One of my favorite manga series of any genre.

This series defies a lot of the elements common to shoujo--it's not some painfully drawn out 30-volume monstrosity where the couple are barely even dating by the end; the heroine isn't a delicate, wimpy weakling who every single male within a thousand mile radius falls inexplicably and madly in love with; and the male lead, for all that Haruna may love him, isn't some sex god or paragon of virtue (nor is he a complete jerk who the heroine stays with for inexplicable reasons, either). It's pretty realistic for a manga, hysterically funny (and really well-drawn), and manages to make the genre of shoujo completely, genuinely enjoyable in ways few other shoujo can. I'm frankly shocked people would actually dislike this series; clearly they have not read enough other works in this genre to know just how head and shoulders Koukou Debut (and pretty much all of Kahawara Kazune's works) stands above them.

If you're tired of the same-old, same-old shoujo staples of love triangles and taking 300 chapters to get the couple together and ludicrously pretty and perfect people having shallow relationship wangst and wilting flower Mary Sue heroines, Koukou Debut is for you for pretty much ignoring aaaallllll of that and telling quite an original story and in a very funny fashion.

And Yoh is just awesome biggrin Plus, a new volume just came out, and the series is getting a movie and a cell phone drama spin-off, so if you get into the series now, there's lots of new media coming your way~

i actually liked this manga, and i can't say that about a lot of shoujo i have read, i didn't have high hopes for this one after reading the first few chapters where apparently all that's important for attracting a boyfriend are one's looks and the way one dresses. i also hated how haruna dumped her athletic pursuits and became totally focussed on getting a boyfriend. i almost put it down then.

but regardless, overall it was rather sweet and funny. haruna is a little too dense, but as a shoujo heroine she doesn't bother me a lot -- she is not mean, not manipulative, not weak. she is refreshingly honest, her enthusiasm is infectious, she cares a lot about her friends and works very hard to do nice things for them, she also works to improve herself, and when she realises her mistakes she makes things right without prevarication. there isn't a huge amount of overall growth on her part, because there isn't actually anything particularly bad about her character per se; she is a good person. her character develops by struggling through the smaller decisions to do the right thing at difficult times. the more pronounced and obvious character growth here is yoh's, who also needed it much more, because he was basically broken at the start. and to my relief, even though haruna is too focussed on yoh for my taste, she actually does get around to think about a career for herself, and she also makes the right decision in supporting yoh in his choice, even though that makes their relationship a lot tougher. these two people are genuinely good for each other.

i always like the guys whom others find boring -- i thought yoh was a good character, and he didn't bore me for a second. admittedly he becomes a little less fun when his own feelings prevent him from continuing to read haruna like a book, but he's also honest (i will always prefer a blunt, honest person over a sweet one who tells polite untruths), and he is patient and kind to haruna. his own shyness and how his cool facade crumbles when it comes to haruna is endearing; i wouldn't like him half as much if he were truly cool and collected all the time. and i really like how he changes; it's subtle, but still very clear.

i would have liked to see more development in some of the secondary characters -- i want to know more about mami and asaoka; i wasn't particularly interested in asami about whom we get more. i know it makes sense because she is yoh's sister and therefore plays a larger role, but i didn't like her.

the art is nothing great; there's way too many closeups on haruna and her widely surprised eyes, nor are there many interesting camera angles, so i am marking the manga down for that.

is it predictable? umm... almost all shoujo (and shounen for that matter) is predictable in certain ways -- we know the girl gets the boy, right? we know there will be crises that test the strength of the relationship; either before or after it becomes established. i didn't find it annoyingly predictable; there were enough small bits that i didn't foresee; like the events around fumi at the start. and yoh/haruna got together much sooner than i had anticipated. is it too long? maybe a little; i could have done without the more dramatic and more typically shoujo crises towards the end (*wipes glasses girl from memory*). but it didn't drag on for too much.

don't expect some major life lessons out of this. but it's more than a mere fluff piece, with likeable characters and reasonably realistic depiction of the tumultuous feelings one goes through as a teenager, while being mildly comedic as well.

This manga is okay to say the least. It's not that this manga is incredibly horrid, but it's not the greatest manga in the world either. The story is very typical and predictable. The characters are okay. The female lead is the typical high school girl that is looking for love but can't seem to attract anyone, and the male lead is an absolute BORE. He has no personality whatsoever and the way he is drawn in the manga makes him look like he is constantly deprived of sleep. I can't figure out why on earth any girl would fall for such a dull guy. He's so dull that not even his supposed "good looks" can make up for his lack of character. If you really have nothing else to read, then this manga can be somewhat entertaining. Although I must say that there is nothing remotely unique about this manga.

