Amazing manga.
At first, the story kind of put me off. It starts off with the overdone 'popular bad body lady killer falls in love with shy quiet girl' type of storyline. As you read on, you realize there is so much more to this story. With regards to Kira and Rei's love, they show that love conquers all. The conflicts they go through are not your usual high school shoujo manga problems, but serious issues that are related to their past traumas. This manga showed the dark side of each character, side of them that they don't reveal to the public. It's very intriguing and really makes you think about human nature. Characters like Masao Kirishima and Sei had so much depth. When you figure out why they're the way they are, you can't help but just think. Some of the moments where a character reveals a bit of that 'secret' side to them made me stop breathing for a while (Among other moments in the story). I won't go into too much detail, but this has definitely become a favourite of mine. I hope to be able to purchase the volumes when I can find them (And when I have the money).

Art (10%): 7
Not one of the best but it is unique and okay to look at.

Story (40%): 10
The plot may not seem that unique (bad boy falls for quiet shy girl) but it is so much deeper than that. The story touches upon really deep issues: rape, bullying, suicide but does it in a way that makes the story flow. The love between Kira and Rei remains pure and it is amazing how they overcome all of the obstacles realistically.

Character (40%): 10
The characters appear shallow in the beginning (or at least I thought so) but then you realize that both of the main characters are deeper than they seem. They both faced tragic events in their past and that makes up their present character. Every character eventually develops and every character becomes likable.

Enjoyment (10%): 9
I am probably being bias since this was my first manga but it is a great read. It has a lot of drama (like a soap opera) but it doesn't feel corny. Although it has a lot of drama, the love between Kira and Rei remains pure. There were some parts where Kira's weak personality annoyed me but it was good overall

Total Score: 9.6

As my first manga this is very special to me. This manga has strong character development, along with the plot. What people need to understand about Mars before reading it is that it's not filled with happy sunshine moments, it gets pretty dark as the story moves along. Very serious, unspoken physiological issues are dealt with in the story. Despite the shift into a very dark, serious mode, Mars still manages deal with these problems without it feeling dragged out or boring. Each chapter contributed to the story. Really amazing manga/ story, don't miss out on this one.

I have to take my hat off to Soryo Fuyumi for such a wonderful story.
It really touched me with its romantic feel and awed me with its psychological twists which will really get the mind running. I loved how the mangaka thought of the plot's chronological order very well, unlike other cliché shoujo/romance titles where the plot is very predictable and/or sometimes very spontaneous, wherein one element pops out of nowhere, which is very irritating for readers like me.

The manga itself was drawn beautifully and the characters, for me, was as if brought to life because I can truly sense Kira's artistry as I felt that her paintings/sketches were actually done by her... a fictional character, not by Soryo-san.

Overall, I highly recommend this manga. =3

This story is so real, the characters are all well developed. And like, dragonness57 said, this story really does give you chills. All of the scenes made my heart pound so much. You can really feel what the characters are feeling and that is what makes a story great. Its scary and beautiful at the same time. I know, it sounds weird but you'll understand once you start reading this great series.

I already watched live action (Taiwanese Drama) long time ago, and at that time I donít know that this drama is adaptation from manga. I never thought that.

When I know this manga, I pass it, since I already watch the live action; Iím scared that I will disappoint with this manga. Since I like the live action very much. But I was wrong, I love this series. I love this much much than the live action.
The art is good, I love that. I love how Souryo Fuyumi draw Rei, and after I finish this manga, I feel more happy about my life smile biggrin

Life Goes On

I liked how the story focused on surviving despite all the different setbacks. Also how the main couple had separate lives before and after their relationship which continued on into their future. There was notable improvement from Rika starting out and Rei who slowly realized how self-destructive his prior lifestyle had been. However, I feel like the ending lacked the impact since it had been resolved easily compared to everything else going on at the time.

Art is dated but still works with the story. I'm a bit bothered by how she draws girl's eyes since they look awkward with the realistic art style. I didn't mind it that much compared to other retro titles.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Later on the drama levels started getting insane esp with the mental illnesses and antagonist but luckily it resolved itself. Also Rei's father showing up and basically paying for everything made it somewhat less interesting. Then again I do agree they are really young to be getting married.

The standard of shoujo.

If you think of shoujo, this is it. I saw the Taiwanese live-action a long time ago before I read this manga, so nothing surprised me.

Great artwork. The chemistry between the two main characters was great. The plot, although was dark and at some point had a message about the importance of dreams and passion, was centrally focused on the romance that I thought made the story not much else besides that. Although mostly everything was cliche, well this manga is dated (just a little less than two decades since it came out!) so I'll forgive some things. What I'll also give a thumbs up for about this manga is the fact that the cheesy parts didn't make me cringe; basically it wasn't gag-worthy.

Anyway, this manga would have usually gotten a high rating from me except while reading I realized I didn't much care about the main couple. It's not that it's an old story I'm revisiting and I wasn't so hyped to be getting into it again. (Even while watching the live-action when I was still so in love with the actor that played Rei,) I couldn't emotionally invest in the two main characters like I usually do when I'm reading/watching anything. The only character I felt anything for was Rei's father and probably Kira's mother. I think part of my disappointment with the manga was how selfish Rei and Kira was. They sacrificed a lot for each other, but yet they existed in their own world where no one else mattered. Everything was all about them literally; what they needed, what they wanted, what they cared about. Hey, it's a love story about fated lovers, I know! Maybe I just don't care for this type of thing. And maybe it's just me, but I felt that Rei and Kira never really expressed their gratefulness for all the support that everyone gave them to a depth that satisfied me. Again, to the end it was all about them. You see, I might forgive other shoujos for this, but for MARS where the mangaka tried to go for something deep my rating criteria thus is more harsh.

The way it stars out in the very beginning you see it as being a typical shoujo, but then things start getting serious. The characters both have dark, dark pasts that haunt them. But that's also why they're so drawn to each other. They're both messed up in their own ways, yet, they manage to change each other for the better. They heal each other as the story progresses. This is what love is. Being able to change someone so that they are able to look past their darkness in themselves. Screw everyone else.
