Can't help but to love it. Others have stated but it does start off rough (all characters, plot, and art) but it's also an easy and engaging read that gets a whole lot better the further it goes. Everything gets better development (and in terms of characters, not just the main couple, but even the side characters get their development and story told) and it completes itself well. I love the resolution the FMC comes to when she finally establishes her relationship and how much she both develops but never loses the core of herself (even when it looked like it was going to be too much, she still managed to find her strength again and in a way that felt realistic and inspiring).
There are a lot of what would be shoujo clichés today though, so any new reader should be prepared for those (but it's an old story that probably codified some of these clichés in the first place, so keep that in mind).
I do want to add, and others have pointed this out as well, that a lot of the negative issues with the story are probably bc of how dated the views of these content are. The worst of the violence is resolved a little too casually, especially by today's standards and can be uncomfortable to read.
I'd touch on the absurdity of it, but tbh, after reading up on school violence and power imbalances/abuse in SK, I'm not sure if some of this wasn't inspired by real life events. I remember reading and thinking, 'where are the teachers?' or 'this is too much.' But then I saw the clips of teachers beating up students or hear from Koreans about how often they don't see teachers get involved in student conflict out of fear of losing their jobs or worse bc of rich students and their rich parents and it makes me wonder.

One thing I really enjoy about longer manga like this one is that there is a chance to develop side characters, and this manga really shines in that aspect. The few arcs dedicated to the character development, especially to Nishikado and Yuki, were especially satisfying. That said, the character development for Domyouji was excruciatingly underwhelming, and Makino seemed to have gone in a backwards direction. I would have liked to have seen more organic/drastic character growth for the mains instead of constantly stunting that growth with the same fight/drama routine that consistently derailed the plot.
There were various problematic elements highlighted by other reviews, including the abuse directed towards women and downplaying/excusing of assault. This especially bothered me since
I may be scoring lower than others considering I was rooting for a different ending, but in my eyes

Domyouji was one of the main offenders, and yet despite all the violence and mistreatment directed towards Makino he was always forgiven, making it a classic example of what a toxic and abusive relationship looks like

Rui was such a clear choice compared to Domyouji. It almost seemed like the author knew this as well since they kept depicting their relationship in such stark contrast, like an oasis to the drama filled abusive roller coaster Makino endured. Rui, along with many of the other potential love interests, were all opportunities for Makino to be in a healthy relationship
. It's such a damn shame considering if things had turned out differently, I feel like this manga could have been so much more empowering and showcased some amazing themes that just fell so flat with the ending it was given.Unsurprisingly, Not My Cup of Tea

A friend recommended this series to me and I managed to get through 5 chapters before calling it quits. I couldn't find a single, likable character nor do I intend to discover that these snot nosed brats really do have kind souls. No rating as this wasn't my type of series to start with.
Pretty good :)

at first I have no interest in reading as it seems so... complicated, and the story is pretty well-known, like, everybody know how it goes, because it has been made into many versions of dramas. But even though it's like that, I couldn't stop reading in the end. The chapters make me wanna know what happens next. Sure the story isn't very 'direct'. Tsukasa and Tsukushi, I feel like hitting both their heads sometimes. But in the end I like this story nice one! classic!

I already watched the anime, the japanese dorama: Hana Yori Dango, Hana Yori Dango 2, Hana Yori Dango Final (movie), and the korean dorama Boys Over Flowers, at last I've finished within a week the manga, it didn't leave the same feeling as the anime, but the manga got so much power that I couldn't stop myself from reading the next chapter. That's the power masterpiece mangas got, they fully capture your soul.

Behold! the strong female lead that I have bean searching for. Shes smart (but realistic), fun, hard working, devoted to her family and she sticks up for herself and her friends (and still isn't perfect). Tsukushi is one of my all time favorite characters from any story. She is very inspiring. The other characters are cool too, and they're all generally realistic people that you could meet (except for having god like amounts of money)
This series manages to be funny and dramatic in a well balanced way. Most of the characters have a TON of personality.
The only draw back of the series is perhaps its length. Its expensive to buy all those volumes, and I felt that the story went in circles a few times.

i must have been insane to have passed over this manga for the past 10 years or so. just goes to show, never judge a good manga by its art, which by the way, started improving tremendously from chapters 100 and above.
and now after picking it up, I JUST CAN'T STOP. Kamio Youko is really a genius, to have picked up all the deep and sensitive nuances of life. You can really tell how much she loves her characters, each of them lovingly crafted and created with life breathed into them. The main character Tsukushi is one of the best i've ever seen, and Domyouji, the male lead, makes my heart thump everytime he appears. What's especially amazing is how I fell in love with Domyouji despite that seriously whacked hairstyle of his, proof yet again, of the author's genius. (the bf is gonna be soooo jealous XD)
I don't think words would be ever enough to describe the pure adrenalin rush that is HYD, a true legend in the Shoujo manga world. I read all 180 chapters in a go, and still going strong. (fyi, I usually get put off by the 15th or so volume of most mangas)
