This one is SO MUCH better than FY and I really liked FY, except for whiny Miaka. Takiko is a better developed character in her likability and maturity. The only think I don't like about this series is that it is so hard to wait for the next volume to come. I'm tearing my hair out waiting. And it makes me secretly hope that the fate awaiting Takiko from FY is some sort play in universes and it doesn't actually happen. *wishful thinking* I highly recommend this series on all levels.
even better than FY

Takiko's story is more engaging than Miaka's - who I felt was too harem-ish.
And at least she's smarter than Miaka.
Anyways, this story is getting better and better. I love it! If only releases were more frequent *sigh*. It's a MUST read, the art and the storyline is great! what more can you want? I hope this story doesn't end... ='(
>.< more plz!!

I simply love this manga! it has humour, drama, action, adventure, fantasy and a little bit of romance here and there - the ingredients needed to make a best-seller. the characters are more developed and more mature (thank goodness) as compared to its original counterpart in many, many ways. for one, the female protagonist in FYGK, Takiko, has a whole lot more depth when you compare her to the one in FY, Miaka. true, she does scream for her knight in shining armour now and then, but she doesn't do it as often. why? because she can actually defend herself! armed with a traditional Japanese weapon called a Naginata, Takiko can be seen showing off some of her moves against her enemies, which is awesome!
other than this very-impressive leading lady, the art in the manga is so much more developed (although, I find a few of the fighting scenes a little tacky). the storyline is a whole lot more political and intense. plus, it has a rather sober setting; after all, many (if not all) of the characters have tragic backgrounds. the reason why I didn't give it a higher rating was because the series hasn't been completed so I'll have to hold back on this one.
all in all, FYGK is definitely a must-read for shojo comic-lovers. my only qualm is that there will definitely be a tragic ending to this amazing tale, which makes me feel extremely gutted.

this version was better than its sequel. its short and to the point. plus, there isnt too much romance. mostly comedy and such. there are sad parts, but not as many as in its sequel. so i'd have to say, this is the one that you should read. the sequel is fine, but this one is better. plus, the artwork is alot better as well.

If you've seen my comment on the "sequel" to this manga, you know of my detest of the whole Universe of the Four Gods concept. Before you get your pitchforks however, I must say it is this series that changed EVERYTHING for me! I now love the whole storyline idea, and I can finally say that Yuu Watase is an awesome mangaka! I mean, she's excellent regardless, [Alice 19th, Ayashi no Ceres, and Imadoki Nowadays are out of this world], but Fushigi Yuugi negated all the awesomeness of those works. However, by creating a totally new and improved story from an already used storyline that flopped immensely all thanks to one certain whiny girl, she has done a complete 180 in my eyes. I can finally look forward whole-heartedly to any future works from her. Anyways, FYGK is wicked awesome, the only reason why I'm docking .5 from its score is because you kinda NEED to sit through the horrific tale of its counterpart before you can consume it. DON'T WORRY, YOU CAN DO IT! [trust me, if I could, you can]. If you really can't stand a certain priestess's antics, I guess you can get the Wikipedia mini-version of it and begin Genbu Kaidan.

For anyone who read Fushigi Yuugi and was annoyed by Miaka, Takiko is a much stronger main character. The romance doesn't seem to factor in as heavily as of yet, but the politics and complexity of the story seems to be more developed than the original Fushigi Yuugi. I wonder how it will end -- considering that in Fushigi Yuugi the "ending" of the Genbu arc is told...

Personally, I think this is one of Watase-sensei's better works. Takiko's cool and Limdo is SO hot!(He looks kinda like Night from Zettai Kareshi in FY =^_^=) The storyline is interesting and the art has even improved a LOT. It's not say that Miaka and Tamahome aren't a cute couple, just Takiko and Limdo make a better one.
[spoiler alert]
The one bad thing is that you know, from reading the first FY, that Takiko will get killed by her dad and all. That puts a damper on things 'cause that means FYGB will have a sad ending, and you can't have a happy ending without the heroine.... *sighers* poor Limdo-kun and Takiko-chan T_T

I agree with many here... fushigi Yuugi was good, but Genbu Kaiden is wwwwwwwaaaaaaayyyyyy better, nice to have an occasional shoujo where the main character isn't a complete airhead.

It's good! I've read vol. 1 + 2. I'm wondering why I can't download anything here though.