For quite some time, i kept on running on this manga but I never actually tried to read it, well, i did read it but only the first 5 pages and dropped it. Yesterday, I bumped into this manga again and i've thought of reading it and try out some few chapters. I dont know what had happened but it got me hooked. Like seriously, i wanted to finish it with one sitting.

Lots of stories are going around in this manga. Every character had their spot; some parts are boring some parts aren't that bad. I just find it boring because of too much school life stories, like its already dragging too long but nonetheless, this manga was something to read.

Haruna is just as stupid as ever but Yoh, i must say, he's the type of guy that every girl is dreaming about. I love it how he made Haruna feel secured in their relationship altho there were issues to settle.Their love for each other grew in the long run and i think its something to be happy about.

I've liked this manga. I dont care about Haruna's stupidity because, that's what makes Yoh to say his true feelings and vice versa, for Haruna she's trying to see her life/love in a more mature perspective way, i believe thats what the mangaka is trying to imply. Not just the heroine's stupidity and all.

This was a brilliant manga . it was extremely funny and the protagonist Haruna , reminded me of myself . It's interesting about how a strange couple forms through 'that' way . I was amused and was never able to stop reading .
Because this is such a good manga , i'm afraid that the live action won't be that good due to the actor playing Yoh's personality and acting skills . i don't think they quite match Yoh .
but i loved this !

I didn't really like this manga, the main reason was the main female character, there's a limit to how annoying and clueless you can be. That got on my nerves alot. Yoh wasn't that much better but at least it was bearable. The art is alright though and I 'spose the plot was okay too.

At first when i read the description of this manga i didnt quite like it as i dont like things like " DONT FALL IN LOVE WITH ME" stuff. BUT i undersestimated tthis and learned a valuable lesson, which i have been taught several times (and sincelry hope that i dont do the same mistake again.) DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!!!!!!! This was honestly one of the best mangas ever made! The art was cute!!!! The PLot was intense and just awesome. Love the character development andd characters! And the romance was WOW! HIGHLY RECCOMENEDED!!!!

i've read some of the comments and don't really know why ppl hated this manga. yeah, i have to admit that the start of the manga wasn't with a good reason: a girl tries to get BF. but as the flow, the story is really okay.

the lead male, Yoh, is a good guy, he's actually stiff and easily gets shy but he's very caring and a bit childish too, which makes him very cute and adorable. and for the girl, she's... yeah, very embrassing and a bit too loud, but she's strong (for real), doesn't cry much as the story goes on and sometimes she does make me surprised.

i practically am not a shoujo fan, after a long time of reading shoujo mangas and finding it's very boring with lots in the same/easy-to-guess motif, i almost gave up on shoujo and have decided to stick with yaoi/shounen-ai only : ))))).

but this read is refeshing, and although i was wondering at first that: if these two be a couple at the very start of the story, what would happen then to make this one 13 volumes long? and yeah, i'm very satisfied with the plot, because the author didn't waste her paper at all. this couple keeps getting cuter and cuter, and Yoh does get changed because of his GF.

the cracked jokes are very funny too, you can't help smiling : ). i think sensei made a good work, and it's a very worth of your time.

I didn't like it

I like romances. I like it when two characters slowly fall for each other.

I hated Koukou Debut, and it has everything to do with the characters. You have your 'strong' and 'clueless' female lead. Then there's the 'cool' and 'aloof' but 'with a heart of gold' male lead. Female lead wants a boyfriend. Female lead sees hot male lead and begs him to teach her how to get a boyfriend.

Clueless girl + hot guy + teaching something = instant love.

That's basically the formula of this series. It's generic, nothing special, and the characters are so one dimensional and they make me want to rip the hair out of my head. I didn't like any of them, and if no character is likable, then the entire series is bad. Especially the female lead, she could get on my nerves so many times. Stop trying to act out your stereotype so much (the clueless and strong part) and break away from it! Become a real character damnit! But alas, Koukou Debut is a generic shoujo romance with stupid characters.

It's probably why most people love it.

Avoid Koukou Debut if you seem to find yourself disliking many shoujos, and actually want to read about likable characters with an honest romance.
