THE ENDING! I want the ending to be ended with them sharing a passionate kiss! Or words like "i love you very much!!" *pant. (I totally lose myself, forgive me) btw i really love takara's face OMG so adorable and fierce

Great manga ~

The first time I read this manga, I really liked it. It was cute and lovable. And the protagonist, despite his appearance, is actually pretty strong -- which is good, I'm not the type to go for type of protagonists who can't do anything by themselves. I finished the current chapters, then I go back and read it a second time. The third time, the flaws showed. I don't get why Abe-sensei must make everyone to like him, like, Takara meets a new character, the character dislike him, Takara shows how much of a caring person he is and the character grow fond of him. That's what happened most of the time, which is something that annoyed me. Other than that, it's a great manga and I highly recommend it nonetheless.
