Why is this sad? Some people complain about the ending being ambiguous, but its pretty clear what happened and what's going to happen. Obviously don't read this if you're not into very "heavy" atmosphere stories...

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Noboru is about to go on the rescue mission to save Mikako and since he will be in space he won't really age either. The expected outcome is that the rescue is a success and they reach the mothership thing, so it'll be a 25 year old Noboru and a 16-17 year old Mikako. That is if the Aliens don't come back and kill off the mothership, but from what the ending text reads, the intended "after" story would be the one I just described.

I watched the OVA and it is amongst my favourites but it felt kind of incomplete... So I was told to read manga and the manga gives more closure and has more character development. It is very very beautiful, both, - the art and the story.

If you liked the OVA please read it if you haven't watched the OVA, read it as well bigrazz It is one of my favourite stories ever and a must read.

This manga is what I'm looking for in manga. I didn't cry either, but if I read it again I would. The manga really does develope the characters' feelings. The art is sweet and flowing perfectly displaying the manga. The manga is tragic in it's own way especially with the star-crossed lovers. Such strong emotions perfectly shown. Almost flawless in that area. The character designs aren't extemely detailed - but they don't need to be. The art clean and simple makes the manga even better. The only thing I don't like about this is the fact that it was too short and could have ran at least a volume more. If it was longer we really would be emotionally attached to these characters. Still, such a beautiful manga. Breathtaking and though-provocative. Definitely Recommended.

the artwork is so beautiful, I like the story, their mutual feeling is so wonderful. I've seen the OVA but still I like this better overall.

Hoshi no Koe manga - superior to the anime version

Saw the anime OVA and found the story heart-wrenching. But there was, in my opinion, something missing.
It's hard to point out exactly what, but if I had to, I guess guess I'd say it suffers from being only OVA-long. Had it been of movielength I think the story would have gotten through to the viewer even better.

However, the manga version manages to remedy this slight fault and delivers the tale in full emotional blast. Damn, I almost cried several times when reading the volume.
The story is more elaborate and has also changed somewhat in certain aspects.

The art of the manga is really nice and really overshadows the anime characters kinda strange exterior.
All-in-all, this manga would be for anyone looking for a bitter-sweet lovestory or something move you and your emotions. For the ones that watched the anime OVA, this one is a must.

It's been a few years since I've read (and even more since I've watched) this.
The manga is also written by Shinkai.

It basically expands on the story a lot by showing time between missions and showing the guy's life on Earth as a secondary protagonist.

I definitely recommend fans of the short movie to read the manga.

asdfghj. I saw this manga suggested on a website, yet I ignore this one for a while,
da fudge.
It's really worth reading for..it's dramatic and I am satisfied with the outcome.
The fact that they both live on the same atmosphere is enough to make their hearts and hopes contained and connected.

i remember hearing a whole bunch of good stuff about the movie, but when i finally got to watch it, i was left a bit underwhelmed. i didn't feel the characters were constructed that great in the movie and the drama felt forced and laid on too thickly.

i wanted to give this manga a try, though, since i love sahara mizu's works. i ended up enjoying this much more than the movie since we get to see more of the characters and have more insight into their personalities and motivations. art is also gorgeous, as usual.

It almost feels like Sumomo's art was made for this story, it fits so well. This is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read, and I do read a lot, though generally my taste in books and manga have no overlap, this was a rare exception. Both the OVA and the manga are good, though I prefer it in this medium.
