A True Masterpiece

I loved this manga. The last chapters left me breathless for more..Adrenaline pumping.. This is a work of art..Beautifully psychological - everything has a motive..And the great thing is, we never know the whole picture, until the very end... When the mangaka taunts us with little pieces of the character's past..Enticing us to read further and never be able to drop this story. The mangaka is truly the master of suspense.

It's above 9. I liked it better than 20th Century (maybe also because I had to wait long for 20th' new volumes), artwork is better than the adorable-awesome Mr. Keaton, though it will be beaten by Pluto. I remember reading the whole Monster volume years ago (nah, the hard books not the scanlation, that would be hard on my eyes) in one go, I simply couldn't put them down. The characters were 'alive', lots of suspense. In short it's highly recommended, unless you're really in the mood for light, happy stuff.

Personally, I'm not that sure why people are so crazy about this manga. I mean, it has an interesting premise...but I feel that the mangaka tried too hard to make it "mysterious" and "deep". The whole story rambles on too long, twists seem to be thrown in willy nilly just to make things more confusing, and many of the supposedly smart characters make stupid / weird decision after decision (a personal pet peeve of mine). The art style didn't really appeal to me at all, as well. I'd give it a 5 / 10

Best manga you'll ever read!

When I hear or read people who say that Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, or Vampire Knight are the best manga, I just laugh. I laugh because they have not read Monster.
I have both read the manga and watched the word-for-word anime adaptation, and I can tell you that I enjoyed every moment of it.

Morals or Duty?

An intriguing plot that started from what one man's thought to be right yet caused a series of unwanted events.
One's past can definitely determine one's future as well.
Characters, though vast, are treated with ample detail that makes each one stand out in their own proper respect.

The art work is also unique from the styles we often correspond to other mangas we might have read for it also gives courtesy to the overall theme.

There's more but, you'll just have to read it for yourself to find those out.

I've read Monster so many times that I've practically memorized every chapter. This is truly a stunning masterpiece -- there's never a dull moment, never a time when you think you could even consider looking away. I actually think of this as a story of "redemption" -- not religious redemption, but moral and spiritual redemption nonetheless. Even the apparent "villain" is a victim in his own right, and Tenma's inner purity is what helps him redeem not only himself, but the murderer he hunts.

Awesome, philosophical, inspiring and deep. If you have to take one manga with you to a desert island, this should be it.

Though I've not read other works by Naoki Urasawa, just reading this one lets you see the greatness of his works. This story kicks major ass, it has all the elements of a great story, and it just pulls you into this story so much and it's not hard to understand either. its just...Perfect period.
I think it would be a perfect movie if people know how to do it (though i've heard only bad things about how New Line is gonna screw this one up).
I just love the art, its so...hmm realistic?....heh but yeah this is definitely one of my all time favorite stories. I may in the future go and dwelve into other Urasawa works when i get the time but I think he's truly a master of writing.

This is a very complicated manga. A lot of reading and drawing. Very detailed. If you read 20th century boys, you'll like this one too. Some people may not like it because it is a very complex manga. Not just some one word manga but a whole web of story.

Excellent manga...just excellent. I've now read the manga and watched the entire series. And as somenoe else said, I wish I could forget it all so I could experience it all over again. The pure fear captured in this series, and the dark look into fascism and nazis...just unbelieveable. Also the contrast is used perfectly, placing horrific situations into small, quiet, happy and otherwise innocent settings. This manga is a 10 in every way, and the anime is a MUST WATCH for those who even read the manga. It changes mediums but it's done so well as far as sound and visuals go...its one of the best EVER...You just hate to see something this good come to an end...which is why I'm looking for the followup manga "Another Monster".

This manga really deserves my full points because the story is so great(even the ending is really nice) and the art is clear and the landscapes contain lots of details.

The characters are very deep and really interesting, especially Johan ^^. Detective Lunge really irritated me first but when he took that vacation to prague and found that book i actually started to like him. Theres just two characters and almost every characters that there was, I loved them, even Roberto.

Now when i think back at the manga i feel so nostalgic and i really would just want to forget everything about monster so that i could read it again.

Only 20th century boys can fight with this manga for the title of being my favorite.
