no regrets

I've read literally hundreds of different mangas, but this is and always will be my favorite. the Gokusen anime is my favorite anime, too, simply because it came from this manga. the dorama, not so much, but it still holds a special place in my heart.

the art isn't great in the beginning, but it gets better and you'll be so drawn in by the story that you won't care anyway. and is it funny! i've re-read Gokusen more times than i can count but i still LOL each time.

I have two great dreams regarding this manga: 1) that the manga-ka writes us a sequel showing the development of the ShinKumi relationship (yes I'm a shipper) and 2) that this series will be licensed and released officially in English so that i no longer need to hurt my eyes staring at scanlations on my computer screen during my periodic gokusen binges. oh, and so that i can help support the mangaka.

so yeah, read it. you will not regret it. unless you're one of those 15 people who gave it a 1. then you obviously need help.

I saw the anime long before reading the manga, I wish they would (or have) completed the anime, it followed the manga closely but was different enough for you to enjoy. But i'd recommend this to anyone.

It got a little boring around end volume 4, but picks up again and stays real entertaining. It's not perfect, but the humor and atmosphere is pretty good! Too bad the school didn't go co-ed, and the conclusion was a little underwhelming.

My Favorite Comfort Manga

I can't recommend this series highly enough. It's short, funny, and still manages to capture your heart. The romance is subtle, which I appreciate, and doesn't really happen until after
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Shin graduates and you only really see this fleshed out in the extras.

There are so many things going on but the heart of the manga stays the same - Yankumi's love of her students and how she uses her strength to push them forward. She really is their ally and watches out for them. Because the story chapters are shorter, there's never a sense of being bogged down with a long, boring arc. It moves fast.

As an adult reading it, I can see a lot of really good things I never noticed before...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
How Yankumi really doesn't view Shin as a romantic partner at all, which I appreciate since she is his teacher, but how she does rely on him and highly esteem him. How Shinohara doesn't really appreciate Yankumi's absolute wildness but would rather ask her to tone it down while Shin just follows hard after. The conversation between Shin and Shinohara is probably my favorite -- he really gets involved because he chooses to, he wants to pursue law because of them and to help them, and not because he feels forced to repay a debt.

Like I said, I've read this manga so many times and it never fails to comfort and warm my heart. It's a comedy, so there are gag things, but the heart of the story is what makes you come back over and over again.

Favourite Manga

I'm actually surprised that I haven't commented on this manga before now. I'm on my way to reading it for the third time, and I'm so excited! When I read it the first few times, I laughed so hard I cried. Like it's often mentioned, there isn't much romance, but Shin's such a trooper! I, too would have liked there to be more romance, but it's a great manga as it is.
Don't let the art dissuade you from reading Gokusen! I didn't like it to begin with, either, but it's really a great medium for the story, and I can't imagine it being drawn any other way. I'm quite fond of it now!
About the drama: I was really disappointed. The manga had more romance than the drama did! Romance wasn't a thing in the drama. I couldn't even finish watching it!
Anyway, read this or your life will be lacklustre! bigrazz

No words to express how awesome this is. Hilarious, action-packed and you won`t even put it down. I`ve been reading it for the past 8 hours and it`s 4 in the morning and I just finished! I wish there was more, a bit more. The ending was a bit abrupt but the story will never get you bored. Wish there was more Kumiko/Shin romance :">

Good, but not as good as I was expecting

As the title says.
It was a good read, it really was. But for it's story, it's way too long. There's too much pointless filler, needless specials (what the heck was up with the SawadaxFuji ones??), and incredibly unnecessary story arcs. In its defense, though, it was very funny (I actually laughed out loud at times, very rare in my case), and the characters all had a lot of spunk. The romance felt a little shoehorned in, but it did give a little more oomph to it. Also, I liked

that the students were the ones who were more often being rescued.

The art... well, it does improve a little bit from the beginning. It's hard to get used to that aspect, but I've certainly seen worse.
It's got its rough patches, but it's still a great read.

I think I tried picking this up three times, and kept on putting it down again after the first chapter because of the art. But honestly... read this. When I finally started reading it for real, I couldn't put it down. It's so funny at times, and Yankumi is really cool. By the tenth chapter, I didn't even care about the art anymore. Honestly, if you read this, you won't regret it; it's funny, sweet, interesting, and has really good moments in it. Go read this now!

Gokusen is one of those manga series' that you start off being not so sure about, but end up finishing before you even have a chance to blink. There are some cultural references sprinkled throughout the series, but not enough to distract the reader. The teacher, Yamaguchi Kumiko (a.k.a. "Yankumi") is a funny, honest, highly respectable-type character that I often find myself looking for in most comedy-type series. I really like the fact that although she's tough, she's not invincible (which is awesome), and she really gives a crap about the people that most others are all too eager to toss aside.

I was able to get my hands on the Japanese quite a few years back and, like many others, was not too impressed with the art work. But the mangaka does improve the character design quite a bit towards the middle of the series. The funny thing about that is...by the time she did, I was so into the story that I hadn't even noticed. LOL.

It's definitely worth reading for those who aren't too reliant on romance (there are a few VEEEEERY subtle encounters throughout the series, and the specials allude to more romance) and just want to read something that's good and makes you laugh, then I highly recommend this series.

Not a fan of the dramas and the movie though...although Nakama Yukie does bear a striking resemblence to Yankumi. It's almost kinda scary...

Also, it it just me, or does anyone else believe that
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Wada Kyousuke is Kumiko's dad? I know what he told her himself, but...

Anyway, yeah. Great series here.
