Got bored

As others have said, there is very little character development. I read up to chapter 47, got bored, and quit. It also gets very, very repetitive in the middle with Tsukimi expressing the same fears, and the brothers each expressing their own special brand of self centeredness and entitlement. At first I was excited to see these characters grow, and the situation seems like one that would develop maturity in a person, but the fact that they could stay the same in such a situation does not say good things about any of these characters. Basically I got squicked out by them after awhile.

That said, the art is nice enough to look at and the storyline was engaging for the first couple of volumes. I liked the realistic, slow way that the development of the fashion line was portrayed. Nobody came in and waved a magic wand and there was no transformative moment after which everything was a fairytale success ride, instead the characters worked hard and learned and progressively overcame real challenges. I also liked the unique interests of the characters and how their various viewpoints were portrayed.

However, by the 47th chapter I realized that the only endings I could reasonably anticipate would cast a pall back over the series so there was no point enduring the saggy middle any longer.

I might add a fly to the ointment here.. This manga is entertaining and catching, but there are some points I don't enjoy in long/ongoing manga series.
First, it's about people who lead a easy life: no job and enough money (from their working parents, I suppose) to enjoy their costly hobbies. I can't see Kuranosuke as a good attractive person, i just see him as a student with a rich, pedigree and very tolerant father, and thanks to that he can live freely and self-confidently, and out of interest play the Good King with some poor ugly girls. It's too easy for him, not very touching. And I can't believe in very childish naivety of Tsukimi. It's sick. She actually has been living alone in a big city with some strange otaku girls and she STILL is petrified by mere hug or kiss or even look of a man. And it's nonsense that she went all mad about Shuu seeing her in a tank top with no bra under it v_v (I remember Tsukushi from Hana Yori Dango who was seen by the boy, she had crush on, while sitting on a toilet with her pants down <- THAT was embarrassing ^-^!) . So, I can't relate myself to main characters.
Second, Kuranosuke, falling for Tsukimi just because she looks cute from time to time - it seems a rather superficial feeling to me. What does he know about her feelings, ideas, world-view? In fact, i don't know it either o_O. And all her thoughts revolve around jellyfish, her mom and boys. And here I must say, there is not much character development.
I was calmly enjoying it till vol.3, but 10 volumes.. ^^; (and it's still ongoing) I'm not sure I'd like to waste my time on it. Not my cup of tea, I suppose...

It IS original but...

So the story, the heroine, the people, everything is pretty original and cool. This manga is probably one of the most unique ones I've ever seen in the shoujo section. But despite all these great ideas and characters, all the cute drawings and jellyfish, this manga seems to lack an interesting plot. Yes, it IS funny and the plot IS original, but the original doesn't necessarily make it entertaining it seems.

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this manga in the beginning (despite my disappointment for the mangakas strange taste for 'bishies'). But as the story progressed I began to forget the purpose of this story and the humour was no longer enough to cover up for ever-dragging story.

I don't know...maybe it's just my taste, but this story was somewhat...not thrilling.

This manga is unique and always fun to read. The characters in it are very original and entertaining, especially Mayaya. If you're looking for something to read that's feel good and cute without being schmaltzy, I hope you give this a try.

A great read

For some reason I avoided this manga like the plague when it first became recognized. I honestly can't tell you why; perhaps the cover art put me off. Eventually it seems that I picked it up, and instantly fell in love. The story has your typical shy, unsociable girl who has unrecognized talent and beauty. Like many manga, it has the "make-up transformation" cliche at times, but it's a little more unique than that.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
All of the unsociable, misfit girls get makeovers, not just the main character!

Each character is so quirky and fun to love, you can't get enough of them. That's what really makes this manga so great. Also, I love the art style. It's rare to find such distinctive style now-a-days, and it's great to see.

This manga is truly one of the funniest you will ever read. In my searches, it came up a million times, but I passed over it looking at the picture (not the most flattering) and the description. I didn't know what a jellyfish otaku was then, so I had no idea it was literally an extreme love for jellyfish. But I finally started reading it, and I'm so happy I did. From the very first chapter, it had me in stitches. And not only is the story good, but you really come to love the characters. Every one of them has a very unique personality that you won't find anywhere else. The romance is nice too, it's not over the top, but the subtle hints will make your nose bleed. And the anime does a really great job of sticking to the storyline, so be sure to check it out.

A decent story if it isn't taken seriously

Art style and the light hearted comedy and romance is interesting if the story isn't taken seriously.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The manga shouldn't have a romance tag because there isn't any. At the end the protagonist decides she isn't ready for any serious relationships because she wants to continue living her life and grow as a person with her friends whom she loves and cares about.

Kuranosuke is a very selfish character. He basically forced a group of random people to carry out his dream of being in the fashion world by making them partake in making dresses. The reason why he was so determine to make it into the fashion world was to reach out to his mom! He wanted international fame or be famous enough that his mom might see him. All he thought about was his mom mom mom. Never gave a damn about the women in that house. None of those women wanted to be a fashion designer or a clothing designer. The two women that actually has experience making clothes only have an interest in making clothes for their dolls. They all complained about all the workload but no one listened and they continued to be forced.

The women kept going because they did it to save their house. They were going to lose their home. Kuranosuke convinced them to make dresses so they can sell and make money to buy the Amamizukan house.

A top tier Josei manga with little to none romance development

For people who are curious if one should give this a read. People don't hesitate. This is a gem of a story about fashion designers. I don't know how accurate it shown but I most certainly am sure that one will love the way they portrayed it. The characters are not likable from the get go but you'll slowly will be able empathize with them. I just want to add one more thing to all this. The male lead is eccentric, quirky, cunning and very funny. I can assure you that his character is vastly different from the ikemen males you usually get to see in shoujo and josei mangas. He is absolutely the very best character and the reason why this story is good. Make no mistake though. The female lead might not have much of a personality but she has a great character development in the 80 chapters. Do not read this for romance. Read this as a sol/drama and witness one of the best josei story!

Pretty shit. Anime was less awful cuz it wasted my time less

. This 17 volume series was too long with alot of downhill moments. The series is essentially a fashion, Ugly Duckling and a love triangle story. All 3 which i feel were poorly executed. The series just took too long to deal with anything in the series. This is a 17 volumes series yet it felt 11 volumes too long. Its way too slow to the point that the last chapter... didn;t feel rushed hillariously enough. Despite wrapping up like a buncha plotlines. I enjoyed the comedy when it involved the Vixen and the driver. However the comedy elements involving the main and supporting cast just didn't work. It was golden in the anime but failed in the manga. I liked the idea of becoming fashion designers but it was executed pretty poorly. there was some good moments but there were far too inbetween. Also the MMC's reason for crossdressing takes way too long to be explained. For majority of the series you supposed to believe he's just a horrible person that takes advantage of his father while simultaneously trying to make him mad. I don't think the father is a great person either. But for me the worst person in this series was the MMC he was selfish more majority of the series. The romance was also good fun in the earlier parts but at the end as expected it fell apart. I think the ugly ducking story as well was done poorly. Besides the FMC none of them have legitimate developments. Except maybe the tall chick

I didn't think this was a bad series but it was incredibly mundane. It had few good moments but was barely passable overall. The funniest moments in the manga were the bonus omakes about the author's personal life. so thats not something you should be the case in your comedy manga.

5/10 Rare case the anime being superior
